1L'Éternel se souvint de ce qu'il avait dit à Sara, et l'Éternel accomplit pour Sara ce qu'il avait promis.2Sara devint enceinte, et elle enfanta un fils à Abraham dans sa vieillesse, au temps fixé dont Dieu lui avait parlé.3Abraham donna le nom d'Isaac au fils qui lui était né, que Sara lui avait enfanté.4Abraham circoncit son fils Isaac, âgé de huit jours, comme Dieu le lui avait ordonné.5Abraham était âgé de cent ans, à la naissance d'Isaac, son fils.6Et Sara dit: Dieu m'a fait un sujet de rire; quiconque l'apprendra rira de moi.7Elle ajouta: Qui aurait dit à Abraham: Sara allaitera des enfants? Cependant je lui ai enfanté un fils dans sa vieillesse.8L'enfant grandit, et fut sevré; et Abraham fit un grand festin le jour où Isaac fut sevré.9Sara vit rire le fils qu'Agar, l'Égyptienne, avait enfanté à Abraham;10et elle dit à Abraham: Chasse cette servante et son fils, car le fils de cette servante n'héritera pas avec mon fils, avec Isaac.11Cette parole déplut fort aux yeux d'Abraham, à cause de son fils.12Mais Dieu dit à Abraham: Que cela ne déplaise pas à tes yeux, à cause de l'enfant et de ta servante. Accorde à Sara tout ce qu'elle te demandera; car c'est d'Isaac que sortira une postérité qui te sera propre.13Je ferai aussi une nation du fils de ta servante; car il est ta postérité.14Abraham se leva de bon matin; il prit du pain et une outre d'eau, qu'il donna à Agar et plaça sur son épaule; il lui remit aussi l'enfant, et la renvoya. Elle s'en alla, et s'égara dans le désert de Beer Schéba.15Quand l'eau de l'outre fut épuisée, elle laissa l'enfant sous un des arbrisseaux,16et alla s'asseoir vis-à-vis, à une portée d'arc; car elle disait: Que je ne voie pas mourir mon enfant! Elle s'assit donc vis-à-vis de lui, éleva la voix et pleura.17Dieu entendit la voix de l'enfant; et l'ange de Dieu appela du ciel Agar, et lui dit: Qu'as-tu, Agar? Ne crains point, car Dieu a entendu la voix de l'enfant dans le lieu où il est.18Lève-toi, prends l'enfant, saisis-le de ta main; car je ferai de lui une grande nation.19Et Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux, et elle vit un puits d'eau; elle alla remplir d'eau l'outre, et donna à boire à l'enfant.20Dieu fut avec l'enfant, qui grandit, habita dans le désert, et devint tireur d'arc.21Il habita dans le désert de Paran, et sa mère lui prit une femme du pays d'Égypte.22En ce temps-là, Abimélec, accompagné de Picol, chef de son armée, parla ainsi à Abraham: Dieu est avec toi dans tout ce que tu fais.23Jure-moi maintenant ici, par le nom de Dieu, que tu ne tromperas ni moi, ni mes enfants, ni mes petits-enfants, et que tu auras pour moi et le pays où tu séjournes la même bienveillance que j'ai eue pour toi.24Abraham dit: Je le jurerai.25Mais Abraham fit des reproches à Abimélec, au sujet d'un puits d'eau, dont s'étaient emparés de force les serviteurs d'Abimélec.26Abimélec répondit: J'ignore qui a fait cette chose-là; tu ne m'en as point informé, et moi, je ne l'apprends qu'aujourd'hui.27Et Abraham prit des brebis et des boeufs, qu'il donna à Abimélec; et ils firent tous deux alliance.28Abraham mit à part sept jeunes brebis.29Et Abimélec dit à Abraham: Qu'est-ce que ces sept jeunes brebis, que tu as mises à part?30Il répondit: Tu accepteras de ma main ces sept brebis, afin que cela me serve de témoignage que j'ai creusé ce puits.31C'est pourquoi on appelle ce lieu Beer Schéba; car c'est là qu'ils jurèrent l'un et l'autre.32Ils firent donc alliance à Beer Schéba. Après quoi, Abimélec se leva, avec Picol, chef de son armée; et ils retournèrent au pays des Philistins.33Abraham planta des tamariscs à Beer Schéba; et là il invoqua le nom de l'Éternel, Dieu de l'éternité.34Abraham séjourna longtemps dans le pays des Philistins.

Abraham wurde trotz seines hohen Alters noch einmal Vater, genau zu der Zeit, die Gott angegeben hatte.3So kam es, dass Abraham und Sara endlich einen gemeinsamen Sohn hatten. Abraham gab ihm den Namen Isaak (»Gelächter«).4Als Isaak acht Tage alt war, beschnitt Abraham ihn, so wie Gott es ihm aufgetragen hatte.5Er war zur Zeit der Geburt 100 Jahre alt.6Sara rief: »Gott lässt mich wieder lachen! Jeder, der das erfährt, wird mit mir lachen!7Denn wer hätte gedacht, dass ich in meinem Alter noch Mutter werde? Abraham hat Jahrzehnte darauf warten müssen, aber jetzt habe ich ihm einen Sohn geboren!«8Isaak wuchs heran, und als Sara aufhörte, ihn zu stillen, feierte Abraham mit seinen Leuten ein großes Fest.
