1La famine s'appesantissait sur le pays.2Quand ils eurent fini de manger le blé qu'ils avaient apporté d'Égypte, Jacob dit à ses fils: Retournez, achetez-nous un peu de vivres.3Juda lui répondit: Cet homme nous a fait cette déclaration formelle: Vous ne verrez pas ma face, à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.4Si donc tu veux envoyer notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons, et nous t'achèterons des vivres.5Mais si tu ne veux pas l'envoyer, nous ne descendrons point, car cet homme nous a dit: Vous ne verrez pas ma face, à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.6Israël dit alors: Pourquoi avez-vous mal agi à mon égard, en disant à cet homme que vous aviez encore un frère?7Ils répondirent: Cet homme nous a interrogés sur nous et sur notre famille, en disant: Votre père vit-il encore? avez-vous un frère? Et nous avons répondu à ces questions. Pouvions-nous savoir qu'il dirait: Faites descendre votre frère?8Juda dit à Israël, son père: Laisse venir l'enfant avec moi, afin que nous nous levions et que nous partions; et nous vivrons et ne mourrons pas, nous, toi, et nos enfants.9Je réponds de lui; tu le redemanderas de ma main. Si je ne le ramène pas auprès de toi et si je ne le remets pas devant ta face, je serai pour toujours coupable envers toi.10Car si nous n'eussions pas tardé, nous serions maintenant deux fois de retour.11Israël, leur père, leur dit: Puisqu'il le faut, faites ceci. Prenez dans vos sacs des meilleures productions du pays, pour en porter un présent à cet homme, un peu de baume et un peu de miel, des aromates, de la myrrhe, des pistaches et des amandes.12Prenez avec vous de l'argent au double, et remportez l'argent qu'on avait mis à l'entrée de vos sacs: peut-être était-ce une erreur.13Prenez votre frère, et levez-vous; retournez vers cet homme.14Que le Dieu tout puissant vous fasse trouver grâce devant cet homme, et qu'il laisse revenir avec vous votre autre frère et Benjamin! Et moi, si je dois être privé de mes enfants, que j'en sois privé!15Ils prirent le présent; ils prirent avec eux de l'argent au double, ainsi que Benjamin; ils se levèrent, descendirent en Égypte, et se présentèrent devant Joseph.16Dès que Joseph vit avec eux Benjamin, il dit à son intendant: Fais entrer ces gens dans la maison, tue et apprête; car ces gens mangeront avec moi à midi.17Cet homme fit ce que Joseph avait ordonné, et il conduisit ces gens dans la maison de Joseph.18Ils eurent peur lorsqu'ils furent conduits à la maison de Joseph, et ils dirent: C'est à cause de l'argent remis l'autre fois dans nos sacs qu'on nous emmène; c'est pour se jeter sur nous, se précipiter sur nous; c'est pour nous prendre comme esclaves, et s'emparer de nos ânes.19Ils s'approchèrent de l'intendant de la maison de Joseph, et lui adressèrent la parole, à l'entrée de la maison.20Ils dirent: Pardon! mon seigneur, nous sommes déjà descendus une fois pour acheter des vivres.21Puis, quand nous arrivâmes, au lieu où nous devions passer la nuit, nous avons ouvert nos sacs; et voici, l'argent de chacun était à l'entrée de son sac, notre argent selon son poids: nous le rapportons avec nous.22Nous avons aussi apporté d'autre argent, pour acheter des vivres. Nous ne savons pas qui avait mis notre argent dans nos sacs.23L'intendant répondit: Que la paix soit avec vous! Ne craignez rien. C'est votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père, qui vous a donné un trésor dans vos sacs. Votre argent m'est parvenu. Et il leur amena Siméon.24Cet homme les fit entrer dans la maison de Joseph; il leur donna de l'eau et ils se lavèrent les pieds; il donna aussi du fourrage à leurs ânes.25Ils préparèrent leur présent, en attendant que Joseph vienne à midi; car on les avait informés qu'ils mangeraient chez lui.26Quand Joseph fut arrivé à la maison, ils lui offrirent le présent qu'ils avaient apporté, et ils se prosternèrent en terre devant lui.27Il leur demanda comment ils se portaient; et il dit: Votre vieux père, dont vous avez parlé, est-il en bonne santé? vit-il encore?28Ils répondirent: Ton serviteur, notre père, est en bonne santé; il vit encore. Et ils s'inclinèrent et se