1 L'Éternel lui apparut parmi les chênes de Mamré, comme il était assis à l'entrée de sa tente, pendant la chaleur du jour. 2 Il leva les yeux, et regarda: et voici, trois hommes étaient debout près de lui. Quand il les vit, il courut au-devant d'eux, depuis l'entrée de sa tente, et se prosterna en terre. 3 Et il dit: Seigneur, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe point, je te prie, loin de ton serviteur. 4 Permettez qu'on apporte un peu d'eau, pour vous laver les pieds; et reposez-vous sous cet arbre. 5 J'irai prendre un morceau de pain, pour fortifier votre coeur; après quoi, vous continuerez votre route; car c'est pour cela que vous passez près de votre serviteur. Ils répondirent: Fais comme tu l'as dit. 6 Abraham alla promptement dans sa tente vers Sara, et il dit: Vite, trois mesures de fleur de farine, pétris, et fais des gâteaux. 7 Et Abraham courut à son troupeau, prit un veau tendre et bon, et le donna à un serviteur, qui se hâta de l'apprêter. 8 Il prit encore de la crème et du lait, avec le veau qu'on avait apprêté, et il les mit devant eux. Il se tint lui-même à leurs côtés, sous l'arbre. Et ils mangèrent. 9 Alors ils lui dirent: Où est Sara, ta femme? Il répondit: Elle est là, dans la tente. 10 L'un d'entre eux dit: Je reviendrai vers toi à cette même époque; et voici, Sara, ta femme, aura un fils. Sara écoutait à l'entrée de la tente, qui était derrière lui. 11 Abraham et Sara étaient vieux, avancés en âge: et Sara ne pouvait plus espérer avoir des enfants. 12 Elle rit en elle-même, en disant: Maintenant que je suis vieille, aurais-je encore des désirs? Mon seigneur aussi est vieux. 13 L'Éternel dit à Abraham: Pourquoi donc Sara a-t-elle ri, en disant: Est-ce que vraiment j'aurais un enfant, moi qui suis vieille? 14 Y a-t-il rien qui soit étonnant de la part de l'Éternel? Au temps fixé je reviendrai vers toi, à cette même époque; et Sara aura un fils. 15 Sara mentit, en disant: Je n'ai pas ri. Car elle eut peur. Mais il dit: Au contraire, tu as ri. 16 Ces hommes se levèrent pour partir, et ils regardèrent du côté de Sodome. Abraham alla avec eux, pour les accompagner. 17 Alors l'Éternel dit: Cacherai-je à Abraham ce que je vais faire?... 18 Abraham deviendra certainement une nation grande et puissante, et en lui seront bénies toutes les nations de la terre. 19 Car je l'ai choisi, afin qu'il ordonne à ses fils et à sa maison après lui de garder la voie de l'Éternel, en pratiquant la droiture et la justice, et qu'ainsi l'Éternel accomplisse en faveur d'Abraham les promesses qu'il lui a faites... 20 Et l'Éternel dit: Le cri contre Sodome et Gomorrhe s'est accru, et leur péché est énorme. 21 C'est pourquoi je vais descendre, et je verrai s'ils ont agi entièrement selon le bruit venu jusqu'à moi; et si cela n'est pas, je le saurai. 22 Les hommes s'éloignèrent, et allèrent vers Sodome. Mais Abraham se tint encore en présence de l'Éternel. 23 Abraham s'approcha, et dit: Feras-tu aussi périr le juste avec le méchant? 24 Peut-être y a-t-il cinquante justes au milieu de la ville: les feras-tu périr aussi, et ne pardonneras-tu pas à la ville à cause des cinquante justes qui sont au milieu d'elle? 25 Faire mourir le juste avec le méchant, en sorte qu'il en soit du juste comme du méchant, loin de toi cette manière d'agir! loin de toi! Celui qui juge toute la terre n'exercera-t-il pas la justice? 26 Et l'Éternel dit: Si je trouve dans Sodome cinquante justes au milieu de la ville, je pardonnerai à toute la ville, à cause d'eux. 27 Abraham reprit, et dit: Voici, j'ai osé parler au Seigneur, moi qui ne suis que poudre et cendre. 28 Peut-être des cinquante justes en manquera-t-il cinq: pour cinq, détruiras-tu toute la ville? Et l'Éternel dit: Je ne la détruirai point, si j'y trouve quarante-cinq justes. 29 Abraham continua de lui parler, et dit: Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il quarante justes. Et l'Éternel dit: Je ne ferai rien, à cause de ces quarante. 30 Abraham dit: Que le Seigneur ne s'irrite point, et je parlerai. Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il trente justes. Et l'Éternel dit: Je ne ferai rien, si j'y trouve trente justes. 31 Abraham dit: Voici, j'ai osé parler au Seigneur. Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il vingt justes. Et l'Éternel dit: Je ne la détruirai point, à cause de ces vingt. 32 Abraham dit: Que le Seigneur ne s'irrite point, et je ne parlerai plus que cette fois. Peut-être s'y trouvera-t-il dix justes. Et l'Éternel dit: Je ne la détruirai point, à cause de ces dix justes. 33 L'Éternel s'en alla lorsqu'il eut achevé de parler à Abraham. Et Abraham retourna dans sa demeure.

