1De ark bleef zeven maanden in het land van de Filistijnen.2Toen riepen de Filistijnen hun priesters en waarzeggers erbij en vroegen: ‘Wat moeten wij doen met de ark van God? Welk soort geschenk moeten wij meesturen als wij hem naar Israël terugbrengen?’3‘U moet hem inderdaad terugsturen met een geschenk,’ werd hun gezegd. ‘Stuur een schadeloosstelling mee, zodat de plaag ophoudt. Als deze ophoudt, weet u waarom God die plaag heeft veroorzaakt.’4‘Wat moeten wij meesturen als schadeloosstelling?’ vroegen zij. De priesters en waarzeggers antwoordden: ‘Stuur vijf gouden beeldjes van het gezwel dat door de plaag ontstond en vijf gouden beeldjes van de muizen die in het hele land hebben huisgehouden.5Als u deze geschenken meestuurt en de God van Israël de verschuldigde eer bewijst, zal Hij misschien ophouden u en uw god te achtervolgen.6Wees niet zo koppig en opstandig als de farao en zijn Egyptenaren waren. Zij wilden Israël niet eerder laten gaan dan nadat God hen met vreselijke plagen had getroffen.7Maak een nieuwe wagen en span er twee koeien voor die net hebben gekalfd. Het moeten koeien zijn die nog nooit eerder met een juk hebben gelopen. Sluit hun kalveren op in een schuur.8Zet de ark van God op de kar met daarnaast een kist met de gouden beeldjes van de gezwellen en de muizen als schadeloosstelling. Laat de koeien dan maar gewoon lopen waarheen zij willen.9Als zij de grens over gaan naar Bet-Semes, zal het u duidelijk zijn dat de God van Israël dit grote onheil over ons bracht. Als dat niet het geval is en zij keren terug naar hun kalveren, weten wij dat de plaag gewoon toeval was en helemaal niet door hun God werd gestuurd.’10Deze aanwijzingen werden uitgevoerd. Twee jonge koeien die pas hadden gekalfd, werden voor de wagen gespannen. Hun kalveren werden in een schuur opgesloten.11Daarna werden de ark van de HERE en de kist met de gouden muizen en gezwellen op de wagen gezet.12Zonder enige aarzeling sloegen de koeien, al loeiend, de weg naar Bet-Semes in. De Filistijnse koningen volgden de wagen op een afstand tot deze bij de grens van Bet-Semes was.13Op dat moment waren de inwoners van Bet-Semes in het dal de tarwe aan het oogsten. Toen zij de ark zagen, werden zij wild van vreugde!14De wagen reed het veld op van een zekere Josua en kwam tot stilstand naast een groot rotsblok. De inwoners sloopten de wagen en maakten met het hout daarvan een vuur, waarop zij de twee koeien die de wagen hadden getrokken, aan de HERE offerden als brandoffer.15Enkele Levieten hadden de ark en de kist met de gouden muizen en gezwellen van de wagen getild en op het rotsblok gezet. De inwoners van Bet-Semes offerden die dag nog meer brandoffers en geschenken aan de HERE.16De vijf Filistijnse koningen bleven nog een poosje toekijken naar wat er met de wagen en de ark gebeurde en gingen die dag weer terug naar Ekron.17De vijf gouden beeldjes van de gezwellen die de Filistijnen als een schadeloosstelling aan de HERE hadden gestuurd, waren het geschenk van de vijf belangrijkste steden Asdod, Gaza, Askelon, Gat en Ekron.18Van de gouden muizen waren er net zoveel als er Filistijnse steden waren, zowel versterkte steden als plattelandsdorpen, die door de vijf koningen werden geregeerd. Het grote rotsblok bij Bet-Semes waarop de ark was neergezet, is nog steeds te zien op het veld van Josua.19De HERE doodde echter zeventig inwoners van Bet-Semes, omdat zij in de ark hadden gekeken. Alle inwoners rouwden daarna om de vele slachtoffers die de HERE onder hen had gemaakt.20‘Wie kan de aanwezigheid van de HERE, deze heilige God, verdragen?’ riepen zij uit. ‘Waar moeten we met de ark heen?’21Zij besloten boodschappers te sturen naar de bewoners van Kirjat-Jearim om hun te vertellen dat de Filistijnen de ark van de HERE hadden teruggebracht. ‘Kom hem hier alstublieft weghalen!’ smeekten zij.
1The ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.2And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us with what we shall send it to its place.” (Gen 41:8; Ex 7:11; Deut 18:10; Dan 2:2; Dan 5:7)3They said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty, but by all means return him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand does not turn away from you.” (Lev 5:15; 1 Sam 6:9)4And they said, “What is the guilt offering that we shall return to him?” They answered, “Five golden tumors and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines, for the same plague was on all of you and on your lords. (Joz 13:3; Ri 3:3; 1 Sam 5:6; 1 Sam 5:9; 1 Sam 5:12; 1 Sam 6:17)5So you must make images of your tumors and images of your mice that ravage the land, and give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you and your gods and your land. (Joz 7:19; 1 Sam 5:3; 1 Sam 5:6; 1 Sam 5:7; 1 Sam 5:9; 1 Sam 5:11; 1 Sam 6:4)6Why should you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? After he had dealt severely with them, did they not send the people away, and they departed? (Ex 7:13; Ex 8:15; Ex 8:32; Ex 9:7; Ex 9:35; Ex 10:1; Ex 12:31; Ex 14:17)7Now then, take and prepare a new cart and two milk cows on which there has never come a yoke, and yoke the cows to the cart, but take their calves home, away from them. (Num 19:2; 2 Sam 6:3)8And take the ark of the Lord and place it on the cart and put in a box at its side the figures of gold, which you are returning to him as a guilt offering. Then send it off and let it go its way (1 Sam 6:3; 1 Sam 6:4)9and watch. If it goes up on the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm, but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it happened to us by coincidence.” (Joz 15:10; 1 Sam 6:3)10The men did so, and took two milk cows and yoked them to the cart and shut up their calves at home.11And they put the ark of the Lord on the cart and the box with the golden mice and the images of their tumors.12And the cows went straight in the direction of Beth-shemesh along one highway, lowing as they went. They turned neither to the right nor to the left, and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh. (Num 20:19; Joz 21:16)13Now the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley. And when they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, they rejoiced to see it. (1 Sam 6:12)14The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh and stopped there. A great stone was there. And they split up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. (1 Sam 6:18)15And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the box that was beside it, in which were the golden figures, and set them upon the great stone. And the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices on that day to the Lord. (1 Sam 6:12; 1 Sam 6:14)16And when the five lords of the Philistines saw it, they returned that day to Ekron. (1 Sam 6:4)17These are the golden tumors that the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron, (1 Sam 6:3; 1 Sam 6:8)18and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and unwalled villages. The great stone beside which they set down the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh. (Deut 3:5; 1 Sam 6:14)19And he struck some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked upon the ark of the Lord. He struck seventy men of them,[1] and the people mourned because the Lord had struck the people with a great blow. (Ex 19:21; Num 4:15; Num 4:20; 2 Sam 6:7)20Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? And to whom shall he go up away from us?” (2 Sam 6:9)21So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to you.” (Joz 9:17; Joz 18:14; 1 Kron 13:5)
