Jeremia kiest voor Juda

1 Nebuzaradan nam Jeremia mee naar Rama, nadat hij hem geboeid had aangetroffen tussen de ballingen uit Jeruzalem en Juda die naar Babel zouden worden gevoerd. In Rama liet hij hem vrij. 2-3 Toen hij hem had gevonden, riep hij Jeremia bij zich en zei: ‘De HERE, uw God, heeft deze ramp over dit land gebracht, precies zoals Hij had gezegd. Want deze mensen hebben tegen de HERE gezondigd. Daarom is dit gebeurd. 4 Maar u zal ik vrijuit laten gaan. Als u met mij mee wilt naar Babel, vind ik dat ook goed, ik zal ervoor zorgen dat u dan goed wordt behandeld. Maar als u niet mee wilt, hoeft het niet. Het hele land ligt voor u open, u kunt gaan waar u wilt. 5 Als u besluit te blijven, ga dan terug naar Gedalja die door de koning van Babel is benoemd tot gouverneur van Juda en sluit u aan bij het overgebleven volk dat hij regeert. U moet zelf beslissen, u mag doen wat u wilt.’ Toen gaf Nebuzaradan Jeremia wat voedsel en geld en liet hem gaan. 6 Jeremia ging terug naar Gedalja in Mispa en bleef bij de mensen die in het land waren achtergebleven. 7 Toen de leiders van het verzet hoorden dat de koning van Babel Gedalja tot gouverneur over de armen van het land had benoemd en dat hij niet iedereen had verbannen, 8 zochten zij Gedalja op in zijn hoofdkwartier in Mispa. Dit zijn de namen van de leiders die daar kwamen: Jismaël, de zoon van Netanja; Jochanan en Jonatan, de zonen van Kareach; Seraja, de zoon van Tanchumet; de zonen van Efai, de Netofatiet, en Jezanja, de zoon van de Maächatiet. Zij hadden hun soldaten bij zich. 9 Gedalja trachtte hen ervan te overtuigen dat het niet gevaarlijk was zich aan de Babyloniërs over te geven. ‘Blijf hier en dien de koning van Babel,’ zei hij, ‘en het zal u goed gaan. 10 Wat mijzelf betreft, ik zal in Mispa blijven als uw vertegenwoordiger bij de Babyloniërs, als zij hier komen om mijn beleid te controleren. Vestig u ergens in een stad en leef van de opbrengsten van het land. Oogst de druiven, het zomerfruit en de olijven en sla die op.’ 11 Toen de Judeeërs in Moab, Ammon en Edom en de andere naburige landen hoorden dat een kleine groep mensen in Juda was achtergebleven en dat de koning van Babel hen niet allemaal had weggevoerd en dat Gedalja tot gouverneur was benoemd, 12 kwamen zij terug naar Juda. Zij gingen eerst naar Mispa om met Gedalja over hun plannen te praten en trokken daarna verder naar de verlaten boerderijen, waar zij grote oogsten wijndruiven en zomerfruit binnenhaalden. 13-14 Maar korte tijd later kwamen Jochanan, de zoon van Kareach, en de andere verzetsmensen naar Mispa om Gedalja te vertellen dat koning Baälis van Ammon, Jismaël, de zoon van Netanja, had gestuurd om hem te vermoorden. Maar Gedalja wilde hen niet geloven. 15 Toen sprak Jochanan onder vier ogen met Gedalja en bood aan Jismaël in het geheim te doden. ‘Waarom zouden wij hem hier laten komen en het risico nemen dat hij u vermoordt?’ vroeg Jochanan. ‘Wat zal er dan gebeuren met de Judeeërs die zijn teruggekomen? Waarom zou dit restant uiteengejaagd moeten worden? Dat zou hun ondergang betekenen.’ 16 Maar Gedalja zei: ‘Ik verbied u zoiets te doen, want wat u over Jismaël vertelt, is niet waar.’

Jeremiah Remains in Judah

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he took him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. (Joz 18:25; Ps 149:8; Jer 39:14) 2 The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God pronounced this disaster against this place. (Deut 29:24; Deut 29:28) 3 The Lord has brought it about, and has done as he said. Because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you. 4 Now, behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go. (Gen 20:15; Jer 39:12; Jer 40:1) 5 If you remain,^[1] then return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever you think it right to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present, and let him go. (Jer 39:14; Jer 41:2) 6 Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land. 7 When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon, (2 Kon 25:12; 2 Kon 25:23; Jer 39:10; Jer 40:5)

8 they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. (Jer 40:6; Jer 40:13; Jer 40:14; Jer 40:15; Jer 40:16; Jer 41:1; Jer 42:1; Jer 42:8)

9 Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. (Jer 38:20) 10 As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. But as for you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and store them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.” (Jer 40:6; Jer 40:12) 11 Likewise, when all the Judeans who were in Moab and among the Ammonites and in Edom and in other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over them, (Gen 36:8; Num 22:1; 1 Sam 11:1; 1 Sam 12:12; 2 Sam 8:2)

12 then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance. (Jer 40:10; Jer 43:5) 13 Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah (Jer 40:8; Jer 40:15; Jer 41:11; Jer 42:1; Jer 42:8)

14 and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. (Jer 41:10) 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?” (Jer 42:2) 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”