Hagar und Ismael müssen gehen
9Sara bemerkte, wie Ismael – der Sohn von Abraham und der Ägypterin Hagar – sich über Isaak lustig machte.10Darüber wurde sie sehr zornig und bedrängte Abraham: »Jage diese Sklavin und ihren Sohn fort! Ich will nicht, dass mein Sohn Isaak mit ihm das Erbe teilen muss!«11Abraham war damit gar nicht einverstanden, denn schließlich war auch Ismael sein Sohn.12Aber Gott sagte zu ihm: »Sträube dich nicht dagegen, den Jungen und die Sklavin wegzuschicken! Tu alles, was Sara von dir fordert, denn nur die Nachkommen deines Sohnes Isaak werden das auserwählte Volk sein!13Aber auch Ismaels Nachkommen werde ich zu einem großen Volk machen, weil er von dir abstammt!«14Am nächsten Morgen stand Abraham früh auf. Er holte etwas zu essen und einen Ledersack voll Wasser, hängte Hagar alles über die Schulter und schickte sie mit ihrem Sohn weg. Hagar irrte ziellos in der Wüste von Beerscheba umher.15Bald ging ihnen das Wasser aus. Da ließ sie den Jungen unter einem Strauch zurück16und setzte sich etwa hundert Meter davon entfernt auf die Erde. »Ich kann nicht mit ansehen, wie mein Kind stirbt!«, weinte sie.17Aber Gott hörte den Jungen schreien. Der Engel Gottes rief Hagar vom Himmel herab zu: »Warum weinst du, Hagar? Hab keine Angst – Gott hat das Schreien des Jungen dort unter dem Strauch gehört!18Geh zu ihm und hilf ihm auf, denn aus seinen Nachkommen will ich ein großes Volk machen!«19Dann ließ Gott sie einen Brunnen sehen. Sie füllte ihren Ledersack mit Wasser und gab ihrem Sohn zu trinken.20-21Gott kümmerte sich auch weiterhin um Ismael. Er wuchs heran und wurde ein Bogenschütze. Er lebte in der Wüste Paran, und seine Mutter gab ihm eine Ägypterin zur Frau.
Abraham und Abimelech schließen einen Vertrag
22Um diese Zeit kam Abimelech mit seinem Heerführer Pichol zu Abraham und sagte zu ihm: »Gott lässt dir alles gelingen, was du tust.23Darum schwöre hier und jetzt bei Gott, dass du weder mich noch meine Nachkommen hintergehen wirst! Ich habe dir nur Gutes getan, darum sei auch gut zu mir und dem ganzen Land, in dem du zu Gast bist!«24»Ich schwöre«, antwortete Abraham.25Er beschwerte sich aber bei Abimelech darüber, dass dessen Knechte einen seiner Brunnen weggenommen hatten.26»Das höre ich jetzt zum ersten Mal!«, erwiderte Abimelech. »Auch du hast mir bisher nichts davon erzählt! Ich weiß nicht, wer das getan hat!«27Abraham gab Abimelech Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, und sie schlossen einen Vertrag miteinander.28Dann wählte Abraham noch sieben Lämmer aus und trennte sie vom Rest seiner Herde.29»Was soll das bedeuten?«, fragte Abimelech.30»Die sollst du von mir annehmen. Damit bestätigst du, dass ich den Brunnen gegraben habe und er mir gehört«, antwortete Abraham.31Seit dieser Zeit wurde der Ort Beerscheba (»Brunnen des Schwurs«[1]) genannt, weil Abraham und Abimelech ihre Abmachung dort mit einem Schwur besiegelt hatten.32Danach kehrten Abimelech und sein Heerführer Pichol wieder in das Land der Philister zurück.33Abraham pflanzte in Beerscheba eine Tamariske und betete dort zum HERRN, dem ewigen Gott.34Noch lange Zeit hielt er sich im Land der Philister auf.
1Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.2Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.3Abraham gave the name Isaac[1] to the son Sarah bore him.4When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.5Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.6Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’7And she added, ‘Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.’
Hagar and Ishmael sent away
8The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.9But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,10and she said to Abraham, ‘Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.’11The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.12But God said to him, ‘Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring[2] will be reckoned.13I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.’14Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.15When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.16Then she went off and sat down about a bow-shot away, for she thought, ‘I cannot watch the boy die.’ And as she sat there, she[3] began to sob.17God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, ‘What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.18Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.’19Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.20God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.21While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.
The treaty at Beersheba
22At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, ‘God is with you in everything you do.23Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness that I have shown to you.’24Abraham said, ‘I swear it.’25Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.26But Abimelek said, ‘I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.’27So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.28Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,29and Abimelek asked Abraham, ‘What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?’30He replied, ‘Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well.’31So that place was called Beersheba,[4] because the two men swore an oath there.32After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.34And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