»Nächstes Jahr wirst du einen Sohn haben«

1 Abraham wohnte bei den Eichen von Mamre, da erschien ihm der HERR wieder. Es war um die heißeste Zeit des Tages, und Abraham saß gerade am Eingang seines Zeltes. 2 Als er aufblickte, bemerkte er plötzlich drei Männer, die ganz in der Nähe standen. Sofort sprang er auf, lief zu ihnen hinüber, verneigte sich bis zur Erde und bat: 3-5 »Herr^[1], bitte schenk mir deine Aufmerksamkeit und geh nicht einfach weiter! Ich lasse Wasser holen für eure Füße, ruht euch solange unter dem Baum aus; ich sorge für das Essen, damit ihr gestärkt weitergehen könnt! Ihr sollt nicht umsonst bei mir vorbeigekommen sein!« »Einverstanden«, sagten die drei, »tu, was du dir vorgenommen hast!« 6 Abraham lief ins Zelt zurück und rief Sara zu: »Schnell! Nimm 15 Kilo vom besten Mehl, das wir haben, rühr einen Teig an und backe Fladenbrote!« 7 Er lief weiter zu seiner Rinderherde, wählte ein zartes, gesundes Kalb aus und befahl seinem Knecht, es so schnell wie möglich zuzubereiten. 8 Den fertigen Braten bot er dann seinen Gästen mit Sauerrahm und Milch an. Sie saßen im Schatten des Baums, und während sie aßen, stand Abraham daneben und bediente sie. 9 »Wo ist denn deine Frau Sara?«, fragten sie ihn. »Hier im Zelt«, antwortete Abraham. 10 Da sagte einer der Männer: »Glaub mir, nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu euch, und dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.« Sara stand hinter ihnen im Zelteingang und lauschte. 11-12 Sie lachte heimlich. Denn Abraham und sie waren beide hochbetagt, und Sara konnte gar keine Kinder mehr bekommen. Darum dachte sie: »Ich bin alt und verbraucht, und meinem Mann geht es genauso. Wir werden uns wohl nie mehr über ein Kind freuen können. Nein, die Zeiten sind längst vorbei!« 13 Da sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Warum lacht Sara? Warum zweifelt sie an meinen Worten, dass sie noch ein Kind bekommen wird? 14 Für mich ist nichts unmöglich! Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu euch – dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.« 15 Sara fürchtete sich und log: »Ich habe nicht gelacht!« Aber Gott erwiderte ihr: »Doch, du hast gelacht!«

