De aanval op de stam Benjamin

1-2 Het hele volk Israël kwam naar Mispa. In totaal vierhonderdvijftigduizend man voetvolk, allemaal mannen die het zwaard konden hanteren. Eensgezind verzamelden zij zich daar voor de HERE. De mannen kwamen uit alle hoeken van het land, van Dan tot aan Berseba en ook uit het gebied Gilead aan de overkant van de Jordaan. 3 Algauw hoorden de mensen in het gebied Benjamin dat de Israëlitische troepen zich in Mispa hadden verzameld. Toen bogen de leiders van Israël zich over de vraag hoe deze verschrikkelijke gebeurtenis had kunnen plaatshebben. Daarop meldde zich de Leviet wiens vrouw was vermoord bij hen. 4 Hij zei: ‘Wij kwamen op een avond in Gibea, een stad in het gebied van Benjamin en wilden daar overnachten. 5 ʼs Nachts omsingelden de burgers van Gibea ons huis, ze waren van plan mij te onteren en te doden. Zij hebben toen mijn bijvrouw zo gruwelijk verkracht dat zij eraan is overleden. 6 Daarna heb ik haar lichaam in twaalf stukken gesneden en deze delen door het hele land Israël gestuurd, want die mannen hebben een schandelijke misdaad begaan. 7 Welnu, landgenoten, zeg wat u hiervan vindt en geef mij raad!’ 8 Toen stond het volk als één man op en antwoordde: ‘Niemand van ons zal naar huis teruggaan, maar het volgende zullen wij doen: 9-10 wij zullen Gibea verwoesten en door loting het land onder ons verdelen. Eerst zal een tiende deel van de verenigde legers van Israël worden aangewezen om de rest van ons van voedsel te voorzien. Daarna zullen wij Gibea verwoesten om deze gruwelijke misdaad.’ 11 De mannen van Israël waren eensgezind in hun besluit hard tegen Gibea op te treden. 12 Toen werden boodschappers naar de stam Benjamin gestuurd die moesten zeggen: ‘Wat voor vreselijks is bij u gebeurd? 13 Lever die misdadigers uit de stad Gibea aan ons uit, zodat wij hen kunnen terechtstellen en dit kwaad uit Israël uitroeien.’ Maar de Benjaminieten wilden niet luisteren naar hun broeders, de Israëlieten. 14-15 Integendeel, zesentwintigduizend strijdvaardige Benjaminieten uit andere steden verzamelden zich in Gibea om de zevenhonderd goed getrainde soldaten uit Gibea te versterken voor de strijd tegen de rest van Israël. 16 Uit de verenigde legers werd een keurkorps van zevenhonderd linkshandige slingeraars gevormd. Deze mannen konden met een steen tot op een haar nauwkeurig mikken, zonder ooit het doel te missen. 17 Het leger van Israël—de Benjaminieten dus niet meegerekend—telde vierhonderdduizend mannen die goed met het zwaard konden omgaan, geoefende strijders. 18 Het Israëlitische leger trok eerst van Mispa naar Betel om God te raadplegen. ‘Welke stam zal ons aanvoeren bij de aanval op de Benjaminieten?’ vroegen zij. De HERE antwoordde: ‘Juda zal vooropgaan.’ 19-21 De volgende morgen braken zij hun kamp op en trokken naar Gibea om de Benjaminieten aan te vallen. Maar de mannen van Benjamin stormden naar buiten en doodden die dag tweeëntwintigduizend Israëlieten. 22-24 Toen ging Israël weer naar Betel en huilde voor de HERE tot aan de avond en vroeg Hem: ‘Moeten we verder vechten tegen onze broeder Benjamin?’ En de HERE antwoordde: ‘Ja.’ Daardoor kregen de mannen van Israël weer moed en rukten de volgende dag opnieuw uit om op dezelfde plaats te gaan vechten. 25 Maar ook die dag stormden de Benjaminieten de stad uit en maakten nog eens achttienduizend slachtoffers onder de Israëlieten, allemaal ervaren zwaardvechters. 