1 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself: 2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: 3 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. 4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities. 12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. 19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. 24 And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. 25 But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. 26 For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. 28 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. 29 And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds. 30 And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: 31 And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. 32 Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.

1 Agrippa i‑a zis lui Pavel: – Ți se dă voie să vorbești despre tine! Atunci Pavel a întins mâna și a început să se apere astfel: 2 – Rege Agrippa, mă consider fericit că urmează să mă apăr astăzi înaintea ta, cu privire la toate lucrurile de care sunt acuzat de iudei, 3 mai ales pentru că tu ești cunoscător al tuturor obiceiurilor și controverselor iudeilor. De aceea, te rog fierbinte să mă asculți cu răbdare. 4 Toți iudeii cunosc felul în care mi‑am trăit viața încă din tinerețe – viață pe care mi‑am petrecut‑o de la început în mijlocul neamului meu și în Ierusalim. 5 Dacă doresc să mărturisească, ei mă cunosc de mult timp și știu că am trăit ca fariseu, după cea mai strictă partidă a religiei noastre. 6 Iar acum, stau aici ca să fiu judecat din cauza speranței în promisiunea făcută de Dumnezeu strămoșilor^[1] noștri, 7 promisiune pe care cele douăsprezece seminții ale noastre, slujindu‑I lui Dumnezeu cu seriozitate zi și noapte, speră s‑o primească. Pentru această speranță, rege, sunt acuzat eu de către iudei! 8 Ce, vi se pare de necrezut că Dumnezeu învie morții?! 9 Într-adevăr, eu însumi credeam că trebuie să fac multe lucruri împotriva Numelui lui Isus nazarineanul, 10 și așa am și făcut în Ierusalim: cu autoritatea primită de la conducătorii preoților i‑am aruncat în închisori pe mulți sfinți, iar când erau condamnați la moarte îmi dădeam și eu votul împotriva lor. 11 De asemenea, pedepsindu‑i adesea prin toate sinagogile, m‑am străduit să‑i fac să blasfemieze. Și fiindcă eram deosebit de furios pe ei, i‑am persecutat chiar și în cetățile străine! 12 Cu acestea în gând, m‑am dus în Damasc, având autoritate și putere deplină de la conducătorii preoților. 13 Pe la mijlocul zilei, rege, în timp ce eram pe drum, am văzut strălucind împrejurul meu – și împrejurul celor ce călătoreau împreună cu mine – o lumină din cer, a cărei strălucire o întrecea pe cea a soarelui. 14 Toți am căzut la pământ, iar eu am auzit un glas care‑mi zicea în limba ebraică: „Saul, Saul, de ce Mă persecuți? Îți este greu să lovești cu călcâiul în pinteni!^[2]“ (Ac 9:5) 15 Eu am întrebat: „Cine ești, Doamne^[3]?“ Domnul mi‑a răspuns: „Eu sunt Isus, Cel pe Care tu Îl persecuți! (Ac 9:5) 16 Dar ridică‑te și stai în picioare! Căci M‑am arătat ție ca să te numesc slujitor și martor atât al lucrurilor în care M‑ai văzut pe Mine, cât și al lucrurilor în care Mă voi arăta ție. 17 Te voi elibera^[4] de poporul tău și de neamurile la care te trimit 18 să le deschizi ochii ca să se întoarcă de la întuneric la lumină și de sub autoritatea lui Satan^[5] la Dumnezeu, astfel încât să primească, prin credința în Mine, iertare de păcate și moștenire^[6] alături de cei sfințiți.“ (Ac 5:3) 19 De aceea, rege Agrippa, n‑am fost neascultător față de viziunea cerească, 20 ci le‑am vestit – mai întâi celor din Damasc, apoi celor din Ierusalim și din întreaga regiune a Iudeei, iar apoi neamurilor – să se pocăiască și să se întoarcă la Dumnezeu, făcând fapte vrednice de pocăință. 21 Din cauza acestor lucruri m‑au prins iudeii în Templu și au încercat să mă omoare! 22 Însă până în ziua de azi am primit ajutor de la Dumnezeu și stau aici, depunând mărturie atât înaintea celor mici, cât și înaintea celor mari, fără să spun nimic în afară de ceea ce Profeții și Moise^[7] au zis că urmează să se întâmple, 23 și anume că El, Cristosul, va trebui să sufere și, prin faptul că va fi primul înviat dintre cei morți, va vesti lumină atât poporului Său, cât și neamurilor. 24 În timp ce Pavel se apăra astfel, Festus a zis cu glas tare: – Ți‑ai ieșit din minți, Pavel! Învățătura ta cea multă te face să dai în nebunie! 25 Însă Pavel a răspuns: – Nu mi‑am ieșit din minți, preaalesule Festus, ci rostesc cuvinte care țin de adevăr și de o judecată sănătoasă. 26 Deoarece regele cunoaște aceste lucruri, eu pot să‑i vorbesc cu îndrăzneală, întrucât sunt convins că nimic din acestea n‑a putut trece neobservat de el, deoarece nu s‑au întâmplat într‑un colț. 27 Crezi tu în Profeți, rege Agrippa? Știu că tu crezi! 28 Însă Agrippa i‑a zis lui Pavel: – În curând, mă vei convinge să mă fac creștin! 29 Pavel i‑a răspuns: – Fie în curând, fie mai târziu, mă rog lui Dumnezeu ca nu doar tu, ci toți cei ce mă ascultă astăzi să devină așa cum sunt eu, în afară de lanțurile acestea. 30 Regele, guvernatorul, Berenice și toți cei ce ședeau împreună cu ei s‑au ridicat 31 și, în timp ce plecau, își spuneau unii altora: „Omul acesta nu face nimic vrednic de moarte sau de lanțuri.“ 32 Agrippa i‑a zis lui Festus: – Omul acesta ar fi putut fi eliberat dacă n‑ar fi făcut apel la Cezar.
