1Jetzt werde ich zum dritten Mal zu euch kommen. Denkt daran: »Jede Sache soll durch die Aussage von zwei oder drei Zeugen entschieden werden.«[1] (5Mo 19,15)2Schon bei meinem zweiten Besuch habe ich euch gewarnt. Ich schreibe es jetzt in diesem Brief noch einmal unmissverständlich, und zwar denen, die in ihrer Schuld verharren, und auch allen anderen: Wenn ich wieder bei euch bin, hat meine Nachsicht ein Ende.3Ihr selbst wollt ja den Beweis, dass Christus durch mich spricht. Nun, Christus ist euch gegenüber nicht schwach, sondern stark und mächtig.4Als er gekreuzigt wurde, war er schwach; aber jetzt lebt er aus der Kraft Gottes. Auch wir sind schwach, weil wir mit Christus verbunden sind; doch euch gegenüber wird sich zeigen, dass wir mit Christus aus der Kraft Gottes leben.5Prüft euch! Stellt selbst fest, ob euer Glaube noch lebendig ist! Oder ist bei euch nichts mehr davon zu merken, dass Jesus Christus unter euch lebt? Dann allerdings hättet ihr diese Prüfung nicht bestanden.6Ich hoffe aber, ihr werdet erkennen, dass wir diese Probe bestanden haben.7Wir beten zu Gott, dass ihr nichts Böses tut, und zwar nicht, damit wir bestätigt werden, sondern allein damit ihr das Gute tut. Es macht uns nichts aus, dass wir in diesem Fall wie Versager dastehen, weil wir dann doch nicht – wie angekündigt – hart durchgegriffen haben.8Gegen Gottes Wahrheit können wir ohnehin nichts ausrichten, wir können nur für sie eintreten.9Gern wollen wir schwach sein, wenn ihr nur stark seid. Darum beten wir, dass ihr euch von Gott zurechtbringen lasst.10Ich habe euch das alles aus der Ferne geschrieben, ehe ich zu euch komme, damit ich nicht zu streng mit euch sein muss, wenn ich bei euch bin. Denn Gott hat mir seine Vollmacht gegeben, um euch aufzubauen, nicht um euch zu zerstören.11Zum Schluss, meine lieben Brüder und Schwestern, noch einmal meine Bitte: Freut euch! Lasst euch wieder auf den richtigen Weg zurückbringen! Hört auf alles, was ich euch geschrieben habe. Haltet fest zusammen und lebt in Frieden miteinander. Dann wird Gott, von dem alle Liebe und aller Friede kommt, bei euch sein.12Grüßt einander mit dem Friedenskuss. Die Gemeinde hier lässt euch grüßen.13Die Gnade unseres Herrn Jesus Christus, die Liebe Gottes und die Gemeinschaft, die der Heilige Geist schenkt, sei mit euch.

Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him in our dealing with you.5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realise that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?6And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.7Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong – not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.8For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.9We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.10This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority – the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.
