1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. 2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. 3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days'journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. 4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. 5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. 9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words. 10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. 11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmasters hasted them , saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw. 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh' taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore? 15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants? 16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people. 17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD. 18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks. 19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case , after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task. 20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh: 21 And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. 22 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

1 Hierauf gingen Mose und Aaron hin und sagten zum Pharao: »So hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesprochen: ›Laß mein Volk ziehen, damit sie mir ein Fest in der Wüste feiern!‹« 2 Der Pharao aber antwortete: »Wer ist der HERR, daß ich seinen Befehlen gehorchen und Israel ziehen lassen müßte? Ich kenne (diesen) HERRN nicht und will auch Israel nicht ziehen lassen.« 3 Da entgegneten sie: »Der Gott der Hebräer ist uns erschienen; wir möchten nun drei Tagereisen weit in die Wüste ziehen und dem HERRN, unserm Gott, dort Schlachtopfer darbringen, damit er uns nicht mit der Pest oder mit dem Schwert heimsucht!« 4 Aber der König von Ägypten erwiderte ihnen: »Warum wollt ihr, Mose und Aaron, das Volk von seiner Arbeit abziehen? Geht an eure Frondienste!« 5 Dann fuhr der Pharao fort: »Es gibt schon genug Gesindel im Land; und da wollt ihr sie noch von ihren Frondiensten feiern lassen?!« 6 An demselben Tage erteilte dann der Pharao den Fronvögten und Aufsehern des Volkes den Befehl: 7 »Ihr sollt dem Volk nicht mehr wie bisher Stroh^[1] zur Anfertigung der Ziegel liefern! Sie sollen selbst hingehen und sich Stroh zusammensuchen! 8 Dabei sollt ihr ihnen aber dieselbe Zahl von Ziegeln, die sie bisher gefertigt haben, auferlegen, ohne etwas davon zu erlassen! Denn sie sind träge; darum schreien sie immerfort: ›Wir wollen hinziehen und unserm Gott Opfer darbringen!‹ 9 Die Arbeit soll den Leuten erschwert werden, damit sie daran zu schaffen haben und nicht auf Lügenreden achten!« 10 Da gingen die Fronvögte und Aufseher des Volkes hinaus und sagten zum Volk: »So hat der Pharao befohlen: ›Ich lasse euch hinfort kein Stroh mehr liefern: 11 geht selbst hin und holt euch Stroh, wo ihr es findet! Doch von eurer Arbeit wird euch nichts erlassen.‹« 12 Da zerstreute sich das Volk im ganzen Lande Ägypten, um Stoppeln zu sammeln zu Häckerling; 13 die Fronvögte aber drängten sie mit der Forderung: »Ihr müßt Tag für Tag die volle Arbeit leisten wie früher, als es noch Stroh gab.« 14 Und die israelitischen Aufseher, welche die Fronvögte des Pharaos über sie gesetzt hatten, erhielten Stockschläge, und man sagte zu ihnen: »Warum habt ihr weder gestern noch heute euren bestimmten Satz Ziegel fertiggestellt wie früher?« 15 Da gingen die israelitischen Aufseher hin und wehklagten beim Pharao mit den Worten: »Warum behandelst du deine Knechte so? 16 Stroh wird deinen Knechten nicht mehr geliefert, und doch heißt es: ›Schafft Ziegel!‹ Und nun werden deine Knechte sogar geschlagen, und die Schuld wird auf dein Volk geschoben!« 17 Er aber antwortete: »Träge seid ihr, träge! Darum sagt ihr: ›Wir möchten hinziehen, um dem HERRN zu opfern.‹ 18 Und nun marsch an die Arbeit! Stroh wird euch nicht geliefert, aber die festgesetzte Zahl von Ziegeln habt ihr zu liefern!« 19 So sahen sich denn die israelitischen Aufseher in eine üble Lage versetzt, nämlich (ihren Volksgenossen) sagen zu müssen: »Von den Ziegeln, die ihr Tag für Tag zu liefern habt, dürft ihr keinen Abzug machen!« 20 Als sie nun aus dem Palast des Pharaos herauskamen, stießen sie auf Mose und Aaron, die auf sie warteten. 21 Da sagten sie zu ihnen: »Der HERR möge es euch gedenken und euch dafür richten^[2], daß ihr uns beim Pharao und seinen Beamten ganz verhaßt gemacht und ihnen das Schwert in die Hand gegeben habt, uns umzubringen!« 22 Da wandte sich Mose wieder an den HERRN und sagte: »Herr! Warum läßt du diesem Volk solches Unheil widerfahren? Warum hast du mich hergesandt? 23 Denn seitdem ich zum Pharao gegangen bin, um in deinem Namen zu reden, hat er dies Volk erst recht mißhandelt, und du hast zur Rettung deines Volkes nichts getan!«
