1En ce temps-là, Juda s'éloigna de ses frères, et se retira vers un homme d'Adullam, nommé Hira.2Là, Juda vit la fille d'un Cananéen, nommé Schua; il la prit pour femme, et alla vers elle.3Elle devint enceinte, et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Er.4Elle devint encore enceinte, et enfanta un fils, qu'elle appela Onan.5Elle enfanta de nouveau un fils, qu'elle appela Schéla; Juda était à Czib quand elle l'enfanta.6Juda prit pour Er, son premier-né, une femme nommée Tamar.7Er, premier-né de Juda, était méchant aux yeux de l'Éternel; et l'Éternel le fit mourir.8Alors Juda dit à Onan: Va vers la femme de ton frère, prends-la, comme beau-frère, et suscite une postérité à ton frère.9Onan, sachant que cette postérité ne serait pas à lui, se souillait à terre lorsqu'il allait vers la femme de son frère, afin de ne pas donner de postérité à son frère.10Ce qu'il faisait déplut à l'Éternel, qui le fit aussi mourir.11Alors Juda dit à Tamar, sa belle-fille: Demeure veuve dans la maison de ton père, jusqu'à ce que Schéla, mon fils, soit grand. Il parlait ainsi dans la crainte que Schéla ne mourût comme ses frères. Tamar s'en alla, et elle habita dans la maison de son père.12Les jours s'écoulèrent, et la fille de Schua, femme de Juda, mourut. Lorsque Juda fut consolé, il monta à Thimna, vers ceux qui tondaient ses brebis, lui et son ami Hira, l'Adullamite.13On en informa Tamar, et on lui dit: Voici ton beau-père qui monte à Thimna, pour tondre ses brebis.14Alors elle ôta ses habits de veuve, elle se couvrit d'un voile et s'enveloppa, et elle s'assit à l'entrée d'Énaïm, sur le chemin de Thimna; car elle voyait que Schéla était devenu grand, et qu'elle ne lui était point donnée pour femme.15Juda la vit, et la prit pour une prostituée, parce qu'elle avait couvert son visage.16Il l'aborda sur le chemin, et dit: Laisse-moi aller vers toi. Car il ne connut pas que c'était sa belle-fille. Elle dit: Que me donneras-tu pour venir vers moi?17Il répondit: Je t'enverrai un chevreau de mon troupeau. Elle dit: Me donneras-tu un gage, jusqu'à ce que tu l'envoies?18Il répondit: Quel gage te donnerai-je? Elle dit: Ton cachet, ton cordon, et le bâton que tu as à la main. Il les lui donna. Puis il alla vers elle; et elle devint enceinte de lui.19Elle se leva, et s'en alla; elle ôta son voile, et remit ses habits de veuve.20Juda envoya le chevreau par son ami l'Adullamite, pour retirer le gage des mains de la femme. Mais il ne la trouva point.21Il interrogea les gens du lieu, en disant: Où est cette prostituée qui se tenait à Énaïm, sur le chemin? Ils répondirent: Il n'y a point eu ici de prostituée.22Il retourna auprès de Juda, et dit: Je ne l'ai pas trouvée, et même les gens du lieu ont dit: Il n'y a point eu ici de prostituée.23Juda dit: Qu'elle garde ce qu'elle a! Ne nous exposons pas au mépris. Voici, j'ai envoyé ce chevreau, et tu ne l'as pas trouvée.24Environ trois mois après, on vint dire à Juda: Tamar, ta belle-fille, s'est prostituée, et même la voilà enceinte à la suite de sa prostitution. Et Juda dit: Faites-la sortir, et qu'elle soit brûlée.25Comme on l'amenait dehors, elle fit dire à son beau-père: C'est de l'homme à qui ces choses appartiennent que je suis enceinte; reconnais, je te prie, à qui sont ce cachet, ces cordons et ce bâton.26Juda les reconnut, et dit: Elle est moins coupable que moi, puisque je ne l'ai pas donnée à Schéla, mon fils. Et il ne la connut plus.27Quand elle fut au moment d'accoucher, voici, il y avait deux jumeaux dans son ventre.28Et pendant l'accouchement il y en eut un qui présenta la main; la sage-femme la prit, et y attacha un fil cramoisi, en disant: Celui-ci sort le premier.29Mais il retira la main, et son frère sortit. Alors la sage-femme dit: Quelle brèche tu as faite! Et elle lui donna le nom de Pérets.30Ensuite sortit son frère, qui avait à la main le fil cramoisi; et on lui donna le nom de Zérach.

