1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal, 2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man. 3 I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy. 4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son' name, if thou canst tell? 5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. 6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar. 7 Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: 8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: 9 Lest I be full, and deny thee , and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain . 10 Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty. 11 There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother. 12 There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness. 13 There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up. 14 There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men. 15 The horseleach hath two daughters, crying , Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea , four things say not, It is enough: 16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. 17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. 18 There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: 19 The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. 20 Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness. 21 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear: 22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat; 23 For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress. 24 There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: 25 The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer; 26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks; 27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; 28 The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings'palaces. 29 There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going: 30 A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any; 31 A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up. 32 If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth. 33 Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.

VI. Aussprüche Agurs

1 (Dies sind) die Sprüche Agurs, des Sohnes Jakes, aus Massa. So lautet der Ausspruch des Mannes: »Ich habe mich abgemüht, o Gott, ich habe mich abgemüht, o Gott, und bin dahingeschwunden^[1]; 2 denn ich bin ein vernunftloses Geschöpf, kein Mensch, und besitze keinen Menschenverstand; (Ps 73:22) 3 auch Weisheit habe ich nicht gelernt, daß ich die Erkenntnis des heiligen (Gottes) gewonnen hätte. 4 Wer ist in den Himmel emporgestiegen und wieder herabgekommen? Wer hat den Wind in seine Fäuste gesammelt, wer die Wasser in ein Gewand^[2] gebunden? Wer hat alle Enden der Erde festgestellt? Wie heißt er, und wie heißt sein Sohn? Weißt du es etwa?« 5 Jedes Wort Gottes ist lautere Wahrheit; ein Schild ist er denen, die Zuflucht bei ihm suchen. 6 Füge nichts zu seinen Worten hinzu, damit er dich nicht zur Rechenschaft zieht und du als Lügner dastehst! 7 Um zweierlei bitte ich dich – versage es mir nicht, ehe ich sterbe –: 8 Falschheit und Lügenwort halte fern von mir! Armut und Reichtum gib mir nicht! Laß mich (aber) den mir zukommenden Teil von Nahrung verzehren, 9 damit ich nicht aus Übersättigung dich verleugne und sage: »Wer ist der HERR?«, aber auch nicht infolge der Armut zum Diebe werde und mich am Namen meines Gottes vergreife^[3]. 10 Verleumde einen Knecht^[4] nicht bei seinem Herrn, damit er dir nicht flucht und du es büßen mußt. 11 (Ein Greuel für den HERRN ist) ein Geschlecht, das seinem Vater flucht und seine Mutter nicht segnet, 12 ein Geschlecht, das sich selbst für rein hält und doch von seiner Unreinheit sich nicht gesäubert hat, 13 ein Geschlecht, das den Kopf wunder wie hoch trägt und auf andere mit stolz erhobenen Augen herabblickt, 14 ein Geschlecht, dessen Zähne Schwerter sind und dessen Gebiß aus Messern besteht, um die Elenden aus dem Lande wegzufressen und die Armen aus der Mitte der Menschen. 15 Aluka hat zwei Töchter: »Gib her! Gib her!« Drei gibt es, die nicht satt werden, und vier sagen niemals: »Genug!«, 16 nämlich das Totenreich und der unfruchtbare Mutterschoß, die Erde, die des Wassers nie satt wird, und das Feuer, das niemals sagt: »Genug!« 17 Ein Auge, das den Vater verspottet und die greise Mutter verachtet, das müssen die Raben am Bach aushacken und die jungen Geier fressen. 18 Drei Dinge sind es, die mir zu wunderbar erscheinen, und vier, die ich nicht begreife: 19 des Adlers Weg am Himmel, der Schlange Weg über den Felsen, des Schiffes Weg mitten auf dem Meer und des Mannes Weg bei^[5] einem Weibe. – 20 So ist das Verhalten eines ehebrecherischen Weibes: sie ißt^[6] und wischt sich den Mund ab und sagt: »Ich habe nichts Unrechtes getan.« 21 Unter drei Dingen erzittert die Erde, und unter vieren kann sie es nicht aushalten: 22 unter einem Sklaven, wenn er König wird, und unter einem ruchlosen^[7] Menschen, wenn er Brot in Fülle hat; 23 unter einer unleidlichen^[8] Frau, wenn sie zur Ehe kommt, und unter einer Magd, wenn sie ihre Herrin verdrängt^[9]. 24 Vier Tiere gehören zu den kleinsten auf Erden und sind doch unglaublich klug: 25 die Ameisen, ein schwaches Volk, aber sie bereiten sich im Sommer ihren Speisebedarf; 26 die Klippdachse, ein Volk ohne Kraft, aber sie legen ihre Wohnung in den Felsen an; (Ps 104:18) 27 die Heuschrecken, die keinen König haben, und doch zieht ihr ganzer Schwarm wohlgeordnet daher; 28 die Eidechsen, die du mit (bloßen) Händen fangen kannst und die sich doch in Königspalästen finden. 29 Drei sind es, die stattlich einherschreiten, und vier, die einen würdevollen Gang haben: 30 der Löwe, der Held unter den Tieren, der vor nichts kehrt macht; 31 (der Hahn, der wohlgemut unter den Hennen einherschreitet, und der Bock, der die Ziegenherde anführt) und der König an der Spitze seines Heerbannes. – 32 Magst du töricht gewesen sein, indem du dich über den andern erhobst, oder magst du mit Überlegung gehandelt haben: lege die Hand auf den Mund! 33 Denn der Druck auf die Milch^[10] bringt Butter hervor, und Druck auf die Nase bringt Blut hervor, und Druck auf den Zorn bringt Streit hervor.
