1 The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. 2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces. 3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast. 4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying , Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. 6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace. 7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers. 8 Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks. 9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain. 10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD. 11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls; 12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. 14 Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD. 15 Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her. 16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land. 17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. 18 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve. 21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee. 22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. 23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD. 25 The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. 26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left. 27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation. 28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple. 29 Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. 30 Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD. 31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. 32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him. 33 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. 34 Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. 35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men . 36 A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed. 37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. 38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols. 39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there , and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. 41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. 43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me? 45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. 46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.

Der Untergang Babyloniens ist besiegelt

1 Die folgende Botschaft ließ der HERR durch den Propheten Jeremia verkünden. Sie war an Babylon und das ganze Reich der Babylonier gerichtet: 2 »Sagt es den Völkern, verkündet es überall! Stellt Feldzeichen auf und haltet die Neuigkeit nicht zurück! Ruft: ›Die Stadt Babylon ist erobert worden! Ihr Götze Bel^[1] ist vernichtet, Marduk liegt zerschmettert am Boden. Ja, Babylons Götter, die sie schützen sollten, sind ein Bild der Schande geworden!‹ 3 Aus dem Norden zieht ein Volk heran zum Angriff gegen Babylonien; das ganze Land wird es verwüsten. Menschen und Tiere ergreifen die Flucht, bis keiner mehr dort lebt. 4 Ich, der HERR, sage: Wenn diese Zeit gekommen ist, kehren die Israeliten und die Judäer gemeinsam aus der Verbannung zurück. Sie weinen und suchen meine Nähe, die Nähe ihres Gottes. 5 Sie fragen: ›Welcher Weg führt zum Berg Zion?‹, und gehen in diese Richtung weiter. ›Kommt‹, fordern sie einander auf, ›wir wollen wieder dem HERRN gehören! Wir schließen mit ihm einen ewigen Bund, den wir nie mehr vergessen werden!‹ 6 Mein Volk war wie eine Herde, die sich verlaufen hat. Seine Hirten führten es auf einen falschen Weg und ließen es in den Bergen umherirren. So zog es über Berge und Hügel und vergaß, wohin es gehört. 7 Wer immer diese Herde fand, griff sie an und schlachtete sie ab. Die Feinde Israels sagten: ›Wir begehen kein Unrecht, denn schließlich haben sie gegen den HERRN gesündigt, den Gott, bei dem sie ganz sicher Weide finden und dem schon ihre Vorfahren vertrauten!‹«

Flieht aus Babylon!

