1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. 2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD. 6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land. 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. 11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: 12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. 13 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth. 14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. 15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed. 16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so. 18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. 19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way. 20 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; 21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: 22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it , or not. 23 Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Sentința dată de Îngerul Domnului

1 Îngerul DOMNULUI S‑a suit de la Ghilgal la Bochim și a zis: „Eu v‑am scos din Egipt și v‑am adus în țara pe care le‑am promis‑o părinților voștri. Am zis: «Niciodată nu voi rupe legământul Meu cu voi. 2 Iar voi să nu încheiați legământ cu locuitorii acestei țări, ci să le dărâmați altarele.» Voi însă nu ați ascultat de glasul Meu. Ce‑ați făcut? 3 Acum vă spun din nou: «Nu‑i voi alunga dinaintea voastră, ci vă vor fi ca niște spini în coaste, iar dumnezeii lor vă vor fi o cursă.»“ 4 După ce Îngerul Domnului le‑a zis aceste cuvinte tuturor fiilor lui Israel, poporul și‑a ridicat glasul și a plâns. 5 Au pus acelui loc numele Bochim^[1] și au adus acolo jertfe DOMNULUI.

Starea poporului în timpul vieții lui Iosua și după moartea acestuia

6 După ce Iosua a dat drumul poporului, fiii lui Israel au plecat fiecare la moștenirea lui, ca să ia în stăpânire țara. 7 Poporul a slujit DOMNULUI cât timp a trăit Iosua și bătrânii de după Iosua, care văzuseră toată lucrarea cea măreață pe care o făcuse DOMNUL pentru Israel. 8 Iosua, fiul lui Nun, robul DOMNULUI, a murit la vârsta de o sută zece ani. 9 L‑au înmormântat în teritoriul moștenirii sale, la Timnat-Heres^[2], în muntele lui Efraim, la nord de muntele Gaaș. (Jos 19:50; Jos 24:30) 10 Apoi toată generația aceea a fost adăugată la părinții săi, iar după ea s‑a ridicat o altă generație care nu‑L cunoștea pe DOMNUL, și nici lucrarea făcută de El pentru Israel. 11 Atunci fiii lui Israel au făcut ce este rău în ochii DOMNULUI și au slujit BAALILOR^[3]. 12 L‑au părăsit pe DOMNUL, Dumnezeul părinților lor, Care‑i scosese din țara Egiptului, și s‑au dus după alți dumnezei, dintre dumnezeii popoarelor care‑i înconjurau. S‑au închinat înaintea lor și L‑au mâniat pe DOMNUL. 13 Astfel, L‑au părăsit pe DOMNUL și au slujit lui BAAL^[4] și AȘTORETELOR^[5]. 14 DOMNUL S‑a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel și i‑a dat pe israeliți pe mâna unor jefuitori care i‑au prădat. El i‑a vândut în mâinile dușmanilor din vecinătate, cărora n‑au mai fost în stare să li se împotrivească. 15 Oriunde mergeau, mâna DOMNULUI era împotriva lor ca să le facă rău, așa cum le spusese și le jurase El mai demult. Au ajuns astfel într‑un mare necaz. 16 DOMNUL le‑a ridicat judecători^[6] ca să‑i izbăvească din mâna jefuitorilor lor. 17 Dar nici de judecătorii lor n‑au ascultat, ci s‑au prostituat, ducându‑se după alți dumnezei și închinându‑se lor. S‑au abătut repede de la calea pe care umblaseră părinții lor, cei care ascultaseră de poruncile DOMNULUI, și nu au făcut ca ei. 18 Când DOMNUL le ridica judecători, DOMNUL era cu fiecare judecător și El Însuși îi izbăvea din mâna dușmanilor lor în toate zilele judecătorului. Căci DOMNULUI Îi părea rău când le vedea suspinul înaintea celor ce‑i prigoneau și‑i asupreau. 19 Dar după ce murea judecătorul, ei se întorceau iarăși la căile lor și se perverteau mai mult decât înaintașii lor, ducându‑se după alți dumnezei, slujindu‑le și închinându‑se înaintea lor. Și nu renunțau la faptele și la căile lor rele. 20 Atunci DOMNUL S‑a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel și a zis: „Fiindcă neamul acesta a încălcat legământul Meu pe care‑l poruncisem părinților lor și n‑au ascultat de glasul Meu, 21 nu voi mai continua să alung dinaintea lor pe niciunul din neamurile lăsate de Iosua când a murit, 22 pentru ca, prin ele, să‑l pun la încercare pe Israel și să văd dacă vor păzi sau nu Calea DOMNULUI, umblând pe ea așa cum au făcut părinții lor.“ 23 Prin urmare, DOMNUL a lăsat în pace acele neamuri. El nu S‑a grăbit să le alunge și nu le‑a dat în mâna lui Iosua.
