1Ieder die gelooft dat Jezus de Christus is, dat Hij Gods Zoon en onze Redder is, is een kind van God. En ieder die van de Vader houdt, houdt ook van diens kinderen.2Hieruit volgt dus dat wij, als wij God liefhebben en doen wat Hij zegt, ook zijn kinderen liefhebben.3Want God liefhebben, is doen wat Hij zegt. En dat is helemaal niet zo moeilijk.4Elk kind van God kan de wereld overwinnen door op Hem te vertrouwen.5Alleen als wij geloven dat Jezus de Zoon van God is, kunnen wij de wereld overwinnen.6Wij weten dat Jezus de Zoon van God is, omdat dat bevestigd is door zijn doop in water en door het bloed van zijn dood. En ook de Heilige Geest, die altijd de waarheid spreekt, zegt dat Hij de Zoon van God is.7Er zijn dus drie getuigen in de hemel: de Vader, het Woord en de Heilige Geest, en samen zijn Zij één.8En er zijn drie getuigen op aarde: de Heilige Geest, het water en het bloed, en ook deze drie horen bij elkaar.9Als wij mensen geloven die getuigen, moeten wij zéker het getuigenis van God aannemen. Hij zegt dat Jezus Christus zijn Zoon is.10Ieder die dit gelooft, heeft het getuigenis van God aanvaard. Als iemand dit niet gelooft, zegt hij daarmee dat God een leugenaar is, omdat hij niet gelooft wat God over zijn Zoon heeft gezegd.11En wat heeft God dan wel gezegd? Dat Hij ons eeuwig leven heeft gegeven en dat dit leven in zijn Zoon is.12Wie dus de Zoon van God heeft, heeft het leven, maar wie de Zoon van God niet heeft, heeft het leven niet.13Ik heb dit geschreven aan u die in de Zoon van God gelooft, om u de zekerheid te geven dat u eeuwig leven hebt.14Wij weten dat Hij naar ons luistert als wij Hem iets vragen wat met zijn wil overeenstemt.15En als wij weten dat Hij naar ons luistert, mogen wij er ook zeker van zijn dat Hij ons geeft wat wij Hem vragen.16Als u iemand ziet zondigen op een manier die niet de dood tot gevolg heeft, vraag God dan het hem niet toe te rekenen. Als hij geen dodelijke zonde heeft gedaan, zal God hem het leven geven. Er bestaat namelijk een zonde die dodelijk is, en ik zeg niet dat u moet bidden voor iemand die zo zwaar gezondigd heeft.17Alle onrecht is zonde, maar niet alle zonde is dodelijk.18Wij weten dat ieder die een kind van God is, niet zondigt, want de Zoon van God beschermt hem en de duivel kan hem niets doen.19Wij weten dat wij kinderen van God zijn en dat de hele wereld in de macht van de duivel is.20Wij weten dat de Zoon van God gekomen is en ons heeft laten zien hoe wij de enige en echte God kunnen leren kennen. Wij zijn één met de ware God door zijn Zoon Jezus Christus. Hij is de ware God, Hem te kennen, is het eeuwige leven.21Vrienden, houd u ver van alles wat Gods plaats in uw hart zou kunnen innemen.
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. Testimony Concerning the Son of God
6This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. (Joh 14:17; Joh 15:26; Joh 16:13; Hand 5:32; 1 Joh 5:8)7For there are three that testify:8the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree.9If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
