1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother' keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother' blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother' blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. 19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. 21 And his brother' name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. 22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. 24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. 25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she , hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

1 Adam hatte mit seiner Frau Eva geschlafen. Nun wurde sie schwanger und gebar Kain. Da sagte sie: "Ich habe einen Mann erworben:^[1] Jahwe."^[2] 2 Danach bekam sie seinen Bruder Abel.^[3] Abel wurde ein Schafhirt,^[4] Kain ein Landwirt. 3 Nach geraumer Zeit brachte Kain vom Ertrag seines Feldes Jahwe ein Opfer. 4 Auch Abel brachte ihm eine Opfergabe, das Beste von den erstgeborenen Lämmern seiner Herde. Jahwe sah freundlich auf Abel und sein Opfer.^[5] (Heb 11:4; 1Jo 3:12) 5 Aber auf Kain und seine Opfergabe achtete er nicht. Da geriet Kain in heftigen Zorn und senkte finster sein Gesicht. 6 Jahwe fragte ihn: "Warum bist du so zornig? / Was soll dein finsterer Blick? 7 Hast du Gutes im Sinn, / dann heb den Kopf hoch! / Wenn aber nicht, / dann liegt die Sünde schon vor der Tür / und sie hat Verlangen nach dir. / Aber du musst es sein, der über sie herrscht!" 8 Doch Kain sprach seinen Bruder an.^[6] Und als sie auf dem Feld waren, fiel er über Abel her und schlug ihn tot. 9 Da sagte Jahwe zu Kain: "Wo ist Abel, dein Bruder?" Der entgegnete: "Ich weiß es nicht. Bin ich etwa sein Aufpasser?" 10 "Was hast du da getan!", sagte Gott. "Hörst du nicht das Blut deines Bruders aus dem Ackerboden zu mir schreien? 11 Verflucht sollst du sein, verbannt vom Ackerboden! Denn du hast ihn mit dem Blut deines Bruders getränkt. 12 Wenn du ihn künftig bebaust, wird er dir keinen Ertrag mehr bringen. Als ruheloser Flüchtling wirst du auf der Erde umherirren." 13 Da sagte Kain zu Jahwe: "Diese Strafe ist zu schwer für mich. Ich werde sie nicht ertragen können. 14 Du vertreibst mich vom fruchtbaren Land, und auch vor dir muss ich mich verstecken. Als ruheloser Flüchtling werde ich umherirren, und jeder, der mich findet,^[7] kann mich erschlagen." 15 "Nein", erwiderte Jahwe, "ich ordne an: Wer Kain erschlägt, wird siebenfach bestraft!" Und er machte ein Zeichen an Kain, damit niemand es wagen würde, ihn zu erschlagen, wenn er ihm begegnete. 16 So verließ Kain die Nähe Jahwes und siedelte sich östlich von Eden an, im Land der Heimatlosigkeit, in Nod. 17 Als Kain mit seiner Frau schlief, wurde sie schwanger und gebar Henoch. Und als Kain dann eine Stadt gründete, benannte er sie nach seinem Sohn Henoch. 18 Dem Henoch wurde Irad geboren. Irad zeugte Mehujaël und der wiederum Metuschaël. Metuschaël wurde der Vater von Lamech. 19 Lamech aber nahm sich zwei Frauen: Eine hieß Ada, die andere Zilla. 20 Ada gebar ihm Jabal. Das wurde der erste aller Nomaden, die in Zelten bei ihren Herden wohnen. 21 Sein Bruder hieß Jubal. Er war der erste aller späteren Zither- und Flötenspieler. 22 Auch Zilla bekam einen Sohn, Tubal-Kain, den Schmied. Er war der Erste, der Kupfer und Eisen bearbeitete. Seine Schwester hieß Naama. 23 Lamech sagte zu seinen Frauen: "Ada und Zilla, hört meine Rede! / Lamechs Frauen, lauscht meinem Spruch! / Ich habe den Mann erschlagen, der mich verwundet hat, / und den Jungen getötet, der mich berührte. 24 Wird Kain siebenfach gerächt, / dann Lamech siebenundsiebzigfach!" 25 Nachdem Adam wieder mit seiner Frau geschlafen hatte, gebar sie ihm einen Sohn und nannte ihn Set, Setzling. "Gott hat mir wieder einen Sprössling geschenkt", sagte sie, "anstelle von Abel, weil Kain ihn erschlug." 26 Auch Set wurde ein Sohn geboren. Enosch, sterblicher Mensch, nannte er ihn. Damals fing man an, den Namen Jahwes anzurufen.

