Die Kundschafter der Daniter

1 In jenen Tagen gab es keinen König in Israel. Und in jenen Tagen war der Stamm der Daniter dabei, sich einen Erbbesitz zu suchen, um sich niederzulassen; denn es war ihm inmitten der Stämme Israels bis zu jener Zeit noch kein Erbbesitz zugefallen. (Jos 19,47; Ri 1,34; Ri 17,6) 2 Die Daniter schickten aus ihrer gesamten Sippe fünf kampferprobte Männer aus Zora und Eschtaol aus, um das Land zu durchstreifen und zu erkunden. Sie sagten zu ihnen: Geht, erkundet das Land! Die Männer kamen ins Gebirge Efraim zum Haus Michas und übernachteten dort. 3 Als sie beim Haus Michas waren, erkannten sie die Stimme des jungen Leviten. Sie gingen zu ihm hin und fragten ihn: Wer hat dich hierher gebracht? Was willst du hier und was tust du hier? 4 Er antwortete ihnen: Das und das hat Micha mit mir gemacht; er hat mich angestellt und so wurde ich sein Priester. 5 Sie sagten zu ihm: Befrag doch Gott für uns, damit wir erfahren, ob unser Weg, auf dem wir gehen, zum Erfolg führt! 6 Der Priester erwiderte ihnen: Zieht in Frieden weiter! Der Weg, den ihr gehen wollt, liegt vor dem HERRN. 7 Die fünf Männer zogen weiter und kamen nach Lajisch. Sie sahen, dass das Volk dort ungestört nach Art der Sidonier lebte, ruhig und sicher. Es gab niemand, der Schaden anrichtete im Land, keinen Eroberer und keine Unterdrückung. Sie waren weit entfernt von den Sidoniern und lebten zurückgezogen von den Menschen.^[1] 8 Als die Männer zu ihren Brüdern nach Zora und Eschtaol kamen, sagten ihre Brüder zu ihnen: Wie ist es euch ergangen? 9 Sie antworteten: Auf, ziehen wir hinauf gegen sie! Denn wir haben gesehen, dass das Land sehr gut ist. Und da zaudert ihr? Zögert nicht! Macht euch auf den Weg dorthin und nehmt das Land in Besitz! 10 Ihr findet ein sorgloses Volk vor, wenn ihr hinkommt. Das Land ist nach allen Seiten hin weiträumig. Wahrhaftig, Gott hat es in eure Hand gegeben. Es ist ein Ort, wo es an nichts fehlt, was es auf Erden gibt.