26 Toen trok het hele volk opnieuw naar Betel, huilde en vastte daar voor de HERE tot de avond en bracht brandoffers en vredeoffers. 27-28 Voor die gelegenheid stond de ark van het verbond in Betel, en Pinechas, de zoon van Eleazar en kleinzoon van Aäron, was priester. Bij monde van Pinechas vroegen de mannen van Israël de HERE om raad. ‘Moeten wij opnieuw onze broeder Benjamin aanvallen of zullen we ermee ophouden?’ En de HERE antwoordde: ‘Val aan, want morgen zal Ik hen in uw macht geven.’ 29-30 Het Israëlitische leger legde hinderlagen rond de stad en rukte voor de derde keer op tegen de Benjaminieten. Zij stelden zich in slagorde op voor Gibea, net als de vorige keren. 31 Toen het leger van Benjamin de stad uit marcheerde voor de aanval, trokken de Israëlitische troepen zich terug. Zo werden de Benjaminieten van de stad weggelokt, toen zij Israël achtervolgden. Net als de vorige keren vochten de Benjaminieten met de mannen van Israël en op de wegen naar Betel en Gibea doodden zij ongeveer dertig mannen van Israël. 32 De Benjaminieten dachten toen dat zij net als tevoren de Israëlieten hadden verslagen, maar deze hadden van tevoren afgesproken te vluchten om zo het leger van Benjamin weg te lokken van de stad naar de grote wegen. 33-34 Op het moment dat het leger van Israël Baäl-Tamar bereikte, keerde het om en viel zijn achtervolgers aan. De tienduizend man sterke Israëlitische keurtroepen, die verdekt lagen opgesteld op de open plek bij Gibea, kwamen tevoorschijn en vielen de achterhoede van het leger van Benjamin aan. De Benjaminieten beseften echter nog niet wat voor onheil hun boven het hoofd hing. 35 De HERE hielp Israël Benjamin te verslaan en zij doodden die dag vijfentwintigduizend en honderd Benjaminieten. 36-39 Het leger van Israël week terug voor de mannen van Benjamin om de Israëlieten die in de hinderlaag bij Gibea lagen, de gelegenheid te geven tot actie over te gaan. Toen de mannen van Benjamin ongeveer dertig Israëlieten hadden gedood, dachten zij dat het net zoʼn grote slachtpartij zou worden als de vorige keren. Maar de mannen die uit de hinderlaag tevoorschijn kwamen, stormden Gibea binnen, doodden iedereen met het zwaard en staken de stad in brand. De zware rookwolken die uit de stad opstegen, waren voor het Israëlitische leger het teken zich om te keren en het leger van Benjamin aan te vallen. 40-41 Toen de Benjaminieten omkeken, zagen ze aan de grote rookwolken dat hun stad in lichterlaaie stond. Toen zij ook nog zagen dat de Israëlieten zich omkeerden en op hen afstormden, beseften zij dat hun ondergang nabij was. 42 Zij vluchtten in de richting van de woestijn, maar konden de strijd niet ontlopen, want de Israëlieten kwamen hen achterna en sloegen de mannen in de achterhoede neer, evenals al degenen die uit de steden waren gekomen om hen te helpen. 43 Na een achtervolging sloten zij de Benjaminieten ten oosten van Gibea in en versloegen hen. 44 Die dag sneuvelden achttienduizend Benjaminitische soldaten. 45 De rest van het leger vluchtte naar de woestijn, naar de rots Rimmon, maar onderweg werden nog vijfduizend mannen gedood en nog eens tweeduizend bij Gidom. 46 De stam Benjamin verloor die dag dus in totaal vijfentwintigduizend soldaten. 47 Slechts zeshonderd mannen wisten in de woestijn naar de rots Rimmon te ontkomen, waar zij vier maanden bleven. 48 Het Israëlitische leger keerde terug om met de rest van de stam Benjamin af te rekenen—mannen, vrouwen, kinderen en vee—en zij staken alle steden in het gebied Benjamin in brand.

