1And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.2And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so , that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.3And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.4Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!5And it was so , that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.6And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.7And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron.8For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.9And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.10But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.11And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.12And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David' counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.13And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.14And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.15And the king' servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.16And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.17And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.18And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.19Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.20Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.21And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.22And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.23And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.24And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.25And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:26But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.27The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.28See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.29Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.30And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.31And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.32And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount , where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:33Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:34But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father' servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.35And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king' house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.36Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok' son , and Jonathan Abiathar' son ; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.37So Hushai David' friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Oricine venea la rege cu vreo neînțelegere pe care acesta s‑o judece, Absalom îl chema la el și‑l întreba: „Din care cetate ești?“, iar acesta îi spunea: „Robul tău este dintr‑una din semințiile lui Israel.“3Atunci Absalom îi zicea: „Vezi, cererea ta este bună și dreaptă, însă nimeni din partea regelui nu te va asculta.“4Apoi Absalom spunea: „Dacă m‑ar pune pe mine judecător în țară, atunci oricine ar avea vreo neînțelegere sau vreo pricină de judecată, ar veni la mine, iar eu i‑aș face dreptate!“5Se mai întâmpla că oricine se apropia să se plece înaintea lui, el îi întindea mâna, îl îmbrățișa și‑i dădea sărutare.6Așa făcea Absalom cu toți cei din Israel care veneau la rege pentru judecată. Astfel, Absalom a câștigat inima bărbaților lui Israel.7După o perioadă de patru ani, Absalom i‑a zis regelui: – Dă‑mi voie, te rog, să merg la Hebron ca să împlinesc un jurământ pe care I l‑am făcut DOMNULUI,8căci, pe când se afla în Aram, la Gheșur, robul tău a făcut un jurământ, zicând: „Dacă DOMNUL mă va aduce înapoi la Ierusalim, voi sluji DOMNULUI!“9Regele i‑a răspuns: – Mergi în pace. Absalom s‑a ridicat și a plecat la Hebron.10Dar Absalom a trimis cercetași în toate semințiile lui Israel, spunând: „Atunci când veți auzi sunetul trâmbiței[1], să ziceți: «Absalom s‑a întronat la Hebron!»“ (2Sa 2:28)11Două sute de oameni din Ierusalim au mers cu Absalom, fiind invitații acestuia. În naivitatea lor, ei mergeau fără să știe nimic.12În timp ce aducea jertfele, Absalom a trimis în cetatea Ghilo după ghilonitul Ahitofel, sfetnicul lui David. Uneltirea căpăta putere și tot mai mult popor trecea de partea lui Absalom.
Fuga lui David
13Atunci a venit un mesager la David, zicând: – Inimile oamenilor lui Israel sunt de partea lui Absalom.14Atunci David le‑a zis tuturor slujitorilor săi care erau cu el în Ierusalim: – Ridicați‑vă! Să fugim, căci altfel nu vom avea nicio scăpare din fața lui Absalom. Grăbiți‑vă, să plecăm! Altfel, el se va grăbi, ne va ajunge, va arunca nenorocirea asupra noastră și va trece cetatea prin ascuțișul sabiei.15Slujitorii regelui i‑au zis acestuia: – Iată, slujitorii tăi sunt gata să facă tot ceea ce va alege stăpânul nostru, regele.16Astfel, regele a ieșit, fiind urmat de întreaga sa familie. A lăsat însă zece țiitoare ca să îngrijească de palat.17Regele a ieșit împreună cu toți cei care‑l urmau și s‑au oprit la cea din urmă casă.18Toți slujitorii săi au trecut pe lângă el. Toți cheretiții, toți peletiții[2] și toți cei șase sute de ghitiți, care veniseră în urma lui din Gat, au trecut înaintea regelui. (2Sa 8:18)19Regele i‑a zis atunci ghititului Itai: – Tu de ce vii cu noi? Întoarce‑te și rămâi cu regele Absalom, căci ești un străin și ai fost alungat din țara ta.20De ieri ai venit, și azi să te fac să rătăcești, mergând împreună cu noi? Eu merg acolo unde trebuie să merg! Întoarce‑te și i‑ai cu tine și pe frații tăi! Îndurarea și credincioșia să fie cu tine!21Itai i‑a răspuns regelui: – Viu este DOMNUL și viu este stăpânul meu, regele, că acolo unde se va afla stăpânul meu, regele, fie că va însemna moarte, fie viață, acolo se va afla și robul tău.22Atunci David i‑a zis lui Itai: – Bine, vino și treci înainte! Astfel, și ghititul Itai, împreună cu toți oamenii și toți copiii care erau cu el, au trecut înainte.23Toți oamenii acelui ținut plângeau cu voce tare, la trecerea întregului popor. Regele a trecut uedul[3] Chidron și tot poporul s‑a îndreptat spre drumul dinspre pustie.24Se afla acolo și Țadok, împreună cu toți leviții, ducând Chivotul Legământului cu Dumnezeu. Leviții au așezat Chivotul lui Dumnezeu jos, iar Abiatar a adus jertfe până când tot poporul a ieșit din cetate.25După aceea regele i‑a zis lui Țadok: „Du Chivotul lui Dumnezeu înapoi, în cetate. Dacă voi găsi bunăvoință înaintea[4] DOMNULUI, atunci El mă va aduce înapoi și mă va lăsa să revăd Chivotul și Locuința Lui.26Dacă însă va spune: «Nu Îmi ești plăcut!», atunci iată‑mă, El să facă cu mine ce este bine în ochii Lui!“27Regele i‑a mai zis preotului Țadok: „Oare nu ești tu un văzător? Întoarceți‑vă în pace în cetate, atât tu și fiul tău Ahimaaț, cât și Abiatar cu fiul său Ionatan.28Eu voi aștepta la vadurile pustiei până voi primi vești de la voi.“29Așadar, Țadok și Abiatar au dus Chivotul lui Dumnezeu înapoi, la Ierusalim, și au rămas acolo.30David urca Muntele Măslinilor, plângând, cu capul acoperit și desculț. Toți oamenii care erau cu el și‑au acoperit capetele și urcau și ei, plângând.31David a fost înștiințat: „Ahitofel este printre cei ce au conspirat împreună cu Absalom“. Atunci David a zis: „DOAMNE, Te rog, fă din sfatul lui Ahitofel o nebunie!“32Când a ajuns în vârf, în locul unde oamenii obișnuiesc să I se închine lui Dumnezeu, architul Hușai îl aștepta acolo cu tunica sfâșiată și cu țărână pe cap.33David i‑a zis: „Dacă vii cu mine, îmi vei fi o povară.34Dacă însă te vei întoarce în cetate și‑i vei spune lui Absalom: «Eu voi fi slujitorul tău, o, rege. Cândva am fost slujitorul tatălui tău, însă acum voi fi slujitorul tău!», atunci vei putea împiedica pentru mine sfatul lui Ahitofel.35Oare nu vor fi acolo, cu tine, preoții Țadok și Abiatar? Orice vei auzi vorbindu‑se în palatul regelui să le spui lor.36Se mai află acolo, cu ei, și fiii lor: Ahimaaț, fiul lui Țadok, și Ionatan, fiul lui Abiatar. Să‑mi trimiteți prin ei orice știre pe care o veți afla.“37Hușai, prietenul lui David, a intrat în Ierusalim chiar atunci când Absalom intra în cetate.
