1 Da nahm Samuel den Ölkrug und goss Saul das Öl auf das Haupt, küsste ihn und sagte: Hiermit hat der HERR dich zum Fürsten über sein Erbe gesalbt. (1Sam 16,13; 2Sam 2,4; 2Sam 5,3) 2 Wenn du jetzt von mir weggehst, wirst du beim Grab der Rahel in Zelzach im Gebiet von Benjamin zwei Männer treffen und sie werden zu dir sagen: Die Eselinnen, nach denen du auf der Suche bist, sind gefunden worden. Doch denkt dein Vater nicht mehr an die Sache mit den Eselinnen, sondern macht sich Sorgen um euch und sagt: Was kann ich nur wegen meines Sohnes unternehmen? (1Mo 25,19) 3 Wenn du dann von dort weiterziehst und zur Tabor-Terebinthe kommst, werden dir dort drei Männer begegnen, die zu Gott nach Bet-El hinaufziehen. Einer trägt ein Böckchen, einer trägt drei Laib Brot und einer trägt einen Schlauch Wein. (1Mo 28,22) 4 Sie werden dich grüßen und dir zwei Brote geben; die sollst du von ihnen annehmen. 5 Danach wirst du nach Gibeat-Elohim kommen, wo die Vorposten der Philister stehen. Wenn du dort in die Stadt hineingehst, wirst du eine Schar von Propheten treffen, die von der Kulthöhe herabkommen, und vor ihnen wird Harfe, Handpauke, Flöte und Leier gespielt. Sie selbst sind in prophetischer Verzückung. (1Sam 13,3; 2Kön 3,15) 6 Dann wird der Geist des HERRN über dich kommen und du wirst wie sie in Verzückung geraten und in einen anderen Menschen verwandelt werden. (4Mo 11,25; 1Sam 19,20) 7 Wenn du aber all diese Zeichen erlebst, dann tu, was sich gerade ergibt; denn Gott ist mit dir. (Ri 6,36) 8 Hernach geh mir voraus nach Gilgal hinab! Ich werde dann bereits auf dem Weg zu dir sein, um Brandopfer darzubringen und Heilsopfer zu schlachten. Sieben Tage musst du warten, bis ich zu dir komme. Dann werde ich dir verkünden, was du tun sollst. (1Sam 11,14; 1Sam 13,8) 9 Als sich Saul nun umwandte, um von Samuel wegzugehen, verwandelte Gott sein Herz. Und noch am gleichen Tag trafen alle diese Zeichen ein. 10 Als sie nach Gibea gelangten, kam ihnen tatsächlich eine Schar von Propheten entgegen. Der Geist Gottes kam über Saul und Saul geriet mitten unter ihnen in prophetische Verzückung. (1Sam 16,13; 1Sam 19,20) 11 Alle, die ihn von früher kannten, sahen, wie er zusammen mit den Propheten in Verzückung war. Die Leute sagten zueinander: Was ist denn nur mit dem Sohn des Kisch geschehen? Ist auch Saul unter den Propheten? 12 Einer von dort erwiderte: Wer ist denn schon deren Vater? So ist das Sprichwort entstanden: Ist denn auch Saul unter den Propheten? (1Sam 19,24; 2Kön 2,12) 13 Als die Verzückung zu Ende war, kam er zur Kulthöhe. 14 Der Onkel Sauls fragte ihn und seinen Knecht: Wo seid ihr denn gewesen? Er antwortete: Wir waren weg, um die Eselinnen zu suchen. Als wir aber sahen, dass sie nirgends waren, gingen wir zu Samuel. (1Sam 14,50) 15 Sauls Onkel sagte: Erzähl mir doch, was Samuel euch gesagt hat! 16 Saul antwortete seinem Onkel: Er hat uns mit Bestimmtheit gesagt, dass die Eselinnen gefunden worden sind. Die Sache mit dem Königtum aber, von der Samuel gesprochen hatte, erzählte er ihm nicht.

Entscheidung durch das Los

17 Samuel rief das Volk zum HERRN nach Mizpa zusammen. (1Sam 7,5) 18 Er sagte zu den Israeliten: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ich habe Israel aus Ägypten heraufgeführt, ich habe euch aus der Hand der Ägypter befreit und aus der Hand all der Königreiche, die euch bedrängt haben. (1Sam 12,8) 19 Ihr aber habt heute euren Gott verworfen, der euer Retter in allen Nöten und Bedrängnissen war, und ihr habt gesagt: Nein, du sollst einen König bei uns einsetzen. Stellt euch jetzt also vor dem HERRN auf nach euren Stämmen und Tausendschaften.^[1] (1Sam 8,7; Hos 13,10) 20 Und Samuel ließ alle Stämme Israels antreten. Das Los fiel auf den Stamm Benjamin. (Jos 7,14) 21 Darauf ließ er den Stamm Benjamin nach seinen Sippen antreten und das Los fiel auf die Sippe Matri. Und schließlich fiel das Los auf Saul, den Sohn des Kisch. Man suchte ihn, fand ihn aber nicht. (1Sam 14,40) 22 Sie befragten noch einmal den HERRN: Ist noch jemand hierhergekommen? Der HERR antwortete: Ja, aber er hat sich beim Tross versteckt. (1Sam 23,2) 23 Sie liefen hin und holten ihn von dort. Als er mitten unter das Volk trat, überragte er alle anderen um Haupteslänge. 24 Und Samuel sagte zum ganzen Volk: Habt ihr gesehen, wen der HERR erwählt hat? Keiner ist ihm gleich im ganzen Volk. Da jubelte das ganze Volk und sagte: Es lebe der König! (2Sam 6,21; 2Sam 16,16) 25 Samuel machte dem Volk das Königsrecht bekannt, schrieb es in ein Buch und legte das Buch vor dem HERRN nieder. Dann entließ Samuel das ganze Volk, jeden in sein Haus. (5Mo 17,14; 1Sam 8,11) 26 Auch Saul ging in sein Haus nach Gibea. Und mit ihm zog eine Schar von Männern, deren Herz Gott berührt hatte. (1Sam 15,34) 27 Niederträchtige Menschen aber sagten: Was kann uns der schon helfen? Sie verachteten ihn und brachten ihm kein Geschenk. Er aber tat, als merkte er es nicht. (1Sam 11,12; 1Kön 10,25)

