1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Despre milostenie

1 Fiți atenți să nu vă îndepliniți dreptatea^[1] voastră înaintea oamenilor, ca să fiți văzuți de ei! Altfel, nu aveți nicio răsplată de la Tatăl vostru Care este în ceruri! 2 Astfel dar, atunci când faci milostenie, nu suna din trâmbiță înaintea ta, cum fac ipocriții în sinagogi și pe străzi, ca să fie slăviți de oameni. Adevărat vă spun că își primesc din plin răsplata! 3 Tu însă, când faci milostenie, să nu știe stânga ta ce face dreapta, 4 pentru ca milostenia ta sa fie făcută în ascuns, iar Tatăl tău, Care vede în ascuns, îți va răsplăti.

Despre rugăciune

5 Atunci când vă rugați, să nu fiți ca ipocriții, căci lor le place să se roage stând în picioare în sinagogi și la colțurile străzilor, ca să fie văzuți de oameni. Adevărat vă spun că își primesc din plin răsplata! (Mr 11:25; Lu 11:2) 6 Tu însă, când te rogi, intră în odăița^[2] ta, încuie ușa după tine și roagă‑te Tatălui tău, Care este în ascuns, iar Tatăl tău, Care vede în ascuns, îți va răsplăti. (Lu 12:24) 7 Când vă rugați, să nu repetați la nesfârșit aceleași cuvinte, ca neamurile^[3], care își închipuie că vor fi ascultate pentru vorbirea lor multă. 8 Voi să nu fiți ca ei, pentru că Tatăl vostru știe de ce anume aveți nevoie, mai înainte ca voi să‑I cereți. 9 Iată deci cum trebuie să vă rugați: «Tatăl nostru, Care ești în ceruri, sfințească‑se Numele Tău! 10 Vie Împărăția Ta, facă‑se voia Ta, precum în cer, așa și pe pământ! 11 Pâinea noastră, cea de toate zilele^[4], dă‑ne‑o nouă astăzi! 12 Și iartă‑ne datoriile noastre, precum și noi iertăm datornicilor noștri! 13 Și nu ne duce în ispită,^[5] ci scapă‑ne de cel rău^[6]! Căci a Ta este Împărăția și puterea, și slava, în veci. Amin!» (Mt 26:41; Jas 1:13) 14 Căci, dacă le iertați oamenilor nelegiuirile^[7], vi le va ierta și vouă Tatăl vostru cel ceresc, 15 dar, dacă nu le iertați oamenilor, nici Tatăl vostru nu vă va ierta nelegiuirile.

16 Atunci când postiți, nu fiți mohorâți ca ipocriții, căci ei își posomorăsc fețele ca să le arate oamenilor că postesc. Adevărat vă spun că își primesc din plin răsplata! 17 Tu însă, când postești, unge‑ți capul și spală‑ți fața, 18 ca să nu le arăți oamenilor că postești, ci Tatălui tău, Care este în ascuns, iar Tatăl tău, Care vede în ascuns, îți va răsplăti.

Despre adevăratele comori

19 Nu vă adunați comori pe pământ, unde le distrug moliile și rugina și unde le dezgroapă și le fură hoții, (Lu 11:34; Lu 12:33; Lu 16:13) 20 ci adunați‑vă comori în cer, unde nici molia, nici rugina nu le distrug și unde hoții nu le dezgroapă, nici nu le fură. 21 Căci, acolo unde este comoara ta, acolo va fi și inima ta. 22 Ochiul este candela trupului. Prin urmare, dacă ochiul tău este sănătos^[8], tot trupul tău va fi plin de lumină, (1Ch 29:17) 23 dar, dacă ochiul tău este rău^[9], atunci tot trupul tău va fi plin de întuneric. Așadar, dacă lumina care este în tine este întuneric, mare este întunericul acesta! (Mt 6:22) 24 Nimeni nu poate sluji la doi stăpâni: căci ori îl va urî pe unul și‑l va iubi pe celălalt, ori îi va fi devotat unuia și‑l va disprețui pe celălalt. Nu puteți sluji și lui Dumnezeu și bogăției^[10].

Despre îngrijorări

25 De aceea, vă spun: nu vă îngrijorați pentru viața^[11] voastră, gândindu‑vă ce veți mânca sau ce veți bea, nici pentru trupul vostru, gândindu‑vă cu ce vă veți îmbrăca! Oare nu este viața mai mult decât hrana, iar trupul mai mult decât îmbrăcămintea? (Lu 12:22) 26 Uitați‑vă la păsările cerului: ele nici nu seamănă, nici nu seceră și nici nu adună în hambare. Și totuși, Tatăl vostru cel ceresc le hrănește. Oare nu sunteți voi cu mult mai prețioși decât ele? 27 Și apoi, cine dintre voi, îngrijorându‑se, poate să adauge măcar un cot la lungimea vieții lui^[12]?! (Ps 39:5) 28 Și de ce vă îngrijorați cu privire la îmbrăcăminte? Uitați‑vă bine cum cresc crinii de pe câmp: ei nici nu se ostenesc, nici nu torc. 29 Și totuși, vă spun că nici chiar Solomon, în toată slava lui, nu s‑a îmbrăcat ca unul dintre ei! 30 Iar dacă Dumnezeu îmbracă astfel iarba de pe câmp, care astăzi este, dar mâine va fi aruncată în cuptor, oare nu vă va îmbrăca El cu mult mai mult pe voi, puțin credincioșilor!? 31 Așadar, să nu vă îngrijorați, zicând: «Ce vom mânca?» sau«Ce vom bea?» sau«Cu ce ne vom îmbrăca?», 32 fiindcă toate aceste lucruri neamurile le caută. Căci Tatăl vostru cel ceresc știe că aveți nevoie de toate acestea. 33 Căutați mai întâi Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și dreptatea Lui, și vi se vor da și toate acestea. 34 Nu vă îngrijorați deci de ziua de mâine, căci ziua de mâine se va îngrijora de ea însăși. Îi este de ajuns zilei necazul ei.
