König Hanun beleidigt Davids Gesandte

1 Einige Zeit später starb Nahasch, der König der Ammoniter, und sein Sohn Hanun trat die Nachfolge an. (1Chr 19,1) 2 David dachte: »König Nahasch war mir immer wohlgesinnt. Darum will ich mich nun seinem Sohn Hanun gegenüber freundlich verhalten.« Er schickte eine Gesandtschaft zu Hanun, um ihm sein Beileid auszusprechen. Als aber Davids Boten zum ammonitischen Königshof kamen, 3 sagten die Fürsten des Landes zu König Hanun: »Glaubst du wirklich, David hat diese Männer nur zu dir gesandt, um deinem Vater die letzte Ehre zu erweisen und dir sein Beileid auszusprechen? Das ist doch nur ein Vorwand! Spione sind sie, die unsere Hauptstadt auskundschaften sollen, weil David sie bald angreifen und erobern will!« 4 Da nahm Hanun Davids Gesandte gefangen, ließ ihnen den Bart auf einer Seite abrasieren und die Kleider bis über das Gesäß abschneiden. Dann jagte er sie davon. 5 Als David das erfuhr, schickte er seinen Gesandten Boten entgegen und ließ ihnen ausrichten: »Bleibt in Jericho, bis euer Bart wieder nachgewachsen ist, und kommt erst dann heim.« David wollte ihnen die Schande ersparen, mit abrasiertem Bart zurückkehren zu müssen.

Es kommt zum Krieg mit den Ammonitern

6 Die Ammoniter wussten genau, dass sie David durch diese Tat schwer beleidigt hatten. Darum warben sie 20.000 syrische Söldner aus Bet-Rehob und Zoba an, außerdem den König von Maacha mit einem Heer von 1000 Mann und schließlich noch 12.000 Soldaten aus Tob. (1Chr 19,6) 7 David hörte davon und befahl Joab, sofort mit dem ganzen Heer gegen die Feinde auszurücken. 8 Die Ammoniter stellten sich vor den Toren ihrer Hauptstadt Rabba zur Schlacht auf, während die verbündeten Syrer aus Zoba, Rehob, Tob und Maacha in einiger Entfernung auf offenem Feld Stellung bezogen. 9 Als Joab merkte, dass ihm von vorne und von hinten ein Angriff drohte, teilte er sein Heer. Er selbst wollte mit den besten Soldaten den Kampf gegen die Syrer aufnehmen. 10 Den Rest des Heeres übergab er dem Kommando seines Bruders Abischai, der gegen die Ammoniter kämpfen sollte. 11 Bevor die beiden Heere sich trennten, sagte Joab zu seinem Bruder: »Wenn die Syrer uns überlegen sind, dann komm uns mit deiner Truppe zu Hilfe. Sind die Ammoniter stärker als ihr, dann helfe ich dir mit meinen Soldaten. 12 Sei mutig und entschlossen! Wir wollen für unser Volk kämpfen und für die Städte, die Gott uns gegeben hat. Der HERR aber möge tun, was er für richtig hält.« 13 Dann griff Joab mit seinem Heer die Syrer an und schlug sie in die Flucht. 14 Als das die Ammoniter sahen, flohen auch sie vor Abischai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Da stellte Joab den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter ein und kehrte nach Jerusalem um.

Der Krieg gegen die Syrer

15 Die Syrer wollten sich mit der Niederlage gegen die Israeliten nicht abfinden, darum riefen sie noch einmal alle ihre Truppen zusammen. (1Chr 19,16) 16 Hadad-Eser ließ auch die syrischen Stämme, die jenseits des Euphrat in Mesopotamien wohnten, zum Kampf ausrücken. Schobach, der oberste Heerführer von Hadad-Eser, führte die syrischen Truppen nach Helam. 17 Als David das erfuhr, zog er alle wehrfähigen Israeliten ein, überquerte mit seinem Heer den Jordan und marschierte bis nach Helam. Die Syrer stellten sich zum Kampf auf, und eine heftige Schlacht begann. 18 Wieder wurden die Syrer in die Flucht geschlagen. Doch diesmal erlitten sie schwere Verluste: 700 Wagenlenker und 40.000 Reiter fielen. David hatte den Heerführer Schobach so schwer verwundet, dass er noch auf dem Schlachtfeld starb. 19 Die besiegten syrischen Könige, die bis dahin Hadad-Esers Untertanen gewesen waren, schlossen Frieden mit den Israeliten und stellten sich in ihren Dienst. Von da an wagten die Syrer nicht mehr, die Ammoniter zu unterstützen.

1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead. 2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David' servants came into the land of the children of Ammon. 3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it? 4 Wherefore Hanun took David' servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return. 6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men. 7 And when David heard of it , he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men. 8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field. 9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians: 10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon. 11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee. 12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good. 13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him. 14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem. 15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them. 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there. 19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