8 »Ihr Israeliten, flieht aus Babylon und verlasst so schnell wie möglich das Land! Geht den anderen Völkern voran wie Leittiere den Schafen! 9 Denn ihr werdet sehen: Ich sorge dafür, dass mächtige Völker aus dem Norden ein Bündnis schließen und sich zum Angriff gegen Babylon rüsten. Dann werden sie kommen und die Stadt erobern. Ihre Soldaten sind treffsichere Schützen, die ihr Ziel niemals verfehlen. 10 Sie werden ganz Babylonien plündern, keiner von ihnen kehrt mit leeren Händen zurück. Darauf gebe ich, der HERR, mein Wort. 11 Jetzt triumphiert ihr noch und jubelt, ihr Babylonier, weil ihr mein Land ausgeraubt habt! Ihr seid ausgelassen und springt vor Freude umher wie Kälber auf der Weide^[2], ihr wiehert wie übermütige Hengste! 12 Doch euer Heimatland, in dem ihr geboren seid, wird nun selbst unterworfen und von allen verachtet. Es soll ein unbedeutender Fleck Erde sein, eine dürre und trostlose Wüste. 13 Mein Zorn wird Babylon treffen und es zu einem einzigen Trümmerhaufen machen, in dem niemand mehr wohnt. Wer vorüberzieht und die Ruinen sieht, wird entsetzt sein und verächtlich über sie lachen. 14 Ihr Bogenschützen, stellt euch rings um die Stadt zum Angriff auf und schießt! Spart nicht mit Pfeilen! Denn Babylon hat gegen mich, den HERRN, gesündigt. 15 Umzingelt die Stadt und stimmt das Kriegsgeschrei an! – Da, sie ergibt sich! Ihre Türme stürzen ein, die Mauern reißt man nieder! Ich, der HERR, strafe sie für all ihre Bosheit. Rächt auch ihr euch an Babylon! Zahlt ihm das heim, was es euch angetan hat! 16 Lasst niemanden am Leben, der die Saat ausstreuen oder die Ernte einbringen könnte! Alle Ausländer, die in Babylon wohnten, werden vor dem Schwert des Feindes fliehen und in die Heimat zu ihren Landsleuten zurückkehren. 17 Israel ist wie eine Herde, die von Löwen auseinandergetrieben wurde. Zuerst ist der König von Assyrien über sie hergefallen, und dann hat König Nebukadnezar von Babylonien ihre Knochen abgenagt. 18 Deswegen sage ich, der HERR, der allmächtige Gott Israels: Ich bestrafe den König von Babylonien und sein ganzes Land so gewiss, wie ich auch den König von Assyrien zur Rechenschaft gezogen habe. 19 Aber mein Volk, meine Herde, bringe ich zurück zu ihrem Weideplatz, dann kann sie sich wieder beim Berg Karmel und im Hochland von Baschan ausbreiten; auch im Bergland von Ephraim und in Gilead findet sie genug zu essen. 20 Ich, der HERR, verspreche euch: Wer zu dieser Zeit nach Israels Schuld sucht, wird sie nicht finden. Man wird den Bewohnern Judas keine einzige Sünde vorhalten können. Denn wen ich von meinem Volk übrig lasse, dem werde ich vergeben.«

Gott übt Rache für seinen zerstörten Tempel

21 »Ich, der HERR, sage euch: Tut, was ich euch befehle! Greift das Land Meratajim an, zieht gegen die Bewohner von Pekod in den Kampf!^[3] Vernichtet sie, zerstört alles ohne Erbarmen! 22 Hört das Kriegsgeschrei, Babyloniens Untergang naht! 23 Alle Völker hat es niedergeschlagen wie ein Hammer, doch nun liegt es selbst zerschmettert am Boden. Bei diesem Anblick werden die Völker von Entsetzen gepackt. 24 Ich habe dir eine Falle gestellt, Babylonien, und du bist hineingelaufen, ehe du wusstest, was geschah! Man hat dich eingeholt und überwältigt, denn du hast gegen mich, den HERRN, Krieg geführt. 25 Ich öffne meine Waffenkammer und hole die Waffen heraus, mit denen ich dich in meinem Zorn angreifen werde. Ja, für mich, den allmächtigen HERRN und Gott, gibt es in diesem Land viel zu tun! 26 Nehmt es von allen Seiten ein, brecht seine Kornspeicher auf und schüttet die Beute auf einen Haufen! Dann vernichtet alles und zerstört das ganze Land – lasst nichts mehr übrig! 27 Stecht alle seine Soldaten nieder, schlachtet sie ab wie Vieh! Wehe ihnen! Denn nun ist der Tag gekommen, an dem ihre Strafe sie trifft. 28 Hört, was die Flüchtlinge aus Babylonien erzählen! In Jerusalem, der Stadt auf dem Berg Zion, berichten sie, wie der HERR, unser Gott, sich an den Feinden gerächt hat: Er hat sie gestraft, weil sie seinen Tempel zerstört haben. 29 Ruft sämtliche Bogenschützen zum Kampf gegen Babylon herbei! Belagert die Stadt und lasst keinen entkommen! Vergeltet ihr alles Unrecht! Zahlt ihr heim, was sie euch angetan hat. Denn Babylon hat sich voller Stolz gegen mich, den heiligen Gott Israels, aufgelehnt. 30 Wenn es so weit ist, kommen die jungen Männer in den Straßen um, und alle Soldaten fallen noch am selben Tag im Kampf. Darauf gebe ich, der HERR, mein Wort. 31 Pass auf, denn ich, der allmächtige HERR und Gott, greife dich an, du stolze Stadt! Deine Strafe lässt nicht länger auf sich warten. 32 Du wirst stürzen, und niemand richtet dich wieder auf. Ich stecke dich und deine Nachbarstädte in Brand, das Feuer wird alles ringsum verzehren.«

