1Nach langer Zeit - es war im dritten Jahr - erging das Wort des HERRN an Elija: Geh und zeig dich dem Ahab! Ich will Regen auf die Erde senden. (5Mo 11,14; Jer 5,24; Jer 10,13)2Da ging Elija hin, um sich Ahab zu zeigen. Die Hungersnot war groß in Samaria.3Daher rief Ahab den Palastvorsteher Obadja. Dieser war sehr gottesfürchtig.4Als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN ausrottete, hatte Obadja hundert von ihnen beiseitegenommen, sie zu je fünfzig in einer Höhle verborgen und mit Brot und Wasser versorgt.5Ahab befahl nun Obadja: Geh an alle Wasserquellen und Bäche im Land! Vielleicht finden wir Gras, damit wir Pferde und Maultiere am Leben erhalten können und nicht einen Teil des Viehs töten müssen.6Sie teilten sich das Land, um es zu durchstreifen. Ahab ging in die eine und Obadja in die andere Richtung.7Als nun Obadja unterwegs war, kam ihm Elija entgegen. Obadja erkannte ihn, warf sich vor ihm nieder und rief: Bist du es, mein Herr Elija?8Dieser antwortete: Ich bin es. Geh und melde deinem Herrn: Elija ist da.9Obadja entgegnete: Was habe ich mir zuschulden kommen lassen, dass du deinen Knecht an Ahab ausliefern und dem Tod preisgeben willst?10So wahr der HERR, dein Gott, lebt: Es gibt kein Volk und kein Reich, wo mein Herr dich nicht hätte suchen lassen. Und wenn man sagte: Er ist nicht hier, dann ließ er dieses Reich oder Volk schwören, dass man dich nicht gefunden habe.11Und jetzt befiehlst du: Geh und melde deinem Herrn: Elija ist da.12Wenn ich nun von dir weggehe, könnte ja der Geist des HERRN dich an einen Ort tragen, den ich nicht kenne. Käme ich dann zu Ahab, um dich zu melden, und könnte er dich nicht finden, so würde er mich töten. Dabei hat dein Knecht doch von Jugend auf den HERRN gefürchtet. (2Kön 2,16; Hes 3,12; Hes 11,1)13Hat man dir denn nicht berichtet, was ich getan habe, als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN umbrachte? Ich habe doch hundert von ihnen, je fünfzig in einer Höhle, verborgen und mit Brot und Wasser versorgt.14Und nun befiehlst du: Geh und melde deinem Herrn: Elija ist da. Ahab würde mich töten.15Doch Elija antwortete: So wahr der HERR der Heerscharen lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: Heute noch werde ich ihm vor die Augen treten.16Obadja kam zu Ahab und brachte ihm die Nachricht. Ahab ging Elija entgegen.17Sobald er ihn sah, rief er aus: Bist du es, Verderber Israels?18Elija entgegnete: Nicht ich habe Israel ins Verderben gestürzt, sondern du und das Haus deines Vaters, weil ihr die Gebote des HERRN übertreten habt und du den Baalen nachgelaufen bist.19Doch schick jetzt Boten aus und versammle mir ganz Israel auf dem Karmel, auch die vierhundertfünfzig Propheten des Baal und die vierhundert Propheten der Aschera, die vom Tisch Isebels essen! (2Kön 10,19)
Entscheidung auf dem Karmel
20Ahab schickte in ganz Israel umher und ließ die Propheten auf dem Karmel zusammenkommen.21Und Elija trat vor das ganze Volk und rief: Wie lange noch schwankt ihr nach zwei Seiten? Wenn der HERR der wahre Gott ist, dann folgt ihm! Wenn aber Baal es ist, dann folgt diesem! Doch das Volk gab ihm keine Antwort. (Jos 24,15)22Da sagte Elija zum Volk: Ich allein bin als Prophet des HERRN übrig geblieben; die Propheten des Baal aber sind vierhundertfünfzig. (1Kön 19,10)23Man gebe uns zwei Stiere. Sie sollen sich einen auswählen, ihn zerteilen und auf das Holz legen, aber kein Feuer anzünden. Ich werde den andern zubereiten, auf das Holz legen und kein Feuer anzünden.24Dann sollt ihr den Namen eures Gottes anrufen und ich werde den Namen des HERRN anrufen. Der Gott, der mit Feuer antwortet, ist der wahre Gott. Da rief das ganze Volk: Der Vorschlag ist gut.25Nun sagte Elija zu den Propheten des Baal: Wählt ihr zuerst den einen Stier aus und bereitet ihn zu; denn ihr seid die Mehrheit. Ruft dann den Namen eures Gottes an, entzündet aber kein Feuer!26Sie nahmen den Stier, den er ihnen überließ, und bereiteten ihn zu. Dann riefen sie vom Morgen bis zum Mittag den Namen des Baal an und schrien: Baal, erhöre uns! Doch es kam kein Laut und niemand gab Antwort. Sie tanzten hüpfend um den Altar, den man gemacht hatte.