1And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.2For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.3And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it : but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?4Notwithstanding the king' word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.5And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:6Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon,7And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.8So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.9And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.10And David' heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.11For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David' seer, saying,12Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things ; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.13So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days'pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.14And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.15So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.16And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.17And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father' house.18And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.19And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.20And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.21And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.22And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.23All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.24And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.25And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
1DOMNUL[1] S‑a aprins de mânie iarăși împotriva lui Israel și l‑a stârnit pe David împotriva lor, zicând: „Du‑te și numără poporul din Israel și Iuda.“ (1Ch 21:1)2Regele le‑a zis lui Ioab și conducătorilor oștirii care erau cu el: – Mergeți prin toate semințiile lui Israel, de la Dan până la Beer-Șeba[2], și numărați poporul ca să știu la cât se ridică numărul lui. (2Sa 3:10)3Dar Ioab i‑a zis regelui: – DOMNUL, Dumnezeul tău, să înmulțească poporul de o sută de ori mai mult și fie ca stăpânul meu, regele, să vadă cu ochii săi lucrul acesta! Dar de ce dorește stăpânul meu, regele, să facă acest lucru?4Însă porunca regelui dată lui Ioab și conducătorilor oștirii a rămas de neclintit. Prin urmare, Ioab și conducătorii oștirii au ieșit dinaintea regelui ca să numere poporul, pe Israel.5După ce au trecut Iordanul, și‑au așezat tabăra la Aroer, la sud[3] de cetatea care este în mijlocul văi Gad, înspre Iazer.6Apoi au ajuns în Ghilad și în teritoriul lui Tahtim-Hodși, apoi la Dan‑Iaan și prin împrejurimi până înspre Sidon.7Au ajuns până la fortăreața Tyrului și în toate cetățile hiviților și ale canaaniților, apoi s‑au îndreptat înspre Beer-Șeba, în partea de sud a lui Iuda.8Au străbătut astfel toată țara și, după nouă luni și douăzeci de zile, s‑au întors la Ierusalim.9Ioab i‑a dat regelui rezultatul[4] de la numărătoarea poporului: în Israel erau opt sute de mii de bărbați în stare să meargă la război, iar în Iuda – cinci sute de mii de bărbați.
Pedeapsa Domnului
10David s‑a simțit mustrat în inima lui după ce făcuse numărătoarea poporului. El I‑a zis DOMNULUI: „Am săvârșit un mare păcat prin ceea ce am făcut.[5] Însă acum DOAMNE, îndepărtează, Te rog, nelegiuirea robului Tău, căci m‑am purtat întru totul ca un nebun.“ (Ex 30:12)11În dimineața următoare, când David s‑a trezit, Cuvântul DOMNULUI i‑a vorbit profetului Gad, văzătorul lui David, zicând:12„Du‑te și spune‑i lui David: «Așa vorbește DOMNUL: îți pun înainte trei nenorociri. Alege una dintre ele și‑ți voi face întocmai.»“13Gad a venit la David și l‑a înștiințat, zicându‑i: – Ce alegi? Șapte ani de foamete în țară, trei luni în timpul cărora să fugi dinaintea vrăjmașilor tăi, și ei să te urmărească sau trei zile în timpul cărora molima să fie în țară? Acum gândește‑te și vezi ce trebuie să răspund Celui Ce m‑a trimis!14David i‑a zis lui Gad: – Sunt într‑o mare strâmtorare. Mai bine să cădem în mâna DOMNULUI, căci mila Lui este nemărginită; dar să nu cad în mâinile oamenilor!15DOMNUL a trimis molima în Israel, începând din acea dimineață și până la încheierea timpului hotărât. De la Dan și până la Beer-Șeba au murit din popor șaptezeci de mii de oameni.16În timp ce Îngerul avea mâna întinsă spre Ierusalim și‑l distrugea, DOMNULUI I‑a părut rău pentru acel dezastru și I‑a zis Îngerului Care distrugea poporul: „Destul! Retrage‑Ți mâna!“ Îngerul DOMNULUI era lângă aria iebusitului Aravna.17Văzându‑l pe Îngerul Care lovea poporul, David I‑a zis DOMNULUI: „Iată, eu am păcătuit! Eu am săvârșit nelegiuirea! Dar oile acestea, ce au făcut oare? Te rog, lasă mâna Ta să fie numai împotriva mea și împotriva familiei mele!“
David zidește un altar
18Gad a venit la David în acea zi și i‑a zis: – Suie‑te și ridică‑I DOMNULUI un altar pe aria iebusitului Aravna. (1Ch 21:18)19David s‑a suit acolo, după cuvântul pe care DOMNUL îl poruncise prin Gad.20Aravna s‑a uitat și l‑a văzut pe rege și pe slujitorii săi, îndreptându‑se spre el. El a ieșit din arie și s‑a plecat cu fața la pământ înaintea regelui.21Aravna a întrebat: – De ce a venit stăpânul meu, regele, la robul său? David a răspuns: – Ca să cumpăr de la tine aria pentru a zidi un altar DOMNULUI. Astfel, urgia care s‑a abătut asupra poporului va fi oprită.22Aravna i‑a zis lui David: – Să ia stăpânul meu, regele, și să ofere ca jertfă ceea ce crede că este bine.[6] Iată, boii vor fi pentru arderea‑de‑tot, iar uneltele de treierat și jugurile boilor vor fi pentru lemne.23O, rege, Aravna îi dă regelui totul. Apoi Aravna i‑a zis regelui: – Fie ca DOMNUL, Dumnezeul tău, să te primească!24Însă regele i‑a zis lui Aravna: – Nu, ci trebuie s‑o cumpăr de la tine, oferindu‑ți un preț. Nu voi aduce DOMNULUI, Dumnezeului meu, arderi‑de‑tot care să nu mă coste nimic. Astfel, David a cumpărat aria și boii cu cincizeci de șecheli de argint.[7]25David a zidit acolo un altar DOMNULUI și I‑a adus arderi‑de‑tot și jertfe de pace[8]. Atunci DOMNUL S‑a lăsat înduplecat cu privire la țară, iar urgia care era peste Israel a fost oprită. (2Sa 6:17)
