1 Viele Juden, deren Vorfahren König Nebukadnezar nach Babylonien verschleppt hatte, kehrten nun nach Jerusalem und nach ganz Juda zurück, jeder an den Ort, aus dem seine Familie ursprünglich stammte. (Neh 7,6)2 Sie wurden angeführt von Serubbabel, Jeschua, Nehemja, Seraja, Reelaja, Mordochai, Bilschan, Misperet, Bigwai, Rehum und Baana. Es folgt ein Verzeichnis der heimkehrenden Sippen mit der Zahl der zu ihnen gehörenden Männer:3 von der Sippe Parosch 2172;4 von Schefatja 372;5 von Arach 775;6 von Pahat-Moab 2812, sie waren Nachkommen von Jeschua und Joab;7 von Elam 1254;8 von Sattu 945;9 von Sakkai 760;10 von Bani 642;11 von Bebai 623;12 von Asgad 1222;13 von Adonikam 666;14 von Bigwai 2056;15 von Adin 454;16 von Ater 98, sie waren Nachkommen von Hiskia;17 von Bezai 323;18 von Jorah 112;19 von Haschum 223;20 von Gibbar 95;21 aus der Stadt Bethlehem 123;22 aus Netofa 56;23 aus Anatot 128;24 aus Asmawet 42;25 aus Kirjat-Jearim, Kefira und Beerot 743;26 aus Rama und Geba 621;27 aus Michmas 122;28 aus Bethel und Ai 223;29 aus Nebo 52;30 von der Sippe Magbisch 156;31 von der Sippe des anderen Elam 1254;32 von Harim 320;33 aus den Orten Lod, Hadid und Ono 725;34 aus Jericho 345;35 von der Sippe Senaa 3630.36 Aus den Sippen der Priester kehrten zurück: von der Sippe Jedaja 973 Männer mit ihren Familien, sie waren Nachkommen von Jeschua;37 von Immer 1052;38 von Paschhur 1247;39 von Harim 1017.40 Von den Leviten: aus den Sippen Jeschua und Kadmiël 74, sie waren Nachkommen von Hodawja;41 von den Tempelsängern: aus der Sippe Asaf 128;42 von den Wächtern an den Tempeltoren: aus den Sippen Schallum, Ater, Talmon, Akkub, Hatita und Schobai 139;43 von den Tempeldienern: die Sippen von Ziha, Hasufa, Tabbaot,44 Keros, Sia, Padon,45 Lebana, Hagaba, Akkub,46 Hagab, Salmai, Hanan,47 Giddel, Gahar, Reaja,48 Rezin, Nekoda, Gasam,49 Usa, Paseach, Besai,50 Asna, die Mëuniter und Nefusiter51 sowie die Sippen von Bakbuk, Hakufa, Harhur,52 Bazlut, Mehida, Harscha,53 Barkos, Sisera, Temach,54 Neziach und Hatifa.55 Von den Nachkommen der Diener Salomos kamen zurück: die Sippen von Sotai, Soferet, Peruda,56 Jaala, Darkon, Giddel,57 Schefatja, Hattil, Pocheret-Zebajim und Ami.58 Insgesamt kehrten 392 Tempeldiener und Nachkommen von Salomos Dienern nach Israel zurück.59-60 Von den heimkehrenden Familien stammten 652 aus den Orten Tel-Melach, Tel-Harscha, Kerub-Addon und Immer. Sie gehörten zu den Sippen Delaja, Tobija und Nekoda, konnten jedoch ihre israelitische Abstammung nicht nachweisen.61-62 Einige der Priester durften keinen Tempeldienst ausüben, denn ihre Abstammungsregister waren nicht aufzufinden. Sie kamen aus den Sippen von Habaja, Hakkoz und Barsillai. Der Stammvater der Sippe Barsillai hatte eine Tochter des Gileaditers Barsillai geheiratet und den Namen seines Schwiegervaters angenommen.63 Der persische Statthalter verbot den Priestern aus diesen drei Sippen, von den geweihten Opfergaben zu essen, bis wieder ein Hoherpriester im Amt wäre, der das heilige Los werfen durfte, um über ihren Fall zu entscheiden.64 Insgesamt kehrten 42.360 Israeliten in ihre Heimat zurück,65 dazu kamen 7337 Sklaven und Sklavinnen und 200 Sänger und Sängerinnen.66 Die Israeliten brachten 736 Pferde, 245 Maultiere,67 435 Kamele und 6720 Esel mit.68 Als sie beim Tempelgelände in Jerusalem ankamen, stifteten einige Sippenoberhäupter freiwillige Gaben, damit das Haus des HERRN wieder an seinem früheren Platz errichtet werden konnte.69 Jeder gab, so viel er konnte. Insgesamt kamen 61.000 Goldmünzen und 3600 Kilogramm Silber zusammen; außerdem wurden 100 Priestergewänder gestiftet.70 Die Priester, die Leviten, die Sänger, Torwächter und Tempeldiener ließen sich wie die übrigen Israeliten in ihren früheren Heimatorten nieder.
