1Daarop stuurde Jozua twee spionnen vanuit het kamp bij Sittim de rivier over om het gebied aan de overkant van de rivier te verkennen, in het bijzonder Jericho. De spionnen vertrokken en gingen het huis binnen van Rachab, een prostituee. Zij wilden daar de nacht doorbrengen.2Maar iemand lichtte de koning van Jericho in dat twee Israëlieten, vermoedelijk spionnen, die avond waren aangekomen.3De koning stuurde de mannen naar het huis van Rachab met de eis hen uit te leveren. ‘Het zijn spionnen,’ legden zij uit. ‘Zij zijn er door hun leiders op uitgestuurd om te ontdekken hoe zij ons het beste kunnen aanvallen.’4Zij had de mannen echter verborgen en zei tegen de aanvoerder van de groep: ‘Die mannen zijn hier inderdaad geweest, maar ik wist niet waar ze vandaan kwamen.5Toen het donker werd, vlak voordat de stadspoorten werden gesloten, hebben zij de stad verlaten en ik weet niet waar ze naartoe gingen. Als u zich haast, kunt u hen waarschijnlijk nog wel inhalen!’6In werkelijkheid had zij de mannen naar het dak gebracht en verborgen onder vlasstengels die daar lagen te drogen.7De mannen gingen de vermeende vluchtelingen achterna tot aan de Jordaan. De stadspoorten gingen achter hen dicht.8Rachab ging intussen naar het dak om te praten met de mannen, voordat zij gingen slapen.9Zij zei: ‘Ik weet heel goed dat uw God mijn land aan u gaat geven. Wij leven in grote angst voor u. Alle inwoners van dit land zijn verlamd door angst en radeloos.10Wij hebben namelijk gehoord hoe de HERE voor u een pad door de Rietzee maakte na uw vertrek uit Egypte! En wij weten ook wat u deed met Sichon en Og, de twee Amoritische koningen ten oosten van de Jordaan, hoe u hun land onder de voet liep en hun hele volk uitroeide.11Geen wonder dat wij bang zijn! Niemand heeft nog de moed te vechten als hij dat allemaal heeft gehoord. Want uw God regeert als God boven in de hemelen en beneden op de aarde.12-13Ik wil u om één ding smeken: zweer mij bij de naam van uw God dat u bij de verovering van Jericho mij, mijn ouders en mijn broers en zusters met hun gezinnen in leven laat, omdat ik u heb geholpen.’14De mannen antwoordden: ‘Als u ons niet verraadt, zullen wij ervoor zorgen dat u en uw familieleden niets overkomt. Wij zullen u dankbaarheid en trouw bewijzen en u met ons eigen leven beschermen.’15Toen liet zij de mannen aan een touw langs de stadsmuur naar beneden zakken. Haar huis stond namelijk boven op de muur.16‘Vlucht naar de heuvels,’ raadde zij hun aan. ‘Verberg u daar drie dagen tot de mannen die u zoeken, zijn teruggekeerd. Daarna kunt u zonder gevaar teruggaan.’17-18Voordat zij gingen, zeiden de mannen tegen haar: ‘Wij kunnen er niet voor instaan dat u niets overkomt als u niet bij de verovering dit rode koord uit het raam laat hangen. Zorg er ook voor dat al uw familieleden bij u in huis zijn.19Als zij op straat komen, zijn wij niet verantwoordelijk voor de gevolgen. Maar wij zweren u dat niemand in dit huis zal worden gedood of verwond.20Als u ons echter verraadt, zullen wij niet langer aan deze eed gebonden zijn.’21‘Dat beloof ik,’ antwoordde zij. En zij hing het rode koord uit het raam.22De spionnen trokken de heuvels in en bleven daar drie dagen, totdat de achtervolgers na een vruchteloze speuractie naar de stad waren teruggekeerd.23Toen kwamen de twee spionnen uit de heuvels, staken de rivier over en brachten Jozua verslag uit over wat er was gebeurd.24‘De HERE zal ons vast en zeker het hele land in handen geven,’ zeiden zij, ‘want alle inwoners zijn nu al vreselijk bang voor ons.’
1And Joshua the son of Nun sent[1] two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. (Num 25:1; Mat 1:5; Heb 11:31; Jak 2:25)2And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”3Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.5And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”6But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof.7So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. (Ri 3:28; Ri 7:24)8Before the men[2] lay down, she came up to them on the roof9and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. (Ex 15:15; Ex 15:16; Ex 23:27; Joz 2:11; Joz 2:24)10For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.[3] (Ex 14:21; Num 21:23; Num 21:33; Joz 4:23; Ps 135:11; Ps 136:19)11And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. (Ex 15:14; Deut 4:39; Joz 2:9; Joz 5:1; Joz 7:5; 2 Sam 17:10; Ps 22:14; Jes 13:7; Ez 21:7)12Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign (Joz 2:18)13that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”14And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” (Ri 1:24)15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. (1 Sam 19:12; Hand 9:25; 2 Cor 11:33)16And she said[4] to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.”17The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear.18Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. (Joz 2:12; Joz 6:23)19Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. (Mat 27:25)20But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” (Joz 2:14)21And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.22They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing.23Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. (Joz 2:7)24And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.” (Ex 23:31; Joz 2:9; Joz 21:44)
