1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. 2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. 3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool' wrath is heavier than them both. 4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy? 5 Open rebuke is better than secret love. 6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. 7 The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. 8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place. 9 Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man' friend by hearty counsel. 10 Thine own friend, and thy father' friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother' house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. 11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me. 12 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished. 13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. 14 He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. 15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. 16 Whosoever hideth her hideth the wind, and the ointment of his right hand, which bewrayeth itself . 17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. 18 Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured. 19 As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man. 20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. 21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise. 22 Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him. 23 Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. 24 For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? 25 The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. 26 The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. 27 And thou shalt have goats'milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

1 Nu te lăuda cu ziua de mâine căci nu știi ce poate aduce o zi! 2 Să te laude altul, nu gura ta, un străin, nu buzele tale! 3 Piatra este grea, și nisipul atârnă ca o povară, dar supărarea provocată de un nebun este mai grea decât amândouă. 4 Furia este nemiloasă, mânia este cumplită, dar cine poate sta în fața geloziei? 5 Mai bine o mustrare pe față, decât o dragoste ascunsă^[1]! 6 Rănile făcute de un prieten dovedesc credincioșie, dar sărutările unui dușman sunt exagerate. 7 Cel sătul calcă în picioare mierea, dar pentru cel flămând chiar și hrana amară este dulce. 8 Ca o pasăre care rătăcește departe de cuibul ei, așa este omul care rătăcește departe de locul lui. 9 Uleiul și parfumul^[2] înveselesc inima, iar dulceața cuvintelor unui prieten vine din sfatul sufletului. 10 Nu‑ți părăsi prietenul, și nici prietenul tatălui tău, și nu intra în casa fratelui tău în ziua necazului tău; mai bine un vecin aproape decât un frate departe. 11 Fiule, fii înțelept și înveselește‑mi inima, căci astfel voi putea răspunde celui ce mă batjocorește! 12 Omul chibzuit vede pericolul și se ascunde, dar naivii merg înainte și sunt pedepsiți. 13 Ia‑i haina, căci a girat pentru un străin, și ține‑o garanție căci a girat pentru o străină! 14 Binecuvântarea semenului cu voce tare dis‑de‑dimineață este considerată ca un blestem. 15 Picăturile de ploaie care cad întruna într‑o zi ploioasă și o soție cicălitoare sunt tot una: 16 cine încearcă s‑o oprească^[3] parcă ar opri vântul și parcă ar apuca uleiul cu mâna dreaptă! 17 După cum fierul ascute fierul, tot astfel și omul însuși îl face mai ager^[4] pe semenul său. 18 Cine îngrijește de un smochin îi va mânca roadele, și cine veghează asupra stăpânului său va fi prețuit. 19 Așa cum în apă fața se reflectă ca față, tot astfel și inima omului îl reflectă pe om. 20 Așa cum Locuința Morților și Locul Nimicirii^[5] nu se satură niciodată, nici ochii omului nu se pot sătura. 21 Creuzetul este pentru argint, și cuptorul pentru aur^[6], dar un om este testat de lauda pe care o primește. 22 Chiar dacă ai pisa un nebun cu pisălogul în piuă, printre grăunțe, tot nu vei putea îndepărta nebunia de la el. 23 Îngrijește‑ți bine turmele și dă atenție cirezilor tale, 24 căci bogăția nu este veșnică și coroana nu rămâne din generație în generație! 25 După ce este îndepărtat fânul, și iarba nouă se arată, iar iarba de pe dealuri este strânsă, 26 mieii vor fi pentru îmbrăcăminte, și țapii pentru plata câmpului. 27 Vei avea lapte de capră destul pentru hrana ta, pentru hrana familiei tale și pentru întreținerea servitoarelor tale.
