Abraham und Lot

1 Abram zog von Ägypten in den Negeb hinauf, er und seine Frau mit allem, was ihm gehörte, und mit ihm auch Lot. 2 Abram hatte einen sehr ansehnlichen Besitz an Vieh, Silber und Gold. 3 Er ging von einem Lagerplatz zum anderen weiter, vom Negeb bis nach Bet-El, bis zu der Stätte, an der anfangs sein Zelt gestanden hatte, zwischen Bet-El und Ai, (1Mo 12,8) 4 der Stätte, an der er früher den Altar errichtet hatte. Dort rief Abram den Namen des HERRN an. 5 Auch Lot, der mit Abram ging, besaß Schafe und Ziegen, Rinder und Zelte. 6 Das Land reichte nicht hin, dass sich beide nebeneinander darin hätten ansiedeln können; denn ihr Besitz war zu groß und so konnten sie sich nicht miteinander niederlassen. 7 So entstand Streit zwischen den Hirten der Herde Abrams und den Hirten der Herde Lots; auch siedelten damals noch die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter im Land. 8 Da sagte Abram zu Lot: Zwischen mir und dir, zwischen meinen und deinen Hirten soll es keinen Streit geben; wir sind doch Brüder. 9 Liegt nicht das ganze Land vor dir? Trenn dich also von mir! Wenn du nach links willst, gehe ich nach rechts; wenn du nach rechts willst, gehe ich nach links. 10 Lot erhob seine Augen und sah, dass die ganze Jordangegend überall bewässert war. Bevor der HERR Sodom und Gomorra vernichtete, war sie bis Zoar hin wie der Garten des HERRN, wie das Land Ägypten. (1Mo 19,24) 11 Da wählte sich Lot die ganze Jordangegend aus. Lot brach nach Osten auf und sie trennten sich voneinander. 12 Abram ließ sich im Land Kanaan nieder, während Lot sich in den Städten jener Gegend niederließ und seine Zelte bis Sodom hin aufschlug. 13 Die Männer von Sodom aber waren sehr böse und sündigten vor dem HERRN. 14 Nachdem sich Lot von Abram getrennt hatte, sprach der HERR zu Abram: Erheb deine Augen und schau von der Stelle, an der du stehst, nach Norden und Süden, nach Osten und Westen! 15 Das ganze Land nämlich, das du siehst, will ich dir und deinen Nachkommen für immer geben. (1Mo 17,8; 1Mo 26,3; 1Mo 28,13) 16 Ich mache deine Nachkommen zahlreich wie den Staub auf der Erde. Nur wer den Staub auf der Erde zählen kann, wird auch deine Nachkommen zählen können. (1Mo 28,14; 4Mo 23,10) 17 Mach dich auf, durchzieh das Land in seiner Länge und Breite; denn dir werde ich es geben. 18 Da zog Abram mit seinen Zelten weiter und ließ sich bei den Eichen von Mamre in Hebron nieder. Dort baute er dem HERRN einen Altar. (1Mo 12,8)

Abram and Lot separate

1 Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev Desert. He took his wife and everything he had. Lot went with him. 2 Abram had become very rich. He had a lot of livestock and silver and gold. 3 Abram left the Negev Desert. He went from place to place until he came to Bethel. Then he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier. 4 There he called on the name of the LORD at the altar he had built. 5 Lot was moving around with Abram. Lot also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 But the land didn’t have enough food for both Abram and Lot. They had large herds and many servants, so they weren’t able to stay together. 7 The people who took care of Abram’s herds and those who took care of Lot’s herds began to argue. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. 8 So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not argue with each other. The people taking care of your herds and those taking care of mine shouldn’t argue with one another either. After all, we’re part of the same family. 9 Isn’t the whole land in front of you? Let’s separate. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right. If you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.’ 10 Lot looked around. He saw that the whole River Jordan valley towards the town of Zoar had plenty of water. It was like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. 11 So Lot chose the whole River Jordan valley for himself. Then he started out towards the east. The two men separated. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan. Lot lived among the cities of the River Jordan valley. He set up his tents near Sodom. 13 The people of Sodom were evil. They were sinning greatly against the LORD. 14 The LORD spoke to Abram after Lot had left him. He said, ‘Look around from where you are. Look north and south, east and west. 15 I will give you all the land you see. I will give it for ever to you and your family who comes after you. 16 I will make them like the dust of the earth. Can dust be counted? If it can, then your family can be counted. 17 Go! Walk through the land. See how long and wide it is. I am giving it to you.’ 18 So Abram went to live near the large trees of Mamre at Hebron. There he pitched his tents and built an altar to honour the LORD.