Zug der Daniter nach Norden und Raub des Gottesbildes

11 Darauf brachen von dort, also von Zora und Eschtaol aus, sechshundert mit Waffen ausgerüstete Männer aus der Sippe der Daniter auf. 12 Sie zogen hinauf und schlugen bei Kirjat-Jearim in Juda ihr Lager auf; deshalb nennt man diesen Ort bis auf den heutigen Tag Lager Dans; es liegt hinter Kirjat-Jearim. 13 Von dort zogen sie hinüber ins Gebirge Efraim und kamen zum Haus Michas. 14 Da sagten die fünf Männer, die unterwegs gewesen waren, um das Land Lajisch zu erkunden, zu ihren Brüdern: Wisst ihr auch, dass es in diesen Häusern ein Efod und Terafim sowie ein Schnitzbild und ein Gussbild gibt? Überlegt also, was ihr tun wollt! 15 Da bogen sie dorthin ab und gingen zum Haus des jungen Leviten, zum Haus Michas, und fragten ihn nach seinem Befinden. 16 Sechshundert mit Waffen ausgerüstete Daniter blieben am Hoftor stehen, 17 während die fünf Männer, die unterwegs gewesen waren, um das Land zu erkunden, hineingingen. Sie nahmen das Schnitzbild und das Efod und die Terafim und das Gussbild, während der Priester am Eingang des Tores bei den sechshundert mit Waffen ausgerüsteten Männern stand. 18 Als die Leute in das Haus Michas eindrangen und das Schnitzbild und das Efod und die Terafim und das Gussbild nahmen, fragte sie der Priester: Was macht ihr da? 19 Sie antworteten ihm: Schweig! Leg deine Hand auf deinen Mund! Geh mit uns und werde uns Vater und Priester! Was ist besser - wenn du Priester im Haus eines einzigen Mannes bist oder wenn du Priester für einen Stamm und eine Sippe in Israel bist? 20 Da wurde der Priester froh in seinem Herzen. Er nahm das Efod, die Terafim und das Schnitzbild und begab sich damit unter die Leute. 21 Sie wandten sich um und zogen weiter. Die Kinder, das Vieh und die Habe führten sie an der Spitze des Zuges mit sich. 22 Als sie schon weit weg vom Haus Michas waren, wurden die Männer in den Häusern, die in der Nähe von Michas Haus lagen, aufgeboten und sie holten die Daniter ein. 23 Sie riefen hinter den Danitern her, diese aber wandten sich um und sagten zu Micha: Was ist los? Warum habt ihr euch zusammengetan? 24 Er antwortete: Ihr habt meinen Gott, den ich mir gemacht hatte, und auch den Priester weggenommen und seid davongezogen. Was habe ich jetzt noch? Wie könnt ihr da zu mir sagen: Was ist los? 25 Die Daniter entgegneten ihm: Lass deine Stimme nicht bei uns hören, sonst fallen erbitterte Leute über euch her und du nimmst dir und deinem Haus selbst das Leben. 26 Dann zogen die Daniter auf ihrem Weg weiter. Micha aber sah ein, dass sie stärker waren als er, kehrte um und ging nach Hause zurück.

Eroberung von Lajisch und Gründung von Dan

27 Sie aber hatten genommen, was Micha angefertigt hatte, samt dem Priester, den er hatte, und sie überfielen Lajisch, ein ruhiges und friedliches Volk. Sie erschlugen die Leute mit scharfem Schwert und steckten die Stadt in Brand. (Jos 19,47) 28 Niemand kam zu Hilfe; denn die Stadt lag weit entfernt von Sidon und hatte mit keinem Menschen zu tun; sie lag im Tal von Bet-Rehob. Die Daniter bauten die Stadt wieder auf und wohnten in ihr. 29 Sie nannten sie Dan, nach dem Namen ihres Stammvaters Dan, der einst dem Israel geboren worden war. Doch früher hatte die Stadt den Namen Lajisch. 30 Die Daniter stellten das Schnitzbild bei sich auf und Jonatan, der Sohn Gerschoms, des Sohnes des Mose, und seine Nachkommen dienten dem Stamm der Daniter als Priester bis zu dem Tag, an dem die Bewohner des Landes in die Gefangenschaft geführt wurden.^[2] (2Kön 15,29) 31 Sie stellten also das Schnitzbild, das Micha gemacht hatte, bei sich auf, die ganze Zeit über, solange es das Gotteshaus in Schilo gab.

