1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. 7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. 12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. 13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. 15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. 19 There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings. 20 And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? 21 Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind? 22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. 24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one. 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? 35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; 36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? 37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. 38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. 39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode. 41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. 42 And many believed on him there.

Bilden om fåren och den gode herden

1 Jesus fortsatte: ”Jag försäkrar er, att den som inte går in genom grinden till fårfållan utan istället tar sig in en annan väg, han är en tjuv och en brottsling. 2 Herden går in genom grinden. 3 Grindvakten öppnar grinden för honom, och fåren lyssnar till hans röst. Han vet vad varje får heter, och han ropar på dem och leder dem ut. 4 När han har släppt ut fåren går han framför dem, och de följer honom för de känner igen hans röst. 5 De följer aldrig en främling, utan springer bort från honom, eftersom de inte känner igen hans röst.” 6 De som hörde Jesus berätta den här bilden förstod inte vad han menade, 7 och därför förklarade han den för dem. Han sa: ”Jag försäkrar er, att jag är grinden in till fåren. 8 Alla som har kommit före mig är tjuvar och brottslingar, men fåren lyssnade inte till dem. 9 Jag är grinden. Den som går in genom mig ska bli räddad. Han ska bli ett av mina får och kan gå in och ut och hitta bete. 10 Tjuven kommer bara för att stjäla, slakta och döda. Men jag har kommit för att ge liv, och liv i överflöd. 11 Jag är också den gode herden. Den gode herden ger sitt liv för fåren. 12 Den som är anställd springer sin väg när han ser vargen komma. Han överger fåren, eftersom han inte är deras herde och fåren inte är hans. Och så angriper vargen fåren och skingrar flocken. 13 Den anställde har ingen omsorg om fåren. 14 Jag är den gode herden, och jag känner mina får, och de känner mig 15 på samma sätt som min Far i himlen känner mig och jag känner honom. Jag ger mitt liv för fåren. 16 Jag har också andra får, som inte hör till den här fållan. Också dem måste jag leda, och de ska lyssna till min röst. Så ska det bli en enda fårhjord och en herde. 17 Min Far i himlen älskar mig, därför att jag ger mitt liv för att sedan ta det tillbaka. 18 Ingen kan ta mitt liv ifrån mig, utan jag ger det frivilligt. Jag har rätt att ge mitt liv när jag vill, och jag har makt att ta det tillbaka. Det är det uppdrag jag har fått av min Far i himlen.” 19 När han sa detta började folket än en gång diskutera med varandra. 20 Många sa: ”Han är besatt av en ond ande och helt galen. Vad tjänar det till att lyssna på honom?” 21 Men andra sa: ”Nej, så talar inte den som är besatt av en ond ande. Kan en ond ande verkligen bota dem som är blinda?”

De judiska ledarna vägrar att tro på Jesus

22 Nu inföll tempelinvigningsfesten^[1] i Jerusalem. Det var vinter, 23 och Jesus gick omkring i den del av templet som kallas Salomos pelarhall. 24 Då omringade de judiska ledarna honom och frågade: ”Hur länge till ska du hålla oss i spänning? Om du är Messias, den utlovade kungen, så säg det öppet.” 25 Jesus svarade dem: ”Jag har redan talat om det för er, men ni vill inte tro det. De under min Far har sänt mig att göra bevisar vem jag är. 26 Men ni tror mig inte, eftersom ni inte hör till min fårhjord. 27 Mina får lyssnar till min röst, och jag känner dem, och de följer mig. 28 Jag ger dem evigt liv, och de ska aldrig någonsin gå förlorade. Ingen ska ta dem ifrån mig. 29 Min Far i himlen har gett dem till mig, och han har större makt än någon annan, därför kan ingen ta dem ifrån mig. 30 Jag och min Far är ett.” 31 Då tog de judiska ledarna än en gång upp stenar för att kasta på honom. 32 Men Jesus sa till dem: ”Ni har sett många under, som min Far i himlen har sagt åt mig att göra. För vilket av dessa under tänker ni stena mig?” 33 De svarade: ”Det är inte för något under vi vill stena dig, utan för att du hädar. Du, som är en vanlig människa, säger att du är Gud.” 34 Då sa Jesus: ”Står det inte i er egen lag^[2] att Gud sa: ’Jag säger att ni är gudar’? 35 Skriften^[3], som inte kan ändras, kallar de människor som fick ta emot Guds budskap för gudar. 36 Varför kallar ni det då för hädelse när jag säger: ’Jag är Guds Son’. Är jag inte den som min Far har sänt till världen med en särskild uppgift? 37 Om jag inte gör de under som min Far vill att jag ska göra, då behöver ni inte tro på mig. 38 Men om jag gör under, så tro åtminstone på dem, även om ni inte kan tro på mig. Då ska ni snart bli övertygade om att min Far är i mig och att jag är i honom.” 39 De försökte då gripa honom igen, men han lyckades komma undan. 40 Sedan gick Jesus än en gång iväg till den plats på andra sidan Jordan där Johannes döparen först hade döpt, och han stannade där ett tag. 41 Det var många människor som kom till honom. Och de sa till varandra: ”Johannes gjorde inga under, men allt han sa om Jesus var sant.” 42 Och många började där tro att Jesus var sänd av Gud.
