1The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,2Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch;3Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.4Thus shalt thou say unto him, The LORD saith thus; Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up, even this whole land.5And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the LORD: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

1(Dies ist) das Wort, das der Prophet Jeremia an Baruch, den Sohn Nerijas richtete, als dieser im vierten Regierungsjahre Jojakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda, die betreffenden Worte[1] so, wie Jeremia sie ihm vorsagte, in ein Buch niedergeschrieben hatte (vgl. Kap. 36); das Wort lautete:2»So hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, in bezug auf dich, Baruch, gesprochen:3›Du klagst: O wehe mir! Der HERR fügt noch Kummer zu meinem Schmerz hinzu! Müde bin ich von allem Seufzen und finde keine Ruhe!‹4Sage zu ihm: ›So hat der HERR gesprochen: Wisse wohl: was ich selbst gebaut habe, das breche ich wieder ab, und was ich gepflanzt habe, das reiße ich wieder aus [und zwar betrifft dies die ganze Erde];5und da willst du Großes für dich verlangen? Verlange es nicht! Denn bedenke wohl: ich verhänge Unglück über alles Fleisch[2]‹, – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN –; ›dir aber gewähre ich, mit dem Leben davonzukommen an allen Orten, wohin du dich begeben wirst!‹«
