1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. 3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD. 4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel: 5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? 6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? 7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination. 8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit. 9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children' children will I plead. 10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing. 11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. 14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave ? why is he spoiled? 15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant. 16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head. 17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? 18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? 19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts. 20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot. 21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? 22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD. 23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; 24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. 25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. 26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, 27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. 28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah. 29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. 30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion. 31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee? 32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. 34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these. 35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. 36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. 37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

1 Cuvântul DOMNULUI mi‑a vorbit, zicând: 2 „Du‑te și vestește în auzul locuitorilor Ierusalimului astfel: «Așa vorbește DOMNUL: ‘Îmi amintesc de credincioșia tinereții tale, cum, mireasă fiind, Mă iubeai și Mă urmai prin pustie, pe un pământ nesemănat. 3 Israel era sfântul DOMNULUI, primul rod al recoltei Lui; toți cei ce‑l devorau se făceau vinovați și nenorocirea venea peste ei, zice DOMNUL.’»“ 4 Ascultați Cuvântul DOMNULUI, Casă a lui Iacov, toate clanurile Casei lui Israel! 5 Așa vorbește DOMNUL: „Ce nedreptate au găsit părinții voștri în Mine de s‑au depărtat de Mine? Ei s‑au dus după deșertăciuni și ei înșiși au devenit deșertăciuni. 6 Nu s‑au întrebat: «Unde este DOMNUL, Care ne‑a scos din țara Egiptului și ne‑a condus prin pustie, printr‑un pământ uscat și plin de gropi, printr‑un pământ al secetei și al umbrei morții, printr‑un pământ pe unde nimeni nu trece și unde nu locuiește niciun om?» 7 V‑am dus într‑o țară ca o livadă, ca să mâncați din rodul ei și din bunătățile ei, însă voi ați venit și Mi‑ați pângărit țara, Mi‑ați prefăcut moștenirea într‑o urâciune. 8 Preoții nu s‑au întrebat: «Unde este DOMNUL?» Cei ce mânuiesc Legea nu M‑au cunoscut; păstorii^[1] s‑au răzvrătit împotriva Mea. Profeții au profețit prin BAAL și s‑au dus după cei ce nu pot fi de niciun folos. 9 De aceea Mă voi certa din nou cu voi, zice DOMNUL, și Mă voi certa și cu copiii copiilor voștri. 10 Treceți în țărmurile Chitim^[2] și priviți! Trimiteți la Chedar^[3] și luați aminte; vedeți dacă acolo s‑a întâmplat așa ceva! 11 Și‑a schimbat vreun neam dumnezeii, măcar că ei nu sunt Dumnezeu? Poporul Meu însă și‑a schimbat Slava cu ceva care nu‑i este de niciun folos. 