1Après ces choses, l'on vint dire à Joseph: Voici, ton père est malade. Et il prit avec lui ses deux fils, Manassé et Éphraïm.2On avertit Jacob, et on lui dit: Voici ton fils Joseph qui vient vers toi. Et Israël rassembla ses forces, et s'assit sur son lit.3Jacob dit à Joseph: Le Dieu tout puissant m'est apparu à Luz, dans le pays de Canaan, et il m'a béni.4Il m'a dit: Je te rendrai fécond, je te multiplierai, et je ferai de toi une multitude de peuples; je donnerai ce pays à ta postérité après toi, pour qu'elle le possède à toujours.5Maintenant, les deux fils qui te sont nés au pays d'Égypte, avant mon arrivée vers toi en Égypte, seront à moi; Éphraïm et Manassé seront à moi, comme Ruben et Siméon.6Mais les enfants que tu as engendrés après eux seront à toi; ils seront appelés du nom de leurs frères dans leur héritage.7A mon retour de Paddan, Rachel mourut en route auprès de moi, dans le pays de Canaan, à quelque distance d'Éphrata; et c'est là que je l'ai enterrée, sur le chemin d'Éphrata, qui est Bethléhem.8Israël regarda les fils de Joseph, et dit: Qui sont ceux-ci?9Joseph répondit à son père: Ce sont mes fils, que Dieu m'a donnés ici. Israël dit: Fais-les, je te prie, approcher de moi, pour que je les bénisse.10Les yeux d'Israël étaient appesantis par la vieillesse; il ne pouvait plus voir. Joseph les fit approcher de lui; et Israël leur donna un baiser, et les embrassa.11Israël dit à Joseph: Je ne pensais pas revoir ton visage, et voici que Dieu me fait voir même ta postérité.12Joseph les retira des genoux de son père, et il se prosterna en terre devant lui.13Puis Joseph les prit tous deux, Éphraïm de sa main droite à la gauche d'Israël, et Manassé de sa main gauche à la droite d'Israël, et il les fit approcher de lui.14Israël étendit sa main droite et la posa sur la tête d'Éphraïm qui était le plus jeune, et il posa sa main gauche sur la tête de Manassé: ce fut avec intention qu'il posa ses mains ainsi, car Manassé était le premier-né.15Il bénit Joseph, et dit: Que le Dieu en présence duquel ont marché mes pères, Abraham et Isaac, que le Dieu qui m'a conduit depuis que j'existe jusqu'à ce jour,16que l'ange qui m'a délivré de tout mal, bénisse ces enfants! Qu'ils soient appelés de mon nom et du nom de mes pères, Abraham et Isaac, et qu'ils multiplient en abondance au milieu du pays!17Joseph vit avec déplaisir que son père posait sa main droite sur la tête d'Éphraïm; il saisit la main de son père, pour la détourner de dessus la tête d'Éphraïm, et la diriger sur celle de Manassé.18Et Joseph dit à son père: Pas ainsi, mon père, car celui-ci est le premier-né; pose ta main droite sur sa tête.19Son père refusa, et dit: Je le sais, mon fils, je le sais; lui aussi deviendra un peuple, lui aussi sera grand; mais son frère cadet sera plus grand que lui, et sa postérité deviendra une multitude de nations.20Il les bénit ce jour-là, et dit: C'est par toi qu'Israël bénira, en disant: Que Dieu te traite comme Éphraïm et comme Manassé! Et il mit Éphraïm avant Manassé.21Israël dit à Joseph: Voici, je vais mourir! Mais Dieu sera avec vous, et il vous fera retourner dans le pays de vos pères.22Je te donne, de plus qu'à tes frères, une part que j'ai prise de la main des Amoréens avec mon épée et avec mon arc.
