1 And the famine was sore in the land. 2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. 3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food: 5 But if thou wilt not send him , we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. 6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother? 7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down? 8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. 9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever: 10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time. 11 And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds: 12 And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight: 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man: 14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children , I am bereaved. 15 And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. 16 And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon. 17 And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph' house. 18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph' house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses. 19 And they came near to the steward of Joseph' house, and they communed with him at the door of the house, 20 And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man' money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. 22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks. 23 And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them. 24 And the man brought the men into Joseph' house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender. 25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. 27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? 28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. 29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother' son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. 30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. 31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. 32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another. 34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin' mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

Da sagte ihr Vater zu ihnen: „Geht noch einmal hin und kauft uns etwas zu essen!“ 3 Juda entgegnete: „Der Mann hat uns ernstlich verwarnt und gesagt: 'Kommt mir nicht unter die Augen ohne euren Bruder!' 4 Wenn du unseren Bruder mitgehen lässt, ziehen wir hin und kaufen Nahrung für dich; 5 wenn nicht, bleiben wir hier, denn der Mann hat gesagt: 'Kommt mir nicht unter die Augen ohne euren Bruder!'“ 6 Da sagte Israel: „Warum habt ihr mir das Leid angetan und ihm verraten, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt?“ 7 Sie erwiderten: „Der Mann erkundigte sich genau nach uns und unserer Familie. 'Lebt euer Vater noch?', wollte er wissen. 'Habt ihr noch einen Bruder?' Da haben wir ihm gesagt, wie es sich verhält. Wir konnten doch nicht ahnen, dass er sagen würde: 'Bringt euren Bruder her!'“ 8 Da sagte Juda zu seinem Vater Israel: „Schick den Jungen mit mir, damit wir aufbrechen können und nicht alle sterben müssen, wir und du und unsere Kinder. 9 Ich selbst will Bürge für ihn sein. Von mir sollst du ihn zurückfordern. Mein Leben lang will ich vor dir schuldig sein, wenn ich ihn nicht lebend zu dir zurückbringe! 10 Hätten wir nicht so lange gezögert, wären wir schon zweimal wieder da.“ 11 Da sagte Israel, ihr Vater, zu ihnen: „Wenn es also sein muss, nehmt ihn mit. Aber nehmt dem Mann ein Geschenk vom Besten unseres Landes mit: ein wenig Mastix, Tragakant und Ladanum,^[1] ein wenig Traubenhonig,^[2] Pistazien und Mandeln! (Ge 37:25) 12 Nehmt auch den doppelten Geldbetrag mit und bringt das Geld, das sich oben in euren Säcken fand, eigenhändig zurück. Vielleicht war es ein Versehen. 13 Und dann nehmt euren Bruder mit und kehrt zu dem Mann zurück! 14 El-Schaddai, der allmächtige Gott, lasse euch Erbarmen finden bei dem Mann, dass er euren anderen Bruder und Benjamin wieder mit euch heimkehren lässt. Und ich – wenn ich kinderlos sein soll, muss ich eben kinderlos sein.“

