1Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;2That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.3Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,4Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.5Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.6And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.7So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.8And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.9Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.10And the LORD discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.11And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.12Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.13And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.14And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.15And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.16But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.17And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.18And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:19And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.20And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.21And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.22Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.23And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.24And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.25And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.26And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.27And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave' mouth, which remain until this very day.28And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.29Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:30And the LORD delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.31And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:32And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.34And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:35And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.36And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:37And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.38And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:39And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.40So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.41And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.42And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.43And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Era mai mare chiar decât Ai, și toți bărbații ei erau viteji.3Adoni-Țedek, regele Ierusalimului, le‑a trimis un mesaj lui Hoham, regele Hebronului, lui Piram, regele Iarmutului, lui Iafia, regele Lachișului și lui Debir, regele Eglonului, zicând:4„Suiți‑vă la mine și ajutați‑mă să atac Ghivonul, fiindcă a făcut pace cu Iosua și cu fiii lui Israel.“5Cei cinci regi ai amoriților – regele Ierusalimului, regele Hebronului, regele Iarmutului, regele Lachișului și regele Eglonului – s‑au adunat și s‑au suit împreună cu toate oștirile lor. Ei și‑au așezat tabăra lângă Ghivon și au luptat împotriva lui.6Bărbații Ghivonului au trimis atunci să‑i spună lui Iosua, în tabăra de la Ghilgal: „Nu‑i părăsi pe robii tăi! Suie‑te repede la noi și izbăvește‑ne! Ajută‑ne, căci toți regii amoriți care locuiesc pe munte s‑au adunat împotriva noastră!“7Iosua s‑a suit din Ghilgal împreună cu tot poporul pregătit de război și cu toți vitejii.8DOMNUL i‑a zis lui Iosua: „Nu te teme de ei, căci i‑am dat în mâna ta și niciunul nu‑ți va putea sta împotrivă!“9După ce s‑a suit toată noaptea din Ghilgal, Iosua a venit împotriva lor pe neașteptate.10DOMNUL i‑a făcut să intre în panică înaintea lui Israel, care i‑a provocat o mare înfrângere la Ghivon. El i‑a urmărit pe drumul care urcă la Bet‑Horon, nimicindu‑i pe drum până la Azeka și până la Makkeda.11În timp ce fugeau dinaintea lui Israel, pe povârnișul de la Bet‑Horon spre Azeka, DOMNUL a făcut să cadă din cer asupra lor pietre mari de grindină și ei au murit. Cei care au fost nimiciți de pietrele grindinei au fost în număr mai mare decât cei uciși cu sabia de către fiii lui Israel.12În ziua în care DOMNUL i‑a dat pe amoriți în mâna fiilor lui Israel, Iosua I‑a vorbit DOMNULUI și a zis în văzul lui Israel: „Soare, rămâi nemișcat deasupra Ghivonului și lună, rămâi peste valea Aialon.“13Soarele a rămas nemișcat, iar luna s‑a oprit până când poporul s‑a răzbunat pe dușmanii lui. Nu este scris lucrul acesta și în „Cartea lui Iașar“[2]? Soarele a rămas nemișcat în mijlocul cerului și nu s‑a grăbit să apună aproape o zi întreagă.14N‑a mai fost nicio zi ca aceea, nici înainte, nici după, o zi în care DOMNUL să fi ascultat de glasul unui om. Căci DOMNUL lupta pentru Israel.15Apoi Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul s‑au întors în tabăra de la Ghilgal.
