1Nach diesem Gebet verließ Jesus mit seinen Jüngern die Stadt und überquerte den Bach Kidron. Auf der anderen Seite lag ein Garten. Dorthin ging Jesus mit seinen Jüngern. (Mt 26,47; Mk 14,43; Lk 22,47)2Judas, der Verräter, kannte diese Stelle, denn Jesus hatte sich oft mit seinen Jüngern dort aufgehalten.3Nun erschien Judas mit einem Trupp römischer Soldaten sowie einigen Männern der Tempelwache, die ihm die obersten Priester und die Pharisäer mitgegeben hatten. Sie trugen Fackeln und Laternen und waren bewaffnet.4Jesus wusste, was ihm jetzt bevorstand. Er ging aus dem Garten zu ihnen hinaus und fragte: »Wen sucht ihr?«5»Jesus aus Nazareth«, war die Antwort. »Ich bin es!«, erklärte Jesus. Judas, sein Verräter, stand bei den Soldaten.6Als Jesus klar und offen sagte: »Ich bin es«, wichen die Bewaffneten erschrocken zurück und fielen zu Boden.7Jesus fragte sie noch einmal: »Wen sucht ihr?« »Jesus aus Nazareth!«, antworteten sie wieder.8»Ich habe euch doch schon gesagt, dass ich es bin«, entgegnete Jesus. »Wenn ihr also nur mich sucht, dann lasst die anderen hier gehen!«9Damit sollte sich erfüllen, was Jesus früher gesagt hatte: »Ich habe keinen von denen verloren, die du mir anvertraut hast.«[1] (Joh 6,39; Joh 17,12)10Simon Petrus hatte ein Schwert dabei. Plötzlich zog er es, schlug damit auf Malchus, den Diener des Hohenpriesters, ein und hieb ihm das rechte Ohr ab.11Aber Jesus befahl Petrus: »Steck dein Schwert weg! Soll ich etwa den bitteren Kelch nicht trinken, den mir mein Vater gegeben hat?«12Die römischen Soldaten, ihr Offizier und die Männer der Tempelwache nahmen Jesus fest und fesselten ihn.13Dann brachten sie ihn zunächst zu Hannas. Hannas war der Schwiegervater von Kaiphas, der in jenem Jahr Hoherpriester war.14Kaiphas war es gewesen, der früher den führenden Männern der Juden geraten hatte: »Es ist für euch alle besser, wenn dieser eine Mann für das ganze Volk stirbt!«[2] (Joh 11,50)
Petrus behauptet, Jesus nicht zu kennen
15Simon Petrus und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus, als er abgeführt wurde. Weil dieser andere Jünger mit dem Hohenpriester bekannt war, ließ man ihn mit Jesus bis in den Innenhof des hohepriesterlichen Palastes gehen. (Mt 26,69; Mk 14,66; Lk 22,55)16Petrus blieb draußen vor dem Tor stehen. Da kam der andere Jünger, der Bekannte des Hohenpriesters, wieder zurück, redete mit der Pförtnerin und verschaffte Petrus Zutritt.17Die Pförtnerin fragte Petrus: »Gehörst du nicht auch zu den Jüngern dieses Mannes?« »Nein, ich nicht!«, antwortete er.18Die Männer der Tempelwache und die Diener des Hohenpriesters hatten ein Kohlenfeuer angezündet. Sie standen um das Feuer herum und wärmten sich, denn es war kalt. Petrus ging zu ihnen, um sich auch zu wärmen.
Das Verhör vor dem Hohenpriester
19Drinnen im Palast begann das Verhör. Der Hohepriester Hannas[3] fragte Jesus nach seinen Jüngern und nach seiner Lehre. (Mt 26,59; Mk 14,55; Lk 22,66; Apg 4,6)20Jesus antwortete: »Ich habe in aller Öffentlichkeit zu den Menschen gesprochen. Niemals habe ich etwas im Geheimen gelehrt, sondern immer in den Synagogen und im Tempel, wo es jeder hören konnte.21Weshalb fragst du mich also? Frag doch die Leute, die mich gehört haben! Sie wissen, was ich gesagt habe.«22Da schlug ihm einer von den Wächtern, die neben ihm standen, ins Gesicht und rief: »Was fällt dir ein, so mit dem Hohenpriester zu reden?«23Jesus erwiderte: »Wenn ich etwas Falsches gesagt habe, dann weise es mir nach! War es aber richtig, weshalb schlägst du mich dann?«24Da ließ Hannas Jesus in Fesseln zum Hohenpriester Kaiphas bringen.