Zweite Reise nach Ägypten

15 Dann packten die Männer das doppelte Geld und die Geschenke ein und reisten mit Benjamin nach Ägypten. So kamen sie zu Josef. 16 Als Josef Benjamin bei ihnen sah, sagte er zu seinem Hausverwalter: „Lass die Männer ins Haus kommen, lass schlachten und zurichten, denn sie sollen bei mir zu Mittag essen!“ 17 Der gehorchte und führte die Männer zum Haus Josefs. 18 Als sie merkten, dass sie dorthin geführt wurden, bekamen sie Angst und sagten zueinander: „Das ist wegen des Geldes, das wieder in unsere Säcke geraten ist. Sie werden über uns herfallen, uns die Esel wegnehmen und uns zu Sklaven machen.“ 19 Darum wandten sie sich an den Verwalter Josefs und sprachen ihn noch vor dem Tor an. 20 „Bitte Herr“, sagten sie zu ihm, „wir sind das vorige Mal wirklich nur hergekommen, um Getreide zu kaufen. 21 Als wir dann aber in die Herberge kamen und unsere Säcke öffneten, fanden wir das ganze Geld, das wir bezahlt hatten, oben im Sack liegen. Darum haben wir es wieder mitgebracht 22 und dazu neues Geld, um Nahrungsmittel zu kaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer uns das Geld wieder in die Säcke gelegt hat.“ 23 Doch er sagte: „Friede sei mit euch! Habt keine Angst! Euer Gott, der Gott eures Vaters, hat euch einen Schatz in eure Säcke gegeben! Euer Geld habe ich erhalten.“ Dann brachte er Simeon zu ihnen 24 und führte sie alle miteinander in Josefs Haus. Er ließ ihnen Wasser bringen, damit sie ihre Füße waschen konnten, und ihren Eseln ließ er Futter geben. 25 Sie legten inzwischen die Geschenke zurecht, bis Josef am Mittag käme, denn sie hatten gehört, dass sie dort essen sollten. 26 Als Josef nach Hause kam, brachten sie ihm die Geschenke und warfen sich vor ihm auf den Boden. 27 Josef erkundigte sich nach ihrem Wohlergehen und fragte dann: „Geht es eurem alten Vater wohl, von dem ihr gesprochen habt? Lebt er noch?“ 28 Sie sagten: „Es geht deinem Diener, unserem Vater, gut. Ja, er lebt noch.“ Und noch einmal warfen sie sich vor ihm nieder. 29 Da erblickte er seinen Bruder Benjamin, den Sohn seiner eigenen Mutter. „Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr gesprochen habt?“, fragte er und sagte: „Gott segne dich, mein Sohn!“ 30 Dann lief er schnell hinaus, denn beim Anblick seines Bruders wurde er sehr bewegt und war nahe daran zu weinen. Er ging in sein Privatzimmer und weinte dort. 31 Dann wusch er sich das Gesicht und kam zurück. Er nahm sich zusammen und befahl: „Tragt das Essen auf!“ 32 Man trug das Essen auf, getrennt für ihn, für sie und für die anwesenden Ägypter. Ägypter essen nicht an einem Tisch mit Hebräern, denn das gilt ihnen als Gräuel. 33 Die Brüder kamen vor Josef zu sitzen, genau nach ihrem Alter geordnet. Da sahen sie sich staunend an. 34 Josef ließ ihnen von den Gerichten servieren, die auf seinem eigenen Tisch aufgetragen wurden. Die Portion Benjamins war fünfmal größer als die der anderen. Sie tranken mit ihm, bis sie in ausgelassener Stimmung waren.

Benjamin part avec ses frères en Egypte

1 La famine sévissait de plus en plus durement dans le pays. 2 Quand la famille de Jacob eut mangé tout le blé rapporté d’Egypte^[1], Jacob dit à ses fils: Retournez là-bas nous acheter un peu de vivres. (Ge 45:6) 3 Juda lui répondit: Cet homme nous a solennellement avertis que nous ne pourrons plus nous présenter devant lui si notre frère ne nous accompagne pas. 4 Si tu laisses notre frère partir avec nous, nous irons en Egypte et nous t’achèterons des vivres. 5 Mais si tu ne le laisses pas venir, nous ne partirons pas; car cet homme nous a bien dit: « Vous ne serez pas admis en ma présence si votre frère n’est pas avec vous. » 6 Israël reprit: Pourquoi m’avez-vous causé ce tort? Aviez-vous besoin de raconter à cet homme que vous avez encore un frère? 7 Ils lui répondirent: Cet homme nous a questionnés en détail sur nous et sur notre parenté. Il nous a demandé: « Votre père vit-il encore? Avez-vous un autre frère? » Et nous avons répondu à ces questions. Pouvions-nous savoir qu’il nous ordonnerait de lui amener notre frère? 8 Alors Juda dit à Israël, son père: Laisse partir le jeune homme avec moi. Nous nous mettrons en route et nous irons là-bas pour pouvoir survivre. Sinon, nous mourrons tous, et nous, et toi et nos jeunes enfants. 9 Je le prends sous ma responsabilité, tu m’en demanderas compte. Si je ne te le ramène pas, si je ne le fais pas revenir là, devant toi, je serai pour toujours coupable envers toi. 10 Si nous n’avions pas tant tardé, nous serions déjà deux fois de retour. 11 Leur père Israël leur dit: Eh bien! Si c’est ainsi, faites ceci: Mettez dans vos bagages les meilleurs produits du pays et offrez-les à cet homme: un peu de baume et un peu de miel, de l’astragale, du laudanum, des pistaches et des amandes. 12 Prenez avec vous le double de la somme voulue et restituez l’argent qui a été remis à l’entrée de vos sacs. Peut-être s’agissait-il d’une erreur. 13 Emmenez votre frère et partez, retournez chez cet homme. 14 Que le Dieu tout-puissant rende cet homme compatissant à votre égard. Qu’il vous rende votre autre frère ainsi que Benjamin. Quant à moi, comme je dois être privé d’enfants, que j’en sois privé! 15 Alors ils se chargèrent du présent, prirent avec eux une double somme d’argent et emmenèrent Benjamin. Ainsi ils se mirent en route, se rendirent en Egypte et se présentèrent devant Joseph.

