1This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:2That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:3Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,4And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:6Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,12Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?13Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;16As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
1Das ist bereits mein zweiter Brief an euch, liebe Geschwister. Durch beide wollte ich euch an längst Bekanntes erinnern, dass eure gute Gesinnung erwacht.2Ich möchte, dass ihr euch an das erinnert, was die heiligen Propheten vor langer Zeit sagten, und ebenso an das Gebot unseres Herrn und Retters, das euch durch eure Apostel erreichte.3Vor allen Dingen müsst ihr wissen, dass in den letzten Tagen Spötter auftreten werden, die sich darüber lustig machen und ihre eigenen Begierden ausleben.4Sie werden sagen: „Er hat doch versprochen wiederzukommen! Wo bleibt er denn? Inzwischen sind unsere Väter gestorben, aber alles ist immer noch so, wie es seit der Schöpfung von Anfang an war.“5Wer das behauptet, will nicht wahrhaben, dass es die Himmel schon längst gab und die Erde aus dem Wasser hervorgetreten und mit Wasser umgeben war. Gott hatte sie durch sein Wort geschaffen.6Dennoch wurde die Welt damals ‹bei der großen Flut auf Gottes Wort hin› durch Wasser überschwemmt und vernichtet.7Durch dasselbe Wort werden nun auch die jetzigen Himmel und die jetzige Erde für das Feuer aufgespart. Sie werden bewahrt bis zum Tag des Gerichts, an dem die Gottlosen zugrunde gehen.
Gnädige Verzögerung
8Eins dürft ihr dabei nicht übersehen, liebe Geschwister: Für den Herrn ist das, was ‹für uns› ein Tag ist, wie tausend Jahre; und was ‹für uns› tausend Jahre sind, ist ‹für ihn› wie ein einziger Tag.9Der Herr zögert seine Zusage nicht hinaus, wie manche das meinen. Im Gegenteil: Er hat noch Geduld mit euch, denn er will nicht, dass irgendjemand ins Verderben geht, sondern dass alle umkehren zu ihm.10Der Tag des Herrn wird aber so unerwartet kommen wie ein Dieb. Dann wird der Himmel unter schrecklichem Lärm vergehen und die Elemente in Hitze aufgelöst. Die Erde mit allen Menschenwerken darauf ist dann verbrannt.[1]11Wenn sich das alles nun so auflösen wird, was für ein Anliegen müsste es euch dann sein, ein Leben in Heiligkeit und Ehrfurcht vor Gott zu führen,12den Tag Gottes zu erwarten und seine Ankunft zu beschleunigen – den Tag, an dem die Himmel im Feuer verbrennen und die Elemente sich auflösen in dieser Glut.13Aber nach dem, was Gott uns versprochen hat, erwarten wir neue Himmel und eine neue Erde, in denen Gerechtigkeit regiert.
Nötige Wachsamkeit
14Weil ihr das alles erwartet, liebe Geschwister, setzt alles daran, dass ihr rein und tadellos und innerlich im Frieden vor euren Herrn hintreten könnt.15Und betrachtet die Geduld unseres Herrn als Gelegenheit zur Rettung. Genau das hat euch auch unser lieber Bruder Paulus geschrieben, dem Gott in all diesen Fragen viel Weisheit geschenkt hat.16In seinen Briefen redet er mehrfach davon. Freilich ist einiges darin auch schwer zu verstehen, was dann von unverständigen oder im Glauben nicht gefestigten Leuten verdreht wird. Aber so machen sie es ja auch mit den anderen Texten der Heiligen Schrift – zu ihrem eigenen Verderben.17Weil ihr das alles jetzt schon wisst, liebe Geschwister, passt auf, dass ihr nicht von dem Irrsinn der Gesetzesverächter mitgerissen werdet und euren festen Stand verliert.18Nehmt vielmehr in der Gnade zu und lernt unseren Herrn und Retter Jesus Christus immer besser kennen. Ihm gehört alle Herrlichkeit und Ehre, schon jetzt und auch in alle Ewigkeit! Amen.
1Mes chers amis, voici déjà la deuxième lettre que je vous écris; dans l’une comme dans l’autre, je cherche à stimuler en vous une saine manière de penser en vous rappelant l’enseignement que vous avez reçu.2Souvenez-vous, en effet, des paroles dites autrefois par les saints prophètes, ainsi que du commandement du Seigneur et Sauveur que vos apôtres vous ont transmis.3Sachez tout d’abord que, dans les derniers jours[1], des moqueurs viendront, qui vivront au gré de leurs propres désirs. Ils tourneront votre foi en ridicule en disant:4« Alors, qu’en est-il de la promesse de sa venue? Nos ancêtres sont morts et depuis que le monde est monde, rien n’a changé! »5Mais il y a un fait que ces gens oublient délibérément: c’est que Dieu, par sa parole, a créé autrefois le ciel et la terre. Il a séparé la terre des eaux et il l’a rassemblée du milieu des eaux.6De la même manière, Dieu a détruit le monde d’alors par les eaux du déluge.7Quant à la terre et aux cieux actuels, ils sont réservés par cette même parole pour être livrés au feu: ils sont gardés en vue du jour du jugement où tous ceux qui n’ont aucun respect pour Dieu périront.8Mais il y a un fait que vous ne devez pas oublier, mes chers amis: c’est que, pour le Seigneur, un jour est comme mille ans et mille ans sont comme un jour[2]. (Ps 90:4)9Le Seigneur n’est pas en retard dans l’accomplissement de sa promesse, comme certains se l’imaginent, il fait simplement preuve de patience à votre égard, car il ne veut pas qu’un seul périsse. Il voudrait, au contraire, que tous parviennent à se convertir[3].10Mais le jour du Seigneur viendra comme un voleur. En ce jour-là, le ciel disparaîtra dans un fracas terrifiant, les astres[4] embrasés se désagrégeront et la terre se trouvera jugée[5] avec toutes les œuvres qui auront été accomplies sur elle.11Puisque tout l’univers doit ainsi se désagréger, quelle vie sainte vous devez mener et avec quelle piété,12en attendant que vienne le jour de Dieu et en hâtant sa venue! Ce jour-là, le ciel en feu se désagrégera et les astres[6] embrasés fondront.13Mais nous, nous attendons, comme Dieu l’a promis, un nouveau ciel et une nouvelle terre où la justice habitera.14C’est pourquoi, mes chers amis, dans cette attente, faites tous vos efforts pour que Dieu vous trouve purs et irréprochables à ses yeux, dans la paix qu’il donne.15Comprenez bien que la patience du Seigneur a pour but votre salut. Paul, notre frère bien-aimé, vous l’a aussi écrit avec la sagesse que Dieu lui a donnée.16Il l’a fait comme dans toutes ses lettres, où il aborde ces sujets. Certes, il s’y trouve des passages difficiles à comprendre, dont les personnes ignorantes et mal affermies déforment le sens, comme elles le font aussi – pour leur propre ruine – des autres textes de l’Ecriture.

17Quant à vous, mes chers amis, vous voilà prévenus. Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser entraîner par l’égarement de ces hommes vivant sans respect pour Dieu et de perdre ainsi la position solide que vous occupez.18Au contraire, progressez sans cesse dans la grâce et dans la connaissance de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ. A lui soit la gloire dès maintenant et pour l’éternité. Amen.