Abraham bittet für Sodom und Gomorra

16 Danach brachen die drei auf, und Abraham begleitete sie noch ein Stück. Als sie auf die Stadt Sodom hinabblickten, 17 fragte sich der HERR: »Soll ich wirklich vor Abraham verbergen, was ich mit Sodom und Gomorra vorhabe? 18 Nein, ich will es ihm nicht vorenthalten, schließlich wird er durch mich zum Stammvater eines großen und mächtigen Volkes. Und nicht nur das, alle Völker der Erde sollen durch ihn am Segen teilhaben. 19 Ich selbst habe ihn dazu auserwählt, dass er auch seine Familie und seine Nachkommen so zu leben lehrt, wie es mir gefällt. Sie sollen das Recht achten und Gerechtigkeit üben, damit ich meine Zusage einlösen kann, die ich Abraham gegeben habe.« 20 Darum sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Die Klagen über die Menschen von Sodom und Gomorra nehmen kein Ende; ihre Schuld schreit zum Himmel! 21 Ich gehe jetzt dorthin, um selbst nachzusehen. Ich will wissen, ob die Vorwürfe stimmen und die Leute es wirklich so schlimm treiben, wie ich gehört habe.« 22 Die beiden Begleiter gingen weiter in Richtung Sodom, nur der HERR blieb noch mit Abraham zurück. 23 Abraham trat näher heran und fragte: »Willst du wirklich rechtschaffene und gottlose Menschen zusammen vernichten? 24 Vielleicht findest du ja fünfzig Leute in der Stadt, die nichts Böses getan haben und dir dienen. Willst du die Stadt nicht um ihretwillen verschonen? 25 Lass nicht zu, dass der Schuldlose genauso sterben muss wie der Schuldige! Es wäre nicht recht, beide gleich zu behandeln. Du bist der Richter der ganzen Welt und kannst doch nicht gegen die Gerechtigkeit verstoßen!« 26 Da erwiderte der HERR: »Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Menschen finde, die so leben, wie es mir gefällt, werde ich um ihretwillen den ganzen Ort verschonen.« 27 Abraham aber ließ nicht locker: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, mich einzumischen, obwohl ich nur ein vergänglicher Mensch bin, nicht viel mehr als Staub und Asche. 28 Angenommen, es gibt bloß fünfundvierzig Menschen, die kein Unrecht getan haben. Willst du wegen der fehlenden fünf die ganze Stadt zerstören?« »Nein«, bekam er zur Antwort, »wenn ich fünfundvierzig finde, verschone ich die Stadt.« 29 Abraham tastete sich noch weiter vor: »Und wenn es nur vierzig sind?« Gott versprach: »Auch dann vernichte ich die Stadt nicht.« 30 »Bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich weiterrede«, bat Abraham, »vielleicht gibt es nur dreißig dort?« »Selbst dann werde ich es nicht tun.« 31 Abraham setzte zum fünften Mal an: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, Herr, mich einzumischen! Angenommen, es sind nur zwanzig?« Gott antwortete: »Dann werde ich die Stadt trotzdem verschonen.« 32 »Mein Herr«, sagte Abraham, »bitte werde nicht zornig, wenn ich zum Schluss noch einmal spreche: Was wirst du tun, wenn dort nur zehn unschuldige Menschen wohnen?« Wieder versprach Gott ihm: »Die zehn werden verschont bleiben und ebenso die ganze Stadt.« 33 Nachdem er dies gesagt hatte, ging er weiter, und Abraham kehrte zu seinem Zelt zurück.

The three visitors

1 The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. 3 He said, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord,^[1] do not pass your servant by. 4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree. 5 Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way – now that you have come to your servant.’ ‘Very well,’ they answered, ‘do as you say.’ 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. ‘Quick,’ he said, ‘get three seahs^[2] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.’ 7 Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it. 8 He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. 9 ‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ they asked him. ‘There, in the tent,’ he said. 10 Then one of them said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.’ Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’ 13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, “Will I really have a child, now that I am old?” 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.’ 15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, ‘I did not laugh.’ But he said, ‘Yes, you did laugh.’

Abraham pleads for Sodom

16 When the men got up to leave, they looked down towards Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.^[3] 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’ 20 Then the Lord said, ‘The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.’ 22 The men turned away and went towards Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.^[4] 23 Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare^[5] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?’ 26 The Lord said, ‘If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.’ 27 Then Abraham spoke up again: ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?’ ‘If I find forty-five there,’ he said, ‘I will not destroy it.’ 29 Once again he spoke to him, ‘What if only forty are found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of forty, I will not do it.’ 30 Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?’ He answered, ‘I will not do it if I find thirty there.’ 31 Abraham said, ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.’ 32 Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.’ 33 When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.
