1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother' father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother' brother. 3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; 4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham. 5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob' and Esau' mother. 6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; 7 And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram; 8 And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father; 9 Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham' son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife. 10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran. 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; 14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. 18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, 21 So that I come again to my father' house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God: 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God' house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Jakobs Flucht nach Haran

1 Da ließ Isaak Jakob zu sich rufen. Er segnete ihn und sagte: „Du darfst dir keine Frau aus dem Land Kanaan nehmen. 2 Zieh ins obere Mesopotamien zur Sippe Betuëls, des Vaters deiner Mutter, und nimm dir eine Frau von den Töchtern Labans, des Bruders deiner Mutter. 3 El-Schaddai, der allmächtige Gott, wird dich segnen. Er mache dich fruchtbar und lasse dich zahlreich werden, sodass aus dir eine ganze Schar von Völkern wird. 4 Er gebe dir und deinen Nachkommen den Segen Abrahams, damit du das Land in Besitz nimmst, das Gott Abraham gegeben hat und in dem du jetzt noch als Fremder lebst!“ 5 So ließ Isaak Jakob ziehen, und dieser machte sich auf den Weg ins obere Mesopotamien zu Laban, dem Sohn des Aramäers Betuël, dem Bruder Rebekkas, seiner und Esaus Mutter. 6 Als nun Esau erfuhr, dass Isaak Jakob gesegnet und ins obere Mesopotamien geschickt hatte, damit er sich dort eine Frau suche, und dass er ihm beim Segnen befohlen hatte: „Du darfst dir keine Frau aus dem Land Kanaan nehmen!“, 7 und dass Jakob seinem Vater und seiner Mutter gehorcht hatte und bereits aufgebrochen war, 8 da begriff Esau, dass die Frauen Kanaans seinem Vater zuwider waren. 9 Er ging zu Ismaël und nahm zu seinen Frauen noch eine weitere hinzu, nämlich Mahalat, die Tochter Ismaëls, die Schwester Nebajots und Enkelin Abrahams. 10 Jakob hatte sich von Beerscheba auf den Weg nach Haran gemacht. 11 Dabei kam er an einen bestimmten Ort und übernachtete dort, weil die Sonne schon untergegangen war. Er nahm einen der Steine des Platzes, machte ihn zu seinem Kopflager und legte sich schlafen. 12 Im Traum sah er einen Treppenaufgang,^[1] dessen Spitze bis an den Himmel reichte. Engel stiegen auf ihm hinauf und herab. 13 Und auf einmal stand Jahwe über ihm und sagte: „Ich bin Jahwe, der Gott deines Vaters Abraham und der Gott Isaaks. Das Land, auf dem du liegst, will ich dir und deinen Nachkommen geben. 14 Deine Nachkommen werden zahlreich sein wie der Staub auf der Erde. Du wirst dich ausbreiten nach Westen und Osten, Norden und Süden. Durch dich und deine Nachkommenschaft sollen alle Sippen der Erde gesegnet werden. 15 Und ich werde dir beistehen. Ich beschütze dich überall, wohin du gehst, und bringe dich wieder in dieses Land zurück. Ich werde dich nicht verlassen und tue alles, was ich dir versprochen habe.“ 16 Da erwachte Jakob und sagte: „Tatsächlich, Jahwe ist an diesem Ort, und ich habe es nicht gewusst.“ 17 Er fürchtete sich und rief: „Ehrfurcht gebietet dieser Ort! Hier ist wirklich das Haus Gottes, das Tor des Himmels.“ 18 Früh am Morgen stand Jakob auf. Er stellte den Stein, der an seinem Kopfende gelegen hatte, als Gedenkstein auf, goss Öl auf seine Spitze 19 und gab dem Ort den Namen Bet-El, Haus Gottes. Vorher hieß der Ort Lus. 20 Dann legte Jakob ein Gelübde ab: „Wenn Gott mir beisteht und mich auf meiner Reise behütet, wenn er mir Nahrung und Kleidung gibt 21 und ich wohlbehalten zu meiner Familie zurückkomme, dann soll Jahwe mein Gott sein. 22 Und hier an dieser Stelle, wo ich den Stein aufgestellt habe, soll ein Haus Gottes stehen. Und von allem, was du mir gibst, werde ich dir treu den zehnten Teil zurückgeben.“