prosternèrent.29Joseph leva les yeux; et, jetant un regard sur Benjamin, son frère, fils de sa mère, il dit: Est-ce là votre jeune frère, dont vous m'avez parlé? Et il ajouta: Dieu te fasse miséricorde, mon fils!30Ses entrailles étaient émues pour son frère, et il avait besoin de pleurer; il entra précipitamment dans une chambre, et il y pleura.31Après s'être lavé le visage, il en sortit; et, faisant des efforts pour se contenir, il dit: Servez à manger.32On servit Joseph à part, et ses frères à part; les Égyptiens qui mangeaient avec lui furent aussi servis à part, car les Égyptiens ne pouvaient pas manger avec les Hébreux, parce que c'est à leurs yeux une abomination.33Les frères de Joseph s'assirent en sa présence, le premier-né selon son droit d'aînesse, et le plus jeune selon son âge; et ils se regardaient les uns les autres avec étonnement.34Joseph leur fit porter des mets qui étaient devant lui, et Benjamin en eut cinq fois plus que les autres. Ils burent, et s'égayèrent avec lui.

Musstet ihr mir das antun?«, fragte Jakob.7»Der Mann hat sich genau nach unserer Familie erkundigt«, entgegneten sie. »Er wollte wissen, ob unser Vater noch lebt und ob wir noch einen Bruder haben. Konnten wir denn ahnen, dass er sagen würde: ›Bringt euren Bruder mit‹?«8Juda schlug vor: »Vertrau mir den Jungen an! Dann können wir losziehen, und keiner von uns muss verhungern.9Ich übernehme für ihn die volle Verantwortung. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht gesund zurückbringe, will ich mein Leben lang die Schuld dafür tragen!10Wir könnten schon zweimal wieder hier sein, wenn wir nicht so lange gezögert hätten!«11Da gab Jakob nach: »Wenn es sein muss, dann nehmt Benjamin mit. Bringt dem Mann etwas von den besten Erzeugnissen unseres Landes: kostbare Harze[1], außerdem Honig, Pistazien und Mandeln.12Nehmt doppelt so viel Geld mit, wie ihr braucht, und gebt den Betrag zurück, der oben in euren Säcken lag. Vielleicht war es ja nur ein Versehen.13Macht euch mit Benjamin auf den Weg.14Ich bete zum allmächtigen Gott, dass der ägyptische Herrscher Mitleid mit euch hat und Simeon und Benjamin freigibt. Und wenn ich meine Kinder verliere, dann muss es wohl so sein!«15Die Brüder nahmen die Geschenke und den doppelten Geldbetrag und zogen mit Benjamin nach Ägypten. Dort meldeten sie sich bei Josef.16Als Josef sah, dass Benjamin dabei war, sagte er zu seinem Hausverwalter: »Diese Männer werden heute Mittag mit mir essen. Führe sie in meinen Palast, schlachte ein Tier und bereite ein gutes Essen vor!«17Als der Verwalter die Brüder aufforderte, ihm in Josefs Palast zu folgen,18erschraken sie. »Sicher werden wir dort hineingeführt, weil das Geld in unseren Säcken war!«, dachten sie. »Jetzt werden sie uns überwältigen, die Esel wegnehmen und uns zu Sklaven machen!«19Am Eingang zum Palast sagten sie zu dem Verwalter:20»Bitte, Herr, wir waren schon einmal hier, um Getreide zu kaufen.21Auf dem Rückweg übernachteten wir in einer Herberge. Als wir dort unsere Getreidesäcke öffneten, lag in jedem das Geld, mit dem wir bezahlt hatten. Jetzt haben wir es wieder mitgebracht,22zusammen mit neuem Geld, um noch einmal Getreide zu kaufen. Wir können wirklich nicht sagen, wer das Geld in unsere Säcke getan hat!«23»Macht euch keine Sorgen, es ist alles in Ordnung«, beruhigte sie der Hausverwalter. »Euer Gott muss es heimlich hineingelegt haben, denn ich habe euer Geld bekommen!« Dann brachte er Simeon zu ihnen24und führte sie in den Palast. Dort gab er ihnen Wasser, damit sie sich die Füße waschen konnten, und fütterte ihre Esel.25Sie nutzten die Zeit, um ihre Geschenke für Josef zurechtzulegen; inzwischen hatten sie nämlich erfahren, dass sie mit ihm zu Mittag essen würden.26Als Josef eintrat, überreichten sie ihm die Geschenke und warfen sich vor ihm nieder.27Er erkundigte sich, wie es ihnen ging. »Was macht euer alter Vater, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt?«, fragte er. »Lebt er noch?«28»Ja, Herr«, antworteten sie, »und es geht ihm gut.« Dann warfen sie sich erneut vor ihm nieder.29Josef sah seinen Bruder Benjamin an, den Sohn seiner eigenen Mutter, und fragte: »Das ist also euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Gott segne dich!