1And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.2And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.3And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?4Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.5And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so , that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;6Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.7And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.8And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.9And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.10Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Bethlehem.11And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.12And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.13And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.14And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.15And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.

1Es wurden aber die Ephraimiten aufgeboten; sie zogen nordwärts und ließen dem Jephtha sagen: »Warum bist du zum Krieg gegen die Ammoniter ausgezogen, ohne uns zur Teilnahme am Feldzuge aufzufordern? Nun wollen wir dir dein Haus über dem Kopf in Brand stecken!«2Jephtha erwiderte ihnen: »Ich und mein Volk haben einen schweren Streit mit den Ammonitern gehabt, und ich habe euch um Hilfe angerufen, aber ihr habt mir keinen Beistand gegen sie geleistet.3Als ich nun sah, daß du mir nicht zu Hilfe kommen wolltest, setzte ich mein Leben aufs Spiel und zog gegen die Ammoniter zu Felde, und der HERR gab sie in meine Gewalt. Warum zieht ihr also jetzt gegen mich heran, um Händel mit mir anzufangen?«4Darauf bot Jephtha alle Männer von Gilead auf und griff die Ephraimiten an, und diese wurden von den Gileaditern geschlagen; sie hatten nämlich die Behauptung ausgesprochen: »Flüchtige Ephraimiten seid ihr; Gilead liegt nämlich in der Mitte von Ephraim und Manasse.«5Die Gileaditer aber hatten die Jordanfurten nach Ephraim zu besetzt. Sooft nun flüchtige Ephraimiten baten: »Laßt mich hinüber!«, fragten die Männer von Gilead den Betreffenden, ob er ein Ephratiter[1] sei; antwortete er dann mit nein,6so forderte man ihn auf, das Wort »Schibboleth«[2] auszusprechen. Sagte er dann »Sibboleth«, weil ihm die richtige Aussprache unmöglich war, so ergriffen sie ihn und machten ihn an den Jordanfurten nieder. So kamen damals 42000 Ephraimiten ums Leben.7Jephtha aber war sechs Jahre lang Richter in Israel; dann starb Jephtha, der Gileaditer, und wurde in einer der Städte Gileads begraben.8Nach ihm war Ibzan aus Bethlehem Richter in Israel.9Er hatte dreißig Söhne, und dreißig Töchter verheiratete er nach auswärts, und dreißig Töchter[3] führte er seinen Söhnen von auswärts als Gattinnen zu. Nachdem er sieben Jahre lang als Richter in Israel gewaltet hatte,10starb Ibzan und wurde in Bethlehem begraben.11Nach ihm war Elon aus dem Stamme Sebulon Richter in Israel und zwar zehn Jahre lang.12Als Elon aus Sebulon dann starb, wurde er in Ajjalon im Lande Sebulon begraben.13Nach ihm war Abdon aus Pirathon, der Sohn Hillels, Richter in Israel.14Er hatte vierzig Söhne und dreißig Enkel, die auf siebzig Eselsfüllen ritten. Nachdem er acht Jahre lang Richter in Israel gewesen war,15starb Abdon aus Pirathon, der Sohn Hillels, und wurde zu Pirathon im Lande Ephraim am Amalekiterberge begraben.