Petrus verleugnet Jesus noch einmal
25Simon Petrus stand noch immer am Feuer und wärmte sich. Da fragte man ihn: »Bist du nicht auch einer von seinen Jüngern?« »Nein, ich bin es nicht«, leugnete er. (Mt 26,71; Mk 14,69; Lk 22,58)26Aber ein Diener des Hohenpriesters, ein Verwandter des Mannes, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte, meinte: »Ich habe dich doch selbst im Garten bei ihm gesehen!«27Wieder stritt Petrus ab, Jesus zu kennen. Und im selben Augenblick krähte ein Hahn.
Jesus wird von Pilatus verhört
28In den frühen Morgenstunden wurde Jesus vom Haus des Hohenpriesters Kaiphas zum Palast des Statthalters gebracht. Die Juden selbst betraten dieses Gebäude nicht, denn sie wollten nicht unrein werden. Dann hätten sie nicht das Passahmahl essen dürfen. (Mt 27,2; Mt 27,11; Mk 15,1; Lk 23,1)29Deshalb ging Pilatus zu ihnen hinaus und fragte: »Welche Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Mann? Was hat er getan?«30Sie antworteten: »Wenn er kein Verbrecher wäre, hätten wir ihn nicht zu dir gebracht.«31»Dann nehmt ihn mit und verurteilt ihn nach eurem Gesetz!«, entgegnete Pilatus. »Aber wir dürfen doch niemanden hinrichten«, wandten sie ein.32So sollten sich die Worte von Jesus erfüllen, mit denen er vorausgesagt hatte, wie er sterben würde.33Pilatus kam nun in den Gerichtssaal zurück, ließ Jesus vorführen und fragte ihn: »Bist du der König der Juden?«34Jesus entgegnete: »Bist du selbst auf die Frage gekommen oder haben dir das andere über mich gesagt?«35»Bin ich etwa ein Jude?«, fragte Pilatus. »Die führenden Männer deines eigenen Volkes und die obersten Priester haben dich hergebracht, damit ich über dich urteile. Was also hast du getan?«36Jesus antwortete: »Mein Königreich gehört nicht zu dieser Welt. Wäre ich ein weltlicher Herrscher, dann hätten meine Leute für mich gekämpft, damit ich nicht in die Hände der Juden falle. Aber mein Reich ist von ganz anderer Art.«37Da fragte ihn Pilatus: »Dann bist du also doch ein König?« Jesus antwortete: »Ja, du hast recht. Ich bin ein König. Und dazu bin ich Mensch geworden und in diese Welt gekommen, um ihr die Wahrheit zu bezeugen. Wer sich von der Wahrheit bestimmen lässt, der hört auf mich.«38»Wahrheit? Was ist das überhaupt?«, erwiderte Pilatus. Dann ging er wieder zu den Juden hinaus und sagte ihnen: »Meiner Meinung nach ist der Mann unschuldig.39Ich will euch wie üblich auch in diesem Jahr am Passahfest einen Gefangenen freigeben. Wenn ihr wollt, lasse ich diesen König der Juden frei.«40Aber sie schrien laut: »Nein! Nicht den! Wir wollen Barabbas!« Barabbas aber war ein Verbrecher.
1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’5‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am he,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)6When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.7Again he asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said.8Jesus answered, ‘I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’ (Joh 6,39)10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)11Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?’12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
Peter’s first denial
15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant-girl on duty there and brought Peter in.17‘You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?’ she asked Peter. He replied, ‘I am not.’18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood round a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
The high priest questions Jesus
19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.20‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.’22When Jesus said this, one of the officials near by slapped him in the face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.23‘If I said something wrong,’ Jesus replied, ‘testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?’24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s second and third denials
25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?’ He denied it, saying, ‘I am not.’26One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, ‘Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?’27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a cock began to crow.
Jesus before Pilate
28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.29So Pilate came out to them and asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’30‘If he were not a criminal,’ they replied, ‘we would not have handed him over to you.’31Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.’ ‘But we have no right to execute anyone,’ they objected.32This took place to fulfil what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’34‘Is that your own idea,’ Jesus asked, ‘or did others talk to you about me?’35‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?’36Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.’37‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’38‘What is truth?’ retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, ‘I find no basis for a charge against him.39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release “the king of the Jews”?’40They shouted back, ‘No, not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
