1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father' wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. 8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying. 12 And his brethren went to feed their father' flock in Shechem. 13 And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I . 14 And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? 16 And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks . 17 And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. 18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. 19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. 21 And Reuben heard it , and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him. 22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. 28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. 29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes. 30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go? 31 And they took Joseph' coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son' coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son' coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. 36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh', and captain of the guard.

Josefs Träume

1 Jakob aber wohnte im Lande, in dem sein Vater ein Fremdling gewesen war, im Lande Kanaan. 2 Und dies ist die Geschichte von Jakobs Geschlecht: Josef war siebzehn Jahre alt und hütete mit seinen Brüdern die Schafe; er war Gehilfe bei den Söhnen Bilhas und Silpas, den Frauen seines Vaters, und er hinterbrachte ihrem Vater ihre üble Nachrede. 3 Israel aber hatte Josef lieber als alle seine Söhne, weil er der Sohn seines Alters war, und machte ihm einen bunten Rock. 4 Als nun seine Brüder sahen, dass ihn ihr Vater lieber hatte als alle seine Brüder, wurden sie ihm feind und konnten ihm kein freundliches Wort sagen. 5 Und Josef hatte einen Traum und sagte seinen Brüdern davon; da wurden sie ihm noch mehr feind. 6 Denn er sprach zu ihnen: Hört doch, was mir geträumt hat. 7 Siehe, wir banden Garben auf dem Felde, und meine Garbe richtete sich auf und blieb stehen, aber eure Garben stellten sich ringsumher und neigten sich vor meiner Garbe. 8 Da sprachen seine Brüder zu ihm: Willst du unser König werden und über uns herrschen? Und sie wurden ihm noch mehr feind um seines Traumes und seiner Worte willen. 9 Und er hatte noch einen zweiten Traum, den erzählte er seinen Brüdern und sprach: Ich habe noch einen Traum gehabt; siehe, die Sonne und der Mond und elf Sterne neigten sich vor mir. 10 Und als er das seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern erzählte, schalt ihn sein Vater und sprach zu ihm: Was ist das für ein Traum, den du geträumt hast? Sollen denn ich und deine Mutter und deine Brüder kommen und vor dir niederfallen? 11 Und seine Brüder ereiferten sich über ihn. Aber sein Vater behielt diese Worte.

Josef wird nach Ägypten verkauft

12 Als nun seine Brüder hingegangen waren, um das Vieh ihres Vaters in Sichem zu weiden, (Ge 33:18) 13 sprach Israel zu Josef: Hüten nicht deine Brüder das Vieh in Sichem? Komm, ich will dich zu ihnen senden. Er aber sprach: Hier bin ich. 14 Und er sprach: Geh hin und sieh, ob’s gut steht um deine Brüder und um das Vieh, und sage mir dann, wie sich’s verhält. Und er sandte ihn aus dem Tal von Hebron, und er kam nach Sichem. (Ge 35:27) 15 Da fand ihn ein Mann, wie er umherirrte auf dem Felde; der fragte ihn und sprach: Was suchst du? 16 Er antwortete: Ich suche meine Brüder; sage mir doch, wo sie hüten. 17 Der Mann sprach: Sie sind von dannen gezogen; denn ich hörte, dass sie sagten: Lasst uns nach Dotan gehen. Da zog Josef seinen Brüdern nach und fand sie in Dotan. 18 Als sie ihn nun sahen von ferne, ehe er nahe zu ihnen kam, machten sie einen Anschlag, dass sie ihn töteten, 19 und sprachen untereinander: Seht, der Träumer kommt daher! 20 So kommt nun und lasst uns ihn töten und in eine Grube werfen und sagen, ein böses Tier habe ihn gefressen; so wird man sehen, was seine Träume sind. 21 Als das Ruben hörte, wollte er ihn aus ihren Händen erretten und sprach: Lasst uns ihn nicht töten! (Ge 42:22) 22 Und weiter sprach Ruben zu ihnen: Vergießt nicht Blut, sondern werft ihn in die Grube hier in der Wüste und legt die Hand nicht an ihn! Er wollte ihn aber aus ihrer Hand erretten und seinem Vater wiederbringen. 23 Als nun Josef zu seinen Brüdern kam, zogen sie ihm seinen Rock aus, den bunten Rock, den er anhatte, (Ge 3:1) 24 und nahmen ihn und warfen ihn in die Grube; aber die Grube war leer und kein Wasser darin. 25 Und sie setzten sich nieder, um zu essen. Indessen hoben sie ihre Augen auf und sahen eine Karawane von Ismaelitern kommen von Gilead mit ihren Kamelen; die trugen kostbares Harz, Balsam und Myrrhe und zogen hinab nach Ägypten. 26 Da sprach Juda zu seinen Brüdern: Was hilft’s uns, dass wir unsern Bruder töten und sein Blut verbergen? 27 Kommt, lasst uns ihn den Ismaelitern verkaufen, damit sich unsere Hände nicht an ihm vergreifen; denn er ist unser Bruder, unser Fleisch und Blut. Und sie gehorchten ihm. 28 Als aber die midianitischen Kaufleute vorüberkamen, zogen sie ihn heraus aus der Grube und verkauften ihn um zwanzig Silberstücke den Ismaelitern; die brachten ihn nach Ägypten. (Ge 25:2; Le 27:1) 29 Als nun Ruben wieder zur Grube kam und Josef nicht darin fand, zerriss er sein Kleid 30 und kam wieder zu seinen Brüdern und sprach: Der Knabe ist nicht da! Wo soll ich hin? 31 Da nahmen sie Josefs Rock und schlachteten einen Ziegenbock und tauchten den Rock ins Blut 32 und schickten den bunten Rock hin und ließen ihn ihrem Vater bringen und sagen: Diesen haben wir gefunden; sieh, ob’s deines Sohnes Rock sei oder nicht. 33 Er erkannte ihn aber und sprach: Es ist meines Sohnes Rock; ein böses Tier hat ihn gefressen, zerrissen, zerrissen ist Josef! (Ge 20:1) 34 Und Jakob zerriss seine Kleider und legte ein härenes Tuch um seine Lenden und trug Leid um seinen Sohn lange Zeit. 35 Und alle seine Söhne und Töchter kamen zu ihm, ihn zu trösten; aber er wollte sich nicht trösten lassen und sprach: Ich werde mit Leid zu meinem Sohn in die Grube fahren. Und sein Vater beweinte ihn. 36 Aber die Midianiter verkauften ihn in Ägypten an Potifar, des Pharao Kämmerer und Obersten der Leibwache.