1Kurze Zeit später erhielt Josef die Nachricht: »Es steht nicht gut um deinen Vater.« Sofort eilte er mit seinen Söhnen Ephraim und Manasse zu ihm.2Als Jakob hörte, dass Josef gekommen war, setzte er sich mit letzter Kraft im Bett auf.3Er sagte zu Josef: »Der allmächtige Gott ist mir bei Lus im Land Kanaan erschienen.4Er hat mich gesegnet und mir versprochen: ›Ich werde dir so viele Nachkommen schenken, dass von dir eine ganze Schar von Völkern abstammen wird. Ihnen gebe ich dieses Land, sie sollen es für immer besitzen.‹5Josef, ich möchte Ephraim und Manasse als meine Söhne annehmen!«, fuhr Jakob fort. »Sie wurden in Ägypten geboren, bevor ich hierherkam, und werden nun Ruben und Simeon gleichgestellt.6Die Söhne aber, die du nach ihnen bekommen hast, gelten als deine eigenen. Sie sollen kein Erbe bekommen, sondern zu Ephraim und Manasse gezählt werden.7Dies tue ich, weil ich deine Mutter Rahel immer besonders geliebt habe. Als wir aus Mesopotamien zurückkamen, starb sie in Kanaan, nicht weit von Efrata, dem heutigen Bethlehem. Dort begrub ich sie.«8Jakob blickte Ephraim und Manasse an. »Wer sind sie?«, fragte er.9»Das sind die beiden Söhne, die Gott mir in Ägypten geschenkt hat«, antwortete Josef. »Bring sie zu mir, ich will sie segnen!«, bat Jakob.10Jakobs Augen waren im Alter schwach geworden, er konnte kaum noch sehen. Darum brachte Josef die beiden nah an ihn heran. Jakob umarmte und küsste sie.11Dann wandte er sich wieder an Josef und sagte: »Ich hätte nicht geglaubt, dich jemals wiederzusehen. Jetzt lässt Gott mich sogar noch deine Kinder erleben!«12Josef nahm Ephraim und Manasse weg von Jakobs Knien und verbeugte sich tief vor seinem Vater.13Dann nahm er die beiden an die Hand und stellte Ephraim an Jakobs linke, Manasse an seine rechte Seite.14Aber Jakob kreuzte seine Hände und legte seine rechte Hand auf Ephraims Kopf, obwohl er der Jüngere war; seine linke legte er auf Manasses Kopf, obwohl er der Ältere war.15Er segnete Josef und seine Söhne und sagte: »Schon meine Väter Abraham und Isaak gingen ihren Weg mit Gott, dem Herrn. Und auch für mich hat er mein Leben lang wie ein guter Hirte gesorgt.16Sein Engel hat mich aus allen Gefahren gerettet. Dieser Gott möge auch Ephraim und Manasse reich beschenken! Sie sollen weitertragen, was er mit Abraham, Isaak und mir begonnen hat![1] Ihre Nachkommen sollen zahlreich werden und das Land bevölkern!«17Josef gefiel es nicht, dass Jakob seine rechte Hand auf Ephraims Kopf gelegt hatte. Er nahm sie, um sie auf Manasse zu legen.18»Er ist der Erstgeborene!«, sagte er. »Leg deine rechte Hand auf ihn!«19Aber sein Vater ging nicht darauf ein. »Ich weiß, mein Sohn, ich weiß!«, erwiderte er. »Auch von Manasse wird ein großes Volk abstammen, aber Ephraim steht eine noch größere Zukunft bevor. Seine Nachkommen werden einmal unzählige Völker bilden!«20Schließlich segnete Jakob die beiden noch einmal ganz persönlich: »Euer Name soll sprichwörtlich sein, wenn man sich in Israel Gutes wünscht. Dann wird man sagen: ›Gott erweise dir Gutes wie Ephraim und Manasse!‹« Auf diese Weise gab er Ephraim den Vorrang vor seinem älteren Bruder Manasse.21Zu Josef sagte er: »Ich muss bald sterben. Aber Gott wird euch helfen und euch nach Kanaan zurückbringen, in das Land eurer Vorfahren.22Du sollst deinen Brüdern etwas voraushaben: Ich verspreche dir das Bergland, das ich den Amoritern im Kampf mit Schwert und Bogen abgenommen habe.«
1Some time later Joseph was told, ‘Your father is ill.’ So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.2When Jacob was told, ‘Your son Joseph has come to you,’ Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.3Jacob said to Joseph, ‘God Almighty[1] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me4and said to me, “I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.”5‘Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.6Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.7As I was returning from Paddan,[2] to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath’ (that is, Bethlehem).8When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, ‘Who are these?’9‘They are the sons God has given me here,’ Joseph said to his father. Then Israel said, ‘Bring them to me so that I may bless them.’10Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.11Israel said to Joseph, ‘I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too.’12Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.13And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right towards Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left towards Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him.14But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.15Then he blessed Joseph and said, ‘May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,16the Angel who has delivered me from all harm – may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly on the earth.’17When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.18Joseph said to him, ‘No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.’19But his father refused and said, ‘I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.’20He blessed them that day and said, ‘In your[3] name will Israel pronounce this blessing: “May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.” ’ So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.21Then Israel said to Joseph, ‘I am about to die, but God will be with you[4] and take you[5] back to the land of your[6] fathers.22And to you I give one more ridge of land[7] than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.’