«30Der Anblick Benjamins bewegte ihn so sehr, dass ihm die Tränen kamen. Er lief hinaus und weinte in seinem Zimmer.31Dann wusch er sein Gesicht und ging wieder zurück. Mühsam beherrschte er sich und befahl seinen Dienern, das Essen aufzutragen.32Josef hatte einen eigenen Tisch, die Brüder aßen an einem anderen, und an einem dritten saßen die Ägypter, die mit dabei waren. Ihre Religion verbot es den Ägyptern nämlich, mit den Hebräern an einem Tisch zu essen, weil sie dadurch unrein würden.33Josefs Brüder saßen ihm gegenüber. Jeder hatte seinen Platz zugewiesen bekommen, und zwar genau nach der Reihenfolge ihres Alters. Sie blickten sich erstaunt an.34Als Zeichen der besonderen Ehre ließ Josef ihnen von den Gerichten auftragen, die auf seinem Tisch standen. Benjamin bekam einen sehr großen Anteil – fünfmal so viel wie seine Brüder! Dazu tranken sie Wein. Es war eine fröhliche Feier.
1Now the famine was still severe in the land.2So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, ‘Go back and buy us a little more food.’3But Judah said to him, ‘The man warned us solemnly, “You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.”4If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you.5But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, “You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.” ’6Israel asked, ‘Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?’7They replied, ‘The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. “Is your father still living?” he asked us. “Do you have another brother?” We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, “Bring your brother down here”?’8Then Judah said to Israel his father, ‘Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.9I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.10As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.’11Then their father Israel said to them, ‘If it must be, then do this: put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift – a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds.12Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.13Take your brother also and go back to the man at once.14And may God Almighty[1] grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.’15So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph.16When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, ‘Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare a meal; they are to eat with me at noon.’17The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph’s house.18Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, ‘We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.’19So they went up to Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house.20‘We beg your pardon, our lord,’ they said, ‘we came down here the first time to buy food.21But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver – the exact weight – in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us.22We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.’23‘It’s all right,’ he said. ‘Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.’ Then he brought Simeon out to them.24The steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet and provided fodder for their donkeys.25They prepared their gifts for Joseph’s arrival at noon, because they had heard that they were to eat there.26When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground.27He asked them how they were, and then he said, ‘How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?’28They replied, ‘Your servant our father is still alive and well.’ And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him.29As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, ‘Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?’ And he said, ‘God be gracious to you, my son.’30Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.31After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, ‘Serve the food.’32They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians.33The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment.34When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him.