Le repas chez Joseph

16 Joseph vit avec eux Benjamin, il dit alors à l’intendant qui gérait sa maison: Conduis ces gens chez moi, fais abattre une bête et qu’on l’apprête, car ces hommes mangeront avec moi à midi. 17 L’intendant exécuta les ordres de son maître et conduisit ces gens à la maison de Joseph. 18 Ceux-ci furent effrayés d’être introduits dans la maison de Joseph et dirent: C’est à cause de l’argent remis la dernière fois dans nos sacs qu’on nous fait venir. Ils vont débouler sur nous, tomber sur nous pour nous prendre comme esclaves et s’emparer de nos ânes. 19 Ils s’approchèrent de l’intendant de la maison de Joseph et lui parlèrent à l’entrée de la maison: 20 Excuse-nous, mon seigneur: en fait nous sommes déjà venus une première fois pour acheter des vivres. 21 Quand nous sommes arrivés à l’étape où nous avons passé la nuit, nous avons ouvert nos sacs et chacun de nous a retrouvé son argent à l’ouverture de son sac, c’était exactement la somme que nous avions payée. Alors nous l’avons rapportée, 22 et nous avons emporté avec nous une autre somme d’argent pour acheter des vivres. Nous ne savons pas qui a remis notre argent dans nos sacs! 23 L’intendant répondit: Tout va bien; ne craignez rien. C’est votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père, qui a mis un trésor dans vos sacs. Votre argent m’a bien été remis. Puis il relâcha Siméon et le leur fit amener. 24 Il les introduisit ensuite dans la maison de Joseph. Il leur apporta de l’eau pour qu’ils se lavent les pieds et fit porter du fourrage pour leurs ânes. 25 Ils préparèrent leur présent en attendant l’arrivée de Joseph pour midi; ils avaient, en effet, appris qu’ils mangeraient là. 26 Joseph rentra chez lui. Ils lui offrirent le présent qu’ils avaient apporté et se prosternèrent à terre devant lui. 27 Il prit de leurs nouvelles et leur demanda: Votre père âgé dont vous m’avez parlé, se porte-t-il bien? Vit-il encore? 28 Ils répondirent en s’inclinant et en se prosternant jusqu’à terre: Ton serviteur, notre père, est encore en vie et il va bien. 29 En apercevant son frère Benjamin, fils de sa mère, il demanda: Est-ce là votre frère cadet dont vous m’avez parlé? Et il ajouta: Que Dieu te témoigne sa grâce, mon fils! 30 Joseph sortit en hâte car la vue de son frère l’avait profondément ému, et il chercha un endroit pour laisser couler ses larmes; il se retira dans sa chambre et pleura. 31 Puis il se lava le visage et ressortit. Il contint son émotion et ordonna de servir le repas. 32 On les servit séparément, lui à une table, ses frères à une autre, et les Egyptiens qui mangeaient avec lui à une troisième table. En effet, les Egyptiens ne peuvent pas prendre leurs repas avec les Hébreux: ils considèrent cela comme une chose abominable. 33 On fit asseoir les frères en face de Joseph, par ordre d’âge, de l’aîné au plus jeune, de sorte qu’ils se regardaient l’un l’autre avec stupéfaction. 34 Joseph leur fit servir des mets de sa propre table; Benjamin reçut une part cinq fois plus copieuse que celle des autres. Ainsi ils burent tout leur saoûl avec lui.