Uciderea celor cinci regi amoriți
16Cei cinci regi însă fugiseră și se ascunseseră într‑o peșteră la Makkeda.17Când i s‑a spus lui Iosua că cei cinci regi au fost găsiți ascunși într‑o peșteră la Makkeda,18acesta a zis: „Rostogoliți niște pietre mari la gura peșterii și puneți acolo niște oameni ca să‑i păzească!19Voi însă nu vă opriți, ci continuați să‑i urmăriți pe dușmanii voștri și să‑i loviți din urmă până îi veți nimici! Nu‑i lăsați să intre în cetățile lor, căci DOMNUL, Dumnezeul vostru, a hotărât să‑i dea în mâna voastră.“20După ce Iosua și fiii lui Israel le‑au provocat o foarte mare înfrângere, până când aceștia au fost nimiciți (supraviețuitorii care au scăpat dintre ei au intrat în cetățile fortificate),21tot poporul s‑a întors în pace la Iosua în tabără, în Makkeda. Nimeni n‑a rostit vreun cuvânt[3] împotriva fiilor lui Israel.22Iosua a zis atunci: „Deschideți intrarea peșterii și aduceți‑i afară la mine pe cei cinci regi din peșteră!“23Ei au făcut întocmai: i‑au adus afară la el pe cei cinci regi din peșteră, și anume pe regele Ierusalimului, pe regele Hebronului, pe regele Iarmutului, pe regele Lachișului și pe regele Eglonului.24După ce au fost aduși acești regi înaintea lui Iosua, acesta i‑a chemat pe toți bărbații lui Israel și le‑a zis conducătorilor oamenilor de război, care merseseră cu el: „Apropiați‑vă și puneți‑vă picioarele pe gâturile acestor regi!“ Ei s‑au apropiat și și‑au pus picioarele pe gâturile lor.25Iosua le‑a zis: „Nu vă temeți și nu vă înspăimântați! Fiți tari și curajoși, fiindcă astfel va face DOMNUL tuturor dușmanilor voștri împotriva cărora veți lupta.“26Apoi Iosua i‑a lovit și i‑a omorât, după care i‑a spânzurat[4] de cinci copaci și i‑a lăsat atârnați acolo până seara. (Jos 8:29)27La apusul soarelui Iosua a poruncit să fie coborâți din copaci și să fie aruncați în peștera în care se ascunseseră. La gura peșterii au pus niște pietre mari care au rămas acolo până în ziua aceasta.28În acea zi, Iosua a cucerit Makkeda și a trecut‑o prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe ea și pe regele ei. A dat spre nimicire orice om care se afla în ea, nelăsând niciun supraviețuitor. I‑a făcut regelui din Makkeda la fel cum îi făcuse regelui din Ierihon.29Apoi, din Makkeda, Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul au pornit spre Libna și au început lupta împotriva Libnei.30DOMNUL a dat‑o și pe ea în mâna lui Israel, împreună cu regele ei. Israel a trecut cetatea și pe oamenii care erau în ea prin ascuțișul sabiei, nelăsând niciun supraviețuitor și i‑a făcut regelui ei la fel cum îi făcuse regelui Ierihonului.31Din Libna, Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul au pornit spre Lachiș. Ei și‑au așezat tabăra în apropierea lui și au început lupta împotriva lui.32DOMNUL a dat Lachișul în mâna lui Israel. El l‑a capturat în cea de‑a doua zi, trecând prin ascuțișul sabiei toți oamenii care erau în el, la fel cum făcuse în Libna.33Atunci Horam, regele Ghezerului, s‑a suit ca să ajute Lachișul, dar Iosua l‑a învins, pe el și poporul lui, fără să lase vreun supraviețuitor.34Din Lachiș, Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul au trecut la Eglon. Ei și‑au așezat tabăra lângă el și au pornit lupta împotriva lui.35L‑au capturat în aceeași zi și l‑au trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei. În aceeași zi, a dat spre nimicire pe orice om care era în el, la fel cum făcuse în Lachiș.36Din Eglon, Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul s‑au suit spre Hebron și au luptat împotriva lui.37L‑au capturat și l‑au trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe el, pe regele lui, toate satele dimprejurul lui și pe orice om care era în el. N‑a lăsat niciun supraviețuitor, așa cum făcuse în Eglon, și l‑a dat spre nimicire pe el și pe orice om care era în el.38Apoi Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul s‑au întors înspre Debir și au început lupta împotriva lui.39L‑au capturat și l‑au trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei, pe el, pe regele lui și toate satele dimprejurul lui, și au dat spre nimicire orice om care era în el. N‑a lăsat niciun supraviețuitor. I‑a făcut Debirului și regelui său așa cum i‑a făcut Hebronului și așa cum i‑a făcut Libnei și regelui ei.40Iosua a învins astfel întreaga țară: muntele, Neghevul[5], zona deluroasă[6] și poalele munților, și pe toți regii lor. N‑a lăsat niciun supraviețuitor și a dat spre nimicire orice avea suflare, așa cum poruncise DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel. (Jos 9:1)41Iosua i‑a lovit de la Kadeș-Barnea până la Gaza, în întreaga regiune Goșen[7] și până la Ghivon.42Iosua i‑a învins pe toți acești regi și a cucerit regatele[8] lor într‑o singură campanie, deoarece DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel, lupta pentru Israel.43Apoi Iosua împreună cu tot Israelul s‑au întors în tabăra de la Ghilgal.