1 L’homme s’unit à Eve, sa femme; elle devint enceinte et donna naissance à Caïn. Elle dit: J’ai formé un homme avec l’aide de l’Eternel. 2 Elle mit encore au monde le frère de Caïn, Abel. Abel devint berger et Caïn cultivateur. 3 Au bout d’un certain temps, Caïn présenta des produits de la terre en offrande à l’Eternel. 4 Abel, lui aussi, fit une offrande: il présenta les premiers-nés de son troupeau et en offrit les meilleurs morceaux. L’Eternel prêta attention à Abel et à son offrande^[1]; (Heb 11:4) 5 mais pas à Caïn et son offrande. Cela mit Caïn dans une grande colère, et son visage s’assombrit. 6 L’Eternel dit à Caïn: Pourquoi es-tu en colère et pourquoi ton visage est-il sombre? 7 Si tu agis bien, tu le relèveras. Mais si tu n’agis pas bien, le péché est tapi à ta porte: son désir se porte vers toi, mais toi, domine-le! 8 Mais Caïn dit à son frère Abel: Allons aux champs^[2]. J’entends le sang de ton frère crier vengeance depuis la terre jusqu’à moi. 11 Maintenant, tu es maudit et chassé loin du sol qui a bu le sang de ton frère versé par ta main. 12 Lorsque tu cultiveras le sol, il te refusera désormais ses produits, tu seras errant et fugitif sur la terre. 13 Caïn dit à l’Eternel: Ma faute est trop lourde à porter. 14 Voici que tu me chasses aujourd’hui loin du sol fertile, et je devrai me cacher loin de toi, je serai errant et fugitif sur la terre et si quelqu’un me trouve, il me tuera. 15 L’Eternel lui dit: Eh bien! Si on tue Caïn, il sera vengé sept fois. Et l’Eternel marqua Caïn d’un signe pour qu’il ne soit pas tué par qui le rencontrerait. 16 Caïn partit loin de l’Eternel: il alla séjourner au pays de Nod, le pays de l’Errance, à l’orient d’Eden, le pays des Délices.

17 Caïn s’unit à sa femme, elle devint enceinte et mit au monde Hénok. Caïn bâtissait une ville qu’il appela Hénok, du nom de son fils. 18 Hénok fut l’ancêtre d’Irad, qui eut pour descendants: Mehouyaël, Metoushaël et Lémek. 19 Lémek prit deux femmes pour épouses: l’une s’appelait Ada et l’autre Tsilla. 20 Ada mit au monde Yabal, le père des nomades habitant sous des tentes et au milieu de leurs troupeaux. 21 Il avait pour frère Youbal, le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la lyre et de la flûte. 22 Tsilla, de son côté, mit au monde Toubal-Caïn, qui forgeait tous les instruments de bronze et de fer. La sœur de Toubal-Caïn s’appelait Naama. 23 Lémek dit à ses femmes: Ada et Tsilla, ╵écoutez-moi bien, femmes de Lémek, ╵et prêtez l’oreille ╵à ce que je dis: J’ai tué un homme ╵pour une blessure et un jeune enfant ╵pour prix de ma plaie. 24 Caïn sera vengé sept fois et Lémek soixante-dix-sept fois. 25 Adam s’unit encore à sa femme et elle mit au monde un fils qu’elle nomma Seth car, dit-elle, Dieu m’a suscité une autre descendance pour remplacer Abel que Caïn a tué. 26 Seth aussi eut un fils qu’il appela Enosh. C’est à cette époque-là qu’on a commencé à prier l’Eternel.