The people of Dan make their homes in Laish

1 In those days Israel didn’t have a king. And in those days the tribe of Dan was looking for a place where they could make their homes. They hadn’t been able to take over their own share of land among the tribes of Israel. 2 So the people of Dan sent out five of their leading men from Zorah and Eshtaol. They told the men to look over the land and check it out. Those men did it for all the people of Dan. Those people told the men, ‘Go. Check out the land.’ So they entered the hill country of Ephraim. They went to the house of Micah. That’s where they spent the night. 3 When they came near Micah’s house, they recognised a voice. It was the voice of the young Levite. So they turned off the road and stopped there. They asked him, ‘Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?’ 4 The Levite told them what Micah had done for him. He said, ‘He has hired me. I’m his priest.’ 5 Then they said to him, ‘Please ask God for advice. Try to find out whether we’ll have success on our journey.’ 6 The priest answered them, ‘Go in peace. The LORD is pleased with your journey.’ 7 So the five men left. They came to Laish. There they saw that the people felt secure. They were living in safety. Like the people in Sidon, they were at peace. Their land had everything they needed. Things were going very well for them. They lived a long way from the people of Sidon. And they didn’t think they would ever need help from anyone else. 8 The men returned to Zorah and Eshtaol. Their people asked them, ‘What did you find out?’ 9 They answered, ‘Come on! Let’s attack them! We’ve seen the land, and it is very good. Aren’t you going to do something? Don’t wait any longer. Go there and take it over. 10 When you get there, you will find people who aren’t expecting anything bad to happen to them. Their land has plenty of room. God has handed it over to you. It’s a land that has everything you will ever need.’ 11 So 600 men from the tribe of Dan started out from Zorah and Eshtaol. They were prepared for battle. 12 On their way they set up camp. Their camp was near Kiriath Jearim in Judah. That’s why the place is called Mahaneh Dan to this day. It’s west of Kiriath Jearim. 13 From there they went to the hill country of Ephraim. They came to Micah’s house. 14 Then the five men who had looked over the land of Laish spoke to the other members of their tribe. They said, ‘Don’t you know that one of these houses has a sacred linen apron in it? Some statues of family gods are there. That house also has another statue of a god covered with silver. Now you know what to do.’ 15 So they turned off the road and stopped there. They went to the house of the young Levite. He was at Micah’s place. They greeted the young man. 16 The 600 men from Dan stood at the entrance of the gate. They were prepared for battle. 17 The five men who had looked over the land went inside. They took the statue covered with silver. They also took the family gods and the linen apron. During that time, the priest stood at the entrance of the gate. The 600 men stood there with him. They were prepared for battle. 18 When the five men went into Micah’s house and took all those things, the priest spoke to them. He asked, ‘What are you doing?’ 19 They answered him, ‘Be quiet! Don’t say a word. Come with us. Be our father and priest. You can serve a whole tribe and family group in Israel as our priest. Isn’t that better than serving just one man’s family?’ 20 The priest was very pleased. He took the linen apron and the family gods. He also took the statue of the god that was covered with silver. Then the priest left with the people. 21 They put their little children and their livestock in front of them. They also put everything else they owned in front of them. And they turned and went on their way. 22 The men who lived near Micah were called together. Then they left and caught up with the people of Dan. That’s because Dan’s people hadn’t gone very far from Micah’s house. 23 Those who lived near Micah shouted at them. The people of Dan turned round and asked Micah, ‘What’s the matter with you? Why did you call out your men to fight against us?’ 24 He replied, ‘You took away the gods I made. And you took away my priest. What do I have left? So how can you ask, “What’s the matter with you?” ’ 25 The people of Dan answered, ‘Don’t argue with us. Some of the men may get angry and attack you. Then you and your family will lose your lives.’ 26 So the people of Dan went on their way. Micah saw that they were too strong for him. So he turned round and went back home. 27 The people of Dan took what Micah had made. They also took his priest. They continued on their way to Laish. They went there to fight against a people who were at peace and secure. The people of Dan struck them down with their swords. They burned down their city. 28 No one could save those people and their city. They lived a long way from Sidon. And they didn’t think they would ever need help from anyone else. Their city was located in a valley near Beth Rehob. The people of Dan rebuilt the city. Then they made their homes there. 29 They named it Dan. That’s because they traced their family line back to Dan. He was a son of Israel. The city used to be called Laish. 30 There the people of Dan set up for themselves the statue of the god that was covered with silver. Jonathan and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan. Jonathan was the son of Gershom, the son of Moses. Jonathan and his sons were priests until the time when the land was captured. 31 The people of Dan continued to use the statue Micah had made. They used it during the whole time the house of God was in Shiloh.