Israel’s War with the Tribe of Benjamin

3 (Now the people of Benjamin heard that the people of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the people of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this evil happen?” 4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “I came to Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night. (Ri 19:15) 5 And the leaders of Gibeah rose against me and surrounded the house against me by night. They meant to kill me, and they violated my concubine, and she is dead. (Ri 19:22; Ri 19:25) 6 So I took hold of my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel, for they have committed abomination and outrage in Israel. (Ri 19:23; Ri 19:29) 7 Behold, you people of Israel, all of you, give your advice and counsel here.” (Ri 19:30) 8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, and none of us will return to his house. 9 But now this is what we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot, 10 and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand, to bring provisions for the people, that when they come they may repay Gibeah of Benjamin for all the outrage that they have committed in Israel.” 11 So all the men of Israel gathered against the city, united as one man. 12 And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What evil is this that has taken place among you? 14 Then the people of Benjamin came together out of the cities to Gibeah to go out to battle against the people of Israel. 15 And the people of Benjamin mustered out of their cities on that day 26,000 men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who mustered 700 chosen men. (Num 1:37; Num 26:41; Ri 20:2) 16 Among all these were 700 chosen men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. (Ri 3:15; 1 Kron 12:2) 17 And the men of Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered 400,000 men who drew the sword; all these were men of war. (Ri 20:15) 18 The people of Israel arose and went up to Bethel and inquired of God, “Who shall go up first for us to fight against the people of Benjamin?” And the Lord said, “Judah shall go up first.” (Ri 1:1; Ri 20:26; Ri 20:31) 19 Then the people of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah. 20 And the men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin, and the men of Israel drew up the battle line against them at Gibeah. 21 The people of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and destroyed on that day 22,000 men of the Israelites. (Ri 20:25) 22 But the people, the men of Israel, took courage, and again formed the battle line in the same place where they had formed it on the first day. 23 And the people of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until the evening. And they inquired of the Lord, “Shall we again draw near to fight against our brothers, the people of Benjamin?” And the Lord said, “Go up against them.” (Ri 20:26) 24 So the people of Israel came near against the people of Benjamin the second day. 25 And Benjamin went against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed 18,000 men of the people of Israel. All these were men who drew the sword. (Ri 20:2; Ri 20:21) 26 Then all the people of Israel, the whole army, went up and came to Bethel and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 29 So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah. (Joz 8:4) 30 And the people of Israel went up against the people of Benjamin on the third day and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times. 31 And the people of Benjamin went out against the people and were drawn away from the city. And as at other times they began to strike and kill some of the people in the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, and in the open country, about thirty men of Israel. (Ri 20:18; Ri 20:26; Ri 21:19) 32 And the people of Benjamin said, “They are routed before us, as at the first.” But the people of Israel said, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.” (Joz 8:5) 33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar, and the men of Israel who were in ambush rushed out of their place from Maareh-geba.^[1] 34 And there came against Gibeah 10,000 chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was hard, but the Benjaminites did not know that disaster was close upon them. (Ri 20:41) 35 And the Lord defeated Benjamin before Israel, and the people of Israel destroyed 25,100 men of Benjamin that day. All these were men who drew the sword. (Ri 20:2) 36 So the people of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, because they trusted the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah. 37 Then the men in ambush hurried and rushed against Gibeah; the men in ambush moved out and struck all the city with the edge of the sword. (Joz 8:19) 38 Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in the main ambush was that when they made a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city 39 the men of Israel should turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun to strike and kill about thirty men of Israel. They said, “Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle.” (Ri 20:31) 40 But when the signal began to rise out of the city in a column of smoke, the Benjaminites looked behind them, and behold, the whole of the city went up in smoke to heaven. (Joz 8:20) 41 Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed, for they saw that disaster was close upon them. (Ri 20:34) 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them. And those who came out of the cities were destroying them in their midst. (Joz 8:15; Joz 8:24) 43 Surrounding the Benjaminites, they pursued them and trod them down from Nohah^[2] as far as opposite Gibeah on the east. 44 Eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell, all of them men of valor. 45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon. Five thousand men of them were cut down in the highways. And they were pursued hard to Gidom, and 2,000 men of them were struck down. (Joz 15:32; Ri 20:42; Ri 21:13) 46 So all who fell that day of Benjamin were 25,000 men who drew the sword, all of them men of valor. 47 But 600 men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon and remained at the rock of Rimmon four months. (Ri 20:42; Ri 20:45) 48 And the men of Israel turned back against the people of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, the city, men and beasts and all that they found. And all the towns that they found they set on fire.
