1 And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men' sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man' money in his sack' mouth. 2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack' mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? 5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing. 6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words. 7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing: 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks'mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord' house silver or gold? 9 With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord' bondmen. 10 And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless. 11 Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack. 12 And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin' sack. 13 Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city. 14 And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph' house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground. 15 And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine? 16 And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord' servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found. 17 And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father. 18 Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord' ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother? 20 And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him. 21 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him. 22 And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die. 23 And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more. 24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food. 26 And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man' face, except our youngest brother be with us. 27 And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons : 28 And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since: 29 And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad' life; 31 It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us , that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave. 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. 33 Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren. 34 For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

Josef ängstigt seine Brüder

1 Und Josef befahl seinem Haushalter und sprach: Fülle den Männern ihre Säcke mit Getreide, so viel sie fortbringen, und lege jedem sein Geld oben in seinen Sack. 2 Und meinen silbernen Becher lege oben in des Jüngsten Sack mit dem Gelde für das Getreide. Der tat, wie ihm Josef gesagt hatte. 3 Am Morgen, als es licht ward, ließen sie die Männer ziehen mit ihren Eseln. 4 Als sie aber zur Stadt hinaus waren und noch nicht weit gekommen, sprach Josef zu seinem Haushalter: Auf, jage den Männern nach und wenn du sie ereilst, so sprich zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr Gutes mit Bösem vergolten? 5 Das ist doch der Becher, aus dem mein Herr trinkt und aus dem er wahrsagt! Ihr habt übel getan. 6 Und als er sie ereilte, redete er mit ihnen diese Worte. 7 Sie antworteten ihm: Warum redet mein Herr solche Worte? Es sei ferne von deinen Knechten, solches zu tun. 8 Siehe, das Geld, das wir fanden oben in unseren Säcken, haben wir wiedergebracht zu dir aus dem Lande Kanaan. Wie sollten wir da aus deines Herrn Hause Silber oder Gold gestohlen haben? (Ge 43:21) 9 Bei wem er gefunden wird unter deinen Knechten, der sei des Todes; dazu wollen auch wir meines Herrn Sklaven sein. 10 Er sprach: Ja, es sei, wie ihr geredet habt. Bei wem er gefunden wird, der sei mein Sklave, ihr aber sollt frei sein. 11 Und sie legten eilends ein jeder seinen Sack ab auf die Erde, und ein jeder tat seinen Sack auf. 12 Und er suchte und fing an beim Ältesten bis hin zum Jüngsten. Da fand sich der Becher in Benjamins Sack. 13 Da zerrissen sie ihre Kleider, und ein jeder belud seinen Esel, und sie zogen wieder in die Stadt. 14 Und Juda ging mit seinen Brüdern in Josefs Haus, denn er war noch dort. Und sie fielen vor ihm nieder auf die Erde. 15 Josef aber sprach zu ihnen: Wie habt ihr das tun können? Wusstet ihr nicht, dass ein solcher Mann, wie ich bin, wahrsagen kann? 16 Juda sprach: Was sollen wir meinem Herrn sagen oder wie sollen wir reden und womit können wir uns rechtfertigen? Gott hat die Missetat deiner Knechte gefunden. Siehe, wir und der, bei dem der Becher gefunden ist, sind meines Herrn Sklaven. (Ge 42:21) 17 Er aber sprach: Das sei ferne von mir, solches zu tun! Der, bei dem der Becher gefunden ist, soll mein Sklave sein; ihr aber zieht hinauf mit Frieden zu eurem Vater. 18 Da trat Juda zu ihm und sprach: Mein Herr, lass deinen Knecht ein Wort reden vor den Ohren meines Herrn, und dein Zorn entbrenne nicht über deinen Knecht, denn du bist wie der Pharao. 19 Mein Herr fragte seine Knechte und sprach: Habt ihr noch einen Vater oder Bruder? (Ge 42:7; Ge 42:13; Ge 43:7) 20 Da antworteten wir: Wir haben einen Vater, der ist alt, und einen jungen Knaben, in seinem Alter geboren, und sein Bruder ist tot, und er ist allein übrig geblieben von seiner Mutter, und sein Vater hat ihn lieb. 21 Da sprachst du zu deinen Knechten: Bringt ihn herab zu mir, ich will ihm Gnade erweisen. 22 Wir aber antworteten meinem Herrn: Der Knabe kann seinen Vater nicht verlassen; wenn er ihn verließe, würde der sterben. 23 Da sprachst du zu deinen Knechten: Wenn euer jüngster Bruder nicht mit euch herkommt, sollt ihr mein Angesicht nicht mehr sehen. (Ge 42:15; Ge 43:3) 24 Da zogen wir hinauf zu deinem Knecht, meinem Vater, und sagten ihm meines Herrn Rede. 25 Da sprach unser Vater: Zieht wieder hin und kauft uns ein wenig Getreide. 26 Wir aber sprachen: Wir können nicht hinabziehen; nur wenn unser jüngster Bruder mit uns ist, wollen wir hinabziehen; denn wir dürfen des Mannes Angesicht nicht sehen, wenn unser jüngster Bruder nicht mit uns ist. 27 Da sprach dein Knecht, mein Vater, zu uns: Ihr wisst, dass mir meine Frau zwei Söhne geboren hat; 28 der eine ist von mir gegangen, und ich habe gesagt: Er ist gewiss zerrissen. Und ich habe ihn seitdem nicht gesehen. (Ge 37:32) 29 Werdet ihr diesen auch von mir nehmen und widerfährt ihm ein Unfall, so werdet ihr meine grauen Haare mit Jammer hinunter in die Grube bringen. (Ge 42:38) 30 Nun, wenn ich heimkäme zu deinem Knecht, meinem Vater, und der Knabe wäre nicht mit uns, an dem er mit ganzer Seele hängt, 31 so wird’s geschehen, dass er stirbt, wenn er sieht, dass der Knabe nicht da ist. So würden wir, deine Knechte, die grauen Haare deines Knechtes, unseres Vaters, mit Herzeleid hinunter in die Grube bringen. 32 Denn ich, dein Knecht, bin Bürge geworden für den Knaben vor meinem Vater und sprach: Bringe ich ihn dir nicht wieder, so will ich mein Leben lang die Schuld tragen. (Ge 43:9) 33 Darum lass deinen Knecht hierbleiben an des Knaben statt als Sklave meines Herrn und den Knaben mit seinen Brüdern hinaufziehen. 34 Denn wie soll ich hinaufziehen zu meinem Vater, wenn der Knabe nicht mit mir ist? Ich könnte den Jammer nicht sehen, der über meinen Vater kommen würde.