Der Herr erlöst sein Volk

33 »So spricht der HERR, der allmächtige Gott: Noch werden die Israeliten und auch die Judäer unterdrückt. Ihre Feinde halten sie gefangen und lassen sie nicht in ihr Land zurückkehren. 34 Doch sie haben einen starken Erlöser, denn ich selbst, der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, verhelfe ihnen zu ihrem Recht. Auf der ganzen Welt sorge ich für Ruhe und Frieden, aber die Bewohner von Babylonien stürze ich in Angst und Schrecken. 35 Ich, der HERR, sage: Tod den Babyloniern und der Stadt Babylon mit ihren führenden Männern und ihren klugen Beratern! 36 Tod ihren Wahrsagern – sie werden als dumme Schwätzer entlarvt! Tod ihren Soldaten – die Angst soll sie packen! 37 Tod den Pferden und Streitwagen und allen Söldnern, die Babylonien unterstützt haben – sie werden sich nicht mehr wehren können! Die Schätze Babyloniens gebe ich der Plünderung preis. 38 Alle Gewässer des Landes sollen austrocknen! Denn Babylonien ist ein Land voll abscheulicher Götzenstatuen, die seinen Bewohnern den Verstand geraubt haben. 39 Wilde Wüstentiere werden in den Trümmern hausen, Schakale und Strauße streifen dort umher. Ja, Babylonien wird nie mehr bewohnt sein, für alle Zeiten bleibt es unbesiedelt. 40 Es soll zerstört werden wie damals Sodom und Gomorra mit ihren Nachbarstädten. Kein Mensch wird mehr dort wohnen, niemand sich dort auch nur aufhalten. Darauf gebe ich, der HERR, mein Wort.«

Der Feind aus dem Norden

41 »Seht, von Norden zieht ein Volk heran, eine mächtige Nation macht sich auf den Weg vom Ende der Erde. Viele Königreiche wollen gegen Babylonien Krieg führen. 42 Mit Schwertern und Bogen sind sie bewaffnet, sie sind grausam und kennen kein Erbarmen. Wenn sie auf ihren Pferden heranstürmen, klingt es wie das Tosen des Meeres. Sie haben sich zum Kampf gerüstet gegen dich, du Stadt Babylon! 43 Dein König hört die Schreckensmeldung, ihn hat aller Mut verlassen. Er zittert vor Angst wie eine Frau in den Wehen. 44 Ja, ich will die Babylonier aus ihrem Land vertreiben wie ein Löwe, der aus dem Dickicht am Jordan hervorbricht und ins fruchtbare Weideland einfällt. Dann wird einer, den ich selbst erwählt habe, über Babylonien regieren. Wer ist mir gleich und kann mich zur Rechenschaft ziehen? Welcher Herrscher ist imstande, sich mir zu widersetzen? 45 So hört nun, welchen Beschluss ich, der HERR, über Babylon gefällt habe und was ich mit den Einwohnern von Babylonien vorhabe: Man wird sie alle, auch die Jüngsten unter ihnen, wie hilflose Schafe forttreiben. Ja, das ganze Land wird entsetzt sein, wenn dies geschieht. 46 Babyloniens Sturz lässt die Erde erbeben, selbst die anderen Völker hören noch die lauten Hilfeschreie.«