12 Mirați‑vă de aceasta, ceruri! Înfiorați‑vă, uimiți‑vă mult, zice DOMNUL, 13 căci poporul Meu a săvârșit două rele: M‑au părăsit pe Mine, Izvorul apelor vii, și și‑au săpat puțuri, puțuri sparte, care nu țin apa. 14 Este Israel un rob? Este el un fiu de rob din naștere? Atunci de ce a devenit pradă? 15 Leii răcnesc împotriva lui și își ridică glasurile. Ei îi pustiesc țara; cetățile lui sunt devastate și fără locuitori. 16 Chiar și cei din Nof^[4] și Tahpanhes ți‑au zdrobit creștetul capului.^[5] 17 Nu ți‑ai provocat tu singur lucrul acesta pentru că L‑ai părăsit pe DOMNUL, Dumnezeul tău, când El te conducea pe cale? 18 Și acum, de ce te duci în Egipt să bei apă din Șihor^[6]? De ce mergi în Asiria să bei apă din râu^[7]? 19 Răutatea ta te va pedepsi; necredincioșia ta te va mustra. Vei ști și vei vedea astfel cât de rău și de amar este pentru tine să‑L părăsești pe DOMNUL, Dumnezeul tău, și să nu ai nicio frică de Mine, zice Stăpânul, DOMNUL Oștirilor^[8]. 20 Deși, demult, ți‑am sfărâmat jugul și ți‑am smuls legăturile, totuși tu ai zis: «Nu voi mai sluji». Căci pe orice deal înalt și sub orice copac verde te‑ai întins ca o prostituată. 21 Eu te sădisem ca pe o vie aleasă, toată dintr‑o sămânță veritabilă. Cum de te‑ai prefăcut înaintea Mea într‑o ramură putredă de viță străină? 22 Chiar dacă te‑ai spăla cu sodă, chiar dacă te‑ai da cu multă leșie, nelegiuirea ta tot ar rămâne înaintea ochilor Mei, zice Stăpânul DOMN. 23 Cum poți spune: «Nu m‑am pângărit și nu am alergat după BAALI^[9]!»? Privește‑ți urma pașilor în vale și ia aminte la ce ai făcut. Ești ca o dromaderă iute, ale cărei căi sunt întortocheate, 24 ca o măgăriță sălbatică, obișnuită cu pustiul, care gâfâie în aprinderea poftei ei! Cine o va împiedica să‑și satisfacă pofta? Cei ce o doresc nu se obosesc căutând‑o, căci o găsesc la vremea împerecherii ei.^[10] 25 Oprește‑te până când nu ajungi desculță și cu gâtul uscat! Dar tu zici: «În zadar! Eu iubesc dumnezeii străini și vreau să merg după ei!» 26 Cum este dat de rușine un hoț când este prins, tot astfel este rușinată Casa lui Israel – poporul, regii și conducătorii lui, preoții și profeții lui. 27 Ei zic lemnului: «Tu ești tatăl nostru!» și pietrei: «Tu ne‑ai dat naștere!» Căci s‑au întors cu ceafa la Mine, și nu cu fața. Dar când sunt în nenorocire, ei zic: «Ridică‑Te și izbăvește‑ne!» 28 Unde sunt atunci dumnezeii pe care vi i‑ați făcut? Să se ridice ei deci, și să te izbăvească în vremea nenorocirii tale! Căci Iuda, ai tot atâția dumnezei, câte cetăți ai! 29 De ce vă certați cu Mine? Toți v‑ați răzvrătit împotriva Mea, zice DOMNUL. 30 Degeaba v‑am lovit copiii, căci tot n‑au luat aminte la disciplinare. Sabia voastră i‑a devorat pe profeții voștri ca un leu distrugător.“ 31 Voi, cei din generația aceasta, uitați‑vă la Cuvântul DOMNULUI: „Am fost Eu o pustie pentru Israel sau un pământ plin de întuneric^[11]? De ce spune poporul Meu: «Suntem liberi să rătăcim! Nu vom mai veni la Tine!» (1Sa 26:12) 32 Își uită o fecioară bijuteriile sau o mireasă eșarfele^[12]? Poporul Meu însă M‑a uitat de zile fără număr. 33 Ce bine știi să‑ți întocmești căile când cauți iubire! Astfel, până și pe femeile rele le înveți căile tale! 34 Chiar și pe marginile hainelor tale se găsește sângele săracilor nevinovați, pe care nu i‑ai prins dând vreo spargere. Dar în pofida acestor lucruri 35 tu zici: «Sunt nevinovat! Cu siguranță, mânia Lui s‑a întors de la mine!» Însă Eu te voi judeca pentru că zici: «Nu am păcătuit!» 36 De ce atâta grabă ca să‑ți schimbi calea? Vei fi făcut de rușine de către Egipt așa cum ai fost făcut de rușine de către Asiria. 37 Și de acolo vei ieși cu mâinile pe cap, căci DOMNUL i‑a lepădat pe cei în care te încrezi și nu vei reuși împreună cu ei.“