1 Then Samuel took a bottle of olive oil. He poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him. He said, ‘The LORD has anointed you to be the king of his people. 2 When you leave me today, you will meet two men. They will be near Rachel’s tomb at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They’ll say to you, “The donkeys you have been looking for have been found. Now your father has stopped thinking about them. Instead, he’s worried about you. He’s asking, ‘What can I do to find my son?’ ” 3 ‘You will go on from Zelzah until you come to the large tree at Tabor. Three men will meet you there. They’ll be on their way up to Bethel to worship God. One of them will be carrying three young goats. Another will be carrying three loaves of bread. A third will be carrying a bottle of wine. It will be a bottle made out of animal skin. 4 The men will greet you. They’ll offer you two loaves of bread. You will accept the loaves from them. 5 ‘After that, you will go to Gibeah of God. Some Philistine soldiers are stationed there. As you approach the town, you will meet a group of prophets. They’ll be coming down from the high place where they worship. People will be playing lyres, tambourines, flutes and harps at the head of the group. The prophets will be prophesying. 6 The Spirit of the LORD will come powerfully on you. Then you will prophesy along with them. You will become a different person. 7 All these things will happen. Then do what you want to do. God is with you. 8 ‘Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. You can be sure that I’ll come down to you there. I’ll come and sacrifice burnt offerings and friendship offerings. But you must wait there for seven days until I come to you. Then I’ll tell you what to do.’

Saul becomes king of Israel

9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart. All these things happened that day. 10 When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met Saul. Then the Spirit of God came powerfully on him. He prophesied along with them. 11 Those who had known Saul before saw him prophesying with the prophets. They asked one another, ‘What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also one of the prophets?’ 12 A man who lived in Gibeah answered, ‘Yes, he is. In fact, he’s their leader.’ That’s why people say, ‘Is Saul also one of the prophets?’ 13 After Saul stopped prophesying, he went to the high place to worship. 14 Later, Saul’s uncle spoke to him and his servant. He asked, ‘Where have you been?’ ‘Looking for the donkeys,’ Saul said. ‘But we couldn’t find them. So we went to Samuel.’ 15 Saul’s uncle said, ‘Tell me what Samuel said to you.’ 16 Saul replied, ‘He told us the donkeys had been found.’ But Saul didn’t tell his uncle that Samuel had said he would become king. 17 Samuel sent a message to the Israelites. He told them to meet with the LORD at Mizpah. 18 He said to them, ‘The LORD is the God of Israel. He says, “Israel, I brought you up out of Egypt. I saved you from their power. I also saved you from the power of all the kingdoms that had treated you badly.” 19 But now you have turned your backs on your God. He saves you out of all your trouble and suffering. In spite of that, you have said, “We refuse to listen. Place a king over us.” So now gather together to meet with the LORD. Do it tribe by tribe and family group by family group.’ 20 Then Samuel made each tribe of Israel come forward. The tribe of Benjamin was chosen by casting lots. 21 Next he made the tribe of Benjamin come forward, family group by family group. Matri’s group was chosen. Finally Saul, the son of Kish, was chosen. But when people looked for him, they realised he wasn’t there. 22 They needed more help from the LORD. So they asked him, ‘Has the man come here yet?’ The LORD said, ‘Yes. He has hidden himself among the supplies.’ 23 So they ran over there and brought him out. When he stood up, the people saw that he was a head taller than any of them. 24 Samuel spoke to all the people. He said, ‘Look at the man the LORD has chosen! There isn’t anyone like him among all the people.’ Then the people shouted, ‘May the king live a long time!’ 25 Samuel explained to the people the rights and duties of the king who ruled over them. He wrote them down in a book. He placed it in front of the LORD in the holy tent. Then he sent the people away. He sent each of them to their own homes. 26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah. Some brave men whose hearts God had touched went with Saul. 27 But some people who wanted to stir up trouble said, ‘How can this fellow save us?’ They looked down on him. They didn’t bring him any gifts. But Saul kept quiet about it.