Er zog hinunter zur Stadt Adullam und wohnte bei einem Mann namens Hira.2Dort lernte er die Tochter des Kanaaniters Schua kennen und heiratete sie.3-5Die beiden bekamen drei Söhne: Er, Onan und Schela. Bei Schelas Geburt war Juda gerade in Kesib.6Als der Älteste erwachsen war, verheiratete Juda ihn mit einem Mädchen namens Tamar.7Aber der HERR verabscheute, wie dieser sein Leben führte, darum ließ er ihn sterben.8Da ging Juda zu seinem Sohn Onan. »Du musst Tamar heiraten!«, forderte er ihn auf. »Das ist deine Pflicht als ihr Schwager, damit sie nicht kinderlos bleibt und die Familie deines Bruders nicht ausstirbt!«9Aber Onan wollte keinen Sohn zeugen, der nicht als sein eigener Nachkomme, sondern als der seines Bruders gelten würde. Darum ließ er jedes Mal, wenn er mit Tamar schlief, seinen Samen zu Boden fließen.10Aber das missfiel dem HERRN, und er ließ auch ihn sterben.11Da sagte Juda zu seiner Schwiegertochter: »Geh in dein Elternhaus zurück und bleib so lange Witwe, bis Schela erwachsen ist!« Weil er aber befürchtete, dass auch Schela sterben könnte wie seine Brüder, dachte er gar nicht daran, die beiden zu verheiraten. So ging Tamar in ihr Elternhaus zurück.12Einige Jahre später starb Judas Frau, die Tochter Schuas. Als die Trauerzeit vorüber war, ging Juda mit seinem Freund Hira nach Timna, wo gerade seine Schafe geschoren wurden.13Tamar erfuhr, dass ihr Schwiegervater auf dem Weg nach Timna war, um bei den Arbeiten zu helfen.14Daraufhin fasste sie einen Plan. Sie hatte nämlich inzwischen gemerkt, dass Schela, der längst erwachsen war, sie nicht heiraten sollte. Also zog sie ihre Witwenkleider aus, verhüllte sich mit einem Schleier und setzte sich an den Ortseingang von Enajim, das auf dem Weg nach Timna liegt.15Als Juda vorbeikam, hielt er sie für eine Prostituierte, weil ihr Gesicht verhüllt war.16Er ging zu ihr an den Wegrand. »Lass mich mit dir schlafen!«, forderte er sie auf – ohne zu wissen, wen er vor sich hatte. »Was bekomme ich dafür?«, wollte Tamar wissen.17»Ich werde dir einen Ziegenbock aus meiner Herde bringen«, versprach Juda. »Nur wenn du mir ein Pfand dalässt, bis du ihn bringst!«, bekam er zur Antwort.18»Gut, was soll ich dir geben?«, fragte er. »Deinen Siegelring mit der Schnur und deinen Stab!« Er gab ihr, was sie verlangte. Dann schlief er mit ihr, und sie wurde von ihm schwanger.19Danach ging Tamar nach Hause, legte ihren Schleier ab und zog die Witwenkleider wieder an.20Juda schickte seinen Freund Hira, um der Frau den Ziegenbock zu bringen und das Pfand zurückzuholen. Aber Hira konnte sie nicht finden.21Er fragte die Leute in Enajim: »Wo ist denn die Prostituierte[1], die neulich an der Straße saß?« »So eine Frau ist hier nicht gewesen!«, antworteten sie.22Da ging er zu Juda zurück und erzählte ihm alles.23»Dann soll sie das Pfand eben behalten!«, sagte Juda. »Wir setzen uns nur dem Gespött der Leute aus, wenn wir noch weiter nachforschen. Schließlich habe ich mein Bestes versucht!«24Etwa drei Monate später wurde Juda berichtet: »Deine Schwiegertochter Tamar ist schwanger! Diese Hure hat sich mit einem Mann eingelassen!« »Bringt sie sofort aus dem Dorf heraus!«, schrie Juda. »Sie soll verbrannt werden!«25Als man sie hinausschleppte, ließ sie Juda ausrichten: »Der Mann, dem dieser Siegelring, diese Schnur und dieser Stab gehören, ist der Vater meines Kindes. Erkennst du sie wieder?«26Juda erkannte seine Sachen sofort. »Tamar ist mir gegenüber im Recht«, gab er zu, »ich hätte sie meinem Sohn Schela zur Frau geben müssen!« Danach schlief Juda nie mehr mit ihr.27Kurz vor der Entbindung stellte sich heraus, dass Tamar Zwillinge bekam.28Bei der Geburt streckte ein Kind die Hand heraus. Die Hebamme hielt sie fest und band einen roten Faden um das Handgelenk. Daran sollte man erkennen, dass er als Erster geboren wurde.29Aber das Kind zog seine Hand wieder zurück, und der andere kam zuerst. »Du hast dir den Durchbruch wirklich erkämpft!«, rief die Hebamme. Darum wurde er Perez (»Durchbruch«) genannt.30Dann erst wurde sein Bruder mit dem roten Faden ums Handgelenk geboren. Er bekam den Namen Serach (»Morgenröte«).

He married her and made love to her;3she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.4She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.5She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.6Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.7But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.8Then Judah said to Onan, ‘Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfil your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.’9But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to avoid providing offspring for his brother.10What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.11Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, ‘Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.’ For he thought, ‘He may die too, just like his brothers.’ So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.12After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.13When Tamar was told, ‘Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,’14she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.15When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.16Not realising that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, ‘Come now, let me sleep with you.’ ‘And what will you give me to sleep with you?’ she asked.17‘I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,’ he said. ‘Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?’ she asked.18He said, ‘What pledge should I give you?’ ‘Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,’ she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.19After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.20Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.21He asked the men who lived there, ‘Where is the shrine-prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?’ ‘There hasn’t been any shrine-prostitute here,’ they said.22So he went back to Judah and said, ‘I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, “There hasn’t been any shrine-prostitute here.” ’23Then Judah said, ‘Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughing-stock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.’24About three months later Judah was told, ‘Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.’ Judah said, ‘Bring her out and let her be burned to death!’25As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. ‘I am pregnant by the man who owns these,’ she said. And she added, ‘See if you recognise whose seal and cord and staff these are.’26Judah recognised them and said, ‘She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.’ And he did not sleep with her again.27When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.28As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, ‘This one came out first.’29But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, ‘So this is how you have broken out!’ And he was named Perez.[1]30Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.[2]
