1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, 2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient, 3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. 4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. 5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable. 6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying , Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand: 7 In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people. 8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. 9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. 10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him : for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. 11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him : for the reward of his hands shall be given him. 12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. 13 The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. 14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. 15 What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts. 16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: 17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts. 18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet , and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon, 19 The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers, 20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings, 21 The rings, and nose jewels, 22 The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins, 23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails. 24 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty. 25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war. 26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

Zusammenbruch des judäischen Staates zur Strafe für die Mißregierung

1 Denn wisset wohl: der Höchste, der HERR der Heerscharen, wird aus Jerusalem und (ganz) Juda so Stab wie Stütze hinwegnehmen, jegliche Stütze des Brotes und jegliche Stütze des Wassers: 2 die Helden^[1] und Kriegsleute, die Richter und Propheten, die Wahrsager und Ältesten, 3 die Hauptleute und hochangesehenen Männer und Ratsherren, die Meister in Künsten und die Zauberkundigen. 4 Und »ich will ihnen Knaben zu Oberen geben, und Buben sollen über sie herrschen«; 5 und die Leute werden sich gegenseitig vergewaltigen, einer den andern, ein jeder seinen Nächsten: der Knabe wird gegen den Alten und der Lump gegen den Ehrenwerten frech auftreten. 6 Wenn dann jemand seinen Bruder^[2] in seines Vaters Hause ungestüm nötigt (mit den Worten): »Du hast noch ein Obergewand^[3], du mußt unser Richter^[4] sein, und dieser Trümmerhaufe hier soll unter deiner Herrschaft stehen!«, 7 so wird jener an demselben Tage bestimmt erklären: »Nein, ich will nicht Wundarzt sein! Auch ist in meinem Hause weder Brot noch ein Obergewand: ihr könnt mich nicht zum Oberhaupt des Volkes machen!« 8 Denn Jerusalem stürzt zu Boden, und Juda kommt zu Fall, weil ihre Zunge^[5] und ihr ganzes Tun gegen den HERRN gerichtet sind, um seinen hehren Augen zu trotzen. 9 Der freche Ausdruck ihres Angesichts legt Zeugnis gegen sie ab, und von ihren Sünden reden sie ohne Hehl wie einst die Leute in Sodom. Wehe ihnen! Denn sich selbst schaffen sie Unheil. 10 Sagt vom Gerechten, daß er wohl daran sei; denn er wird den Lohn seiner Taten ernten. 11 Wehe dem Gottlosen: er ist übel daran! Denn was seine Hände verübt haben, wird ihm vergolten werden. 12 O über mein Volk! Seine Zwingherren sind Buben, und Weiber haben es beherrscht. O mein Volk! Deine Leiter sind Irreführer und haben den Weg ungangbar gemacht, den du gehen sollst.

Gott kündigt den Häuptern des Volkes das Gericht an

13 Der HERR tritt auf, um Anklage zu erheben, und steht da, um Völker^[6] zu richten. 14 Der HERR geht ins Gericht mit den Ältesten seines Volkes und dessen Oberen: »Ihr da, ihr habt den Weinberg abgeweidet! Das den Armen geraubte Gut ist in euren Häusern! 15 Wie kommt ihr dazu, mein Volk zu zertreten und das Antlitz der Unterdrückten erbarmungslos zu zermalmen?« – so lautet der Ausspruch Gottes, des HERRN der Heerscharen. 16 Weiter hat der HERR gesprochen: »Weil die Töchter Zions hoffärtig geworden sind und mit hochgerecktem Halse einhergehen und freche Blicke um sich werfen, immer tänzelnd einherschreiten und an ihren Füßen die Fußspangen klirren lassen, 17 so wird der Allherr den Scheitel der Töchter Zions kahl (eig. grindig) machen und der HERR ihre Scham entblößen. 18 An jenem Tage wird der Herr ihnen den ganzen Prunk abreißen: die Fußspangen, Stirnreife und Halbmonde, 19 die Ohrgehänge, Armketten und Schleier, 20 die Kopftücher, Schrittkettchen und Prachtgürtel, die Duftfläschchen und Amulette, 21 die Fingerringe und Nasenreife, 22 die Prunkkleider und Mäntel, die Umschlagetücher und Täschchen, 23 die Handspiegel und feinen Hemdchen, die Hüte und Überwürfe. 24 Alsdann wird statt des Balsamdufts Modergeruch eintreten und statt des Gürtels^[7] ein Strick, statt des Lockengekräusels eine Glatze und statt des weiten Prachtgewandes ein enger Kittel von Sackleinen, ein Brandmal^[8] statt der Schönheit! 25 Deine Mannen werden durchs Schwert fallen und deine Helden^[9] im Kriege, 26 und ihre Tore werden ächzen und trauern, und entvölkert^[10] wird sie auf dem Erdboden sitzen.