1 Alors Isaac appela Jacob, il le bénit et lui donna cet ordre: Tu n’épouseras pas une Cananéenne. 2 Mets-toi en route, va à Paddân-Aram chez Betouel, ton grand-père maternel, et prends une femme de là-bas parmi les filles de ton oncle Laban. 3 Le Dieu tout-puissant te bénira, il te donnera des enfants, il rendra tes descendants nombreux et tu deviendras l’ancêtre d’un grand nombre de peuples. 4 Il te transmettra la bénédiction d’Abraham à toi et à ta descendance, afin que tu hérites le pays dans lequel tu habites en immigrant et que Dieu a donné à Abraham^[1]. (Ge 17:4) 5 Jacob, envoyé par son père, partit donc pour Paddân-Aram, et il se rendit chez Laban, fils de Betouel l’Araméen, et frère de Rébecca, sa mère et celle d’Esaü. 6 Esaü vit qu’Isaac avait béni Jacob et qu’il l’avait envoyé à Paddân-Aram pour y trouver une épouse, et qu’en le bénissant il lui avait ordonné de ne pas épouser une fille du pays de Canaan, 7 que Jacob avait obéi à son père et à sa mère et qu’il était parti pour Paddân-Aram. 8 Il comprit alors que les filles de Canaan étaient mal vues de son père, 9 Esaü se rendit chez Ismaël, fils d’Abraham, et épousa, en plus de ses autres femmes, sa fille Mahalath, la sœur de Nebayoth.

Béthel, « Maison de Dieu »

10 Jacob avait quitté Beer-Sheva et marchait en direction de Harân^[2]. 11 Comme le soleil se couchait, il prit une pierre pour s’en faire un oreiller et se coucha pour passer ainsi la nuit dans le lieu qu’il avait atteint. 12 Dans son rêve, il vit une sorte d’escalier reposant sur la terre, et dont le haut atteignait le ciel. Et voici que des anges de Dieu montaient et descendaient cet escalier^[3]. (Joh 1:51) 13 L’Eternel lui-même se tenait tout en haut et lui dit: Je suis l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Abraham ton ancêtre et le Dieu d’Isaac. Cette terre sur laquelle tu reposes, je te la donnerai, à toi et à ta descendance. 14 Elle sera aussi nombreuse que la poussière de la terre; elle étendra son territoire dans toutes les directions: vers l’ouest et l’est, vers le nord et le sud. Par toi et par elle, toutes les familles de la terre seront bénies^[4]. (Ge 12:3; Ge 13:16) 15 Et voici: je suis moi-même avec toi, je te garderai partout où tu iras; et je te ferai revenir vers cette région; je ne t’abandonnerai pas mais j’accomplirai ce que je t’ai promis. 16 Jacob s’éveilla et s’écria: Assurément, l’Eternel est en ce lieu, et moi je l’ignorais! 17 Il fut saisi de crainte et ajouta: Ce lieu est redoutable! Ce ne peut être que le sanctuaire de Dieu. C’est ici la porte du ciel. 18 Le lendemain, de grand matin, il prit la pierre sur laquelle avait reposé sa tête, il la dressa en stèle et répandit de l’huile sur son sommet^[5]. 19 Il appela cet endroit Béthel (Maison de Dieu). Auparavant la localité s’appelait Louz. 20 Puis il fit le vœu suivant: Si Dieu est avec moi, s’il me protège au cours du voyage que je suis en train de faire, s’il me fournit de quoi manger et me vêtir, 21 et si je reviens sain et sauf chez mon père, alors l’Eternel sera mon Dieu. 22 Cette pierre que j’ai dressée comme stèle deviendra un sanctuaire de Dieu et je t’offrirai le dixième de tous les biens que tu m’accorderas.