[1] (Hos 11,7)27Um die Mittagszeit verspottete sie Elija und sagte: Ruft lauter! Er ist doch Gott. Er könnte beschäftigt sein, könnte beiseitegegangen oder verreist sein. Vielleicht schläft er und wacht dann auf.28Sie schrien nun mit lauter Stimme. Nach ihrem Brauch ritzten sie sich mit Schwertern und Lanzen wund, bis das Blut an ihnen herabfloss. (Hos 7,14)29Als der Mittag vorüber war, verfielen sie in Raserei und das dauerte bis zu der Zeit, da man das Speiseopfer darzubringen pflegt. Doch es kam kein Laut, keine Antwort, keine Erhörung.30Nun forderte Elija das ganze Volk auf: Tretet her zu mir! Sie kamen und Elija baute den zerstörten Altar des HERRN wieder auf.31Er nahm zwölf Steine, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Söhne Jakobs, zu dem der HERR gesagt hatte: Israel soll dein Name sein. (1Mo 32,29; 1Mo 35,10)32Er fügte die Steine zu einem Altar für den Namen des HERRN, zog rings um den Altar einen Graben und grenzte eine Fläche ab, die zwei Sea Saat hätte aufnehmen können.33Sodann schichtete er das Holz auf, zerteilte den Stier und legte ihn auf das Holz.34Nun befahl er: Füllt vier Krüge mit Wasser und gießt es über das Brandopfer und das Holz! Hierauf sagte er: Tut es noch einmal! Und sie wiederholten es. Dann sagte er: Tut es zum dritten Mal! Und sie taten es zum dritten Mal.35Das Wasser lief rings um den Altar. Auch den Graben füllte er mit Wasser.36Zu der Zeit nun, da man das Speiseopfer darzubringen pflegt, trat der Prophet Elija an den Altar und rief: HERR, Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels, heute soll man erkennen, dass du Gott bist in Israel, dass ich dein Knecht bin und all das in deinem Auftrag tue.37Erhöre mich, HERR, erhöre mich! Dieses Volk soll erkennen, dass du, HERR, der wahre Gott bist und dass du sein Herz zur Umkehr wendest.38Da kam das Feuer des HERRN herab und verzehrte das Brandopfer, das Holz, die Steine und die Erde. Auch das Wasser im Graben leckte es auf. (4Mo 11,1)39Das ganze Volk sah es, warf sich auf das Angesicht nieder und rief: Der HERR ist Gott, der HERR ist Gott!40Elija aber befahl ihnen: Ergreift die Propheten des Baal! Keiner von ihnen soll entkommen. Man ergriff sie und Elija ließ sie zum Bach Kischon hinabführen und dort töten.
Ende der Dürre
41Dann sagte Elija zu Ahab: Geh hinauf, iss und trink; denn das Rauschen des Regens ist schon hörbar.42Während Ahab wegging, um zu essen und zu trinken, stieg Elija zur Höhe des Karmel empor, kauerte sich auf den Boden nieder und legte seinen Kopf zwischen die Knie.43Dann befahl er seinem Diener: Geh hinauf und schau auf das Meer hinaus! Dieser ging hinauf schaute hinaus und meldete: Es ist nichts zu sehen. Elija befahl: Geh sieben Mal hinauf!44Beim siebten Mal meldete der Diener: Eine Wolke, klein wie eine Menschenhand, steigt aus dem Meer herauf. Darauf sagte Elija: Geh hinauf und sag zu Ahab: Spanne an und fahr hinab, damit der Regen dich nicht aufhält! (Lk 12,54)45Es dauerte nicht lange, da verfinsterte sich der Himmel durch Sturm und Wolken und es fiel ein starker Regen. Ahab bestieg den Wagen und fuhr nach Jesreel.46Über Elija aber kam die Hand des HERRN. Er gürtete sich und lief vor Ahab her bis dorthin, wo der Weg nach Jesreel abzweigt. (2Kön 3,15; Hes 1,3)
1It was now three years since it had rained. A message came to Elijah from the LORD. He said, ‘Go. Speak to Ahab. Then I will send rain on the land.’2So Elijah went to speak to Ahab. There wasn’t enough food in Samaria. The people there were very hungry.3Ahab had sent for Obadiah. He was in charge of Ahab’s palace. Obadiah had great respect for the LORD.4Ahab’s wife Jezebel had been killing off the LORD’s prophets. So Obadiah had hidden 100 prophets in two caves. He had put 50 in each cave. He had supplied them with food and water.5Ahab had said to Obadiah, ‘Go through the land. Go to all the valleys and springs of water. Maybe we can find some grass there. It will keep the horses and mules alive. Then we won’t have to kill any of our animals.’6So they decided where each of them would look. Ahab went in one direction. Obadiah went in another.7As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognised him. He bowed down to the ground. He said, ‘My master Elijah! Is it really you?’8‘Yes’, he replied. ‘Go and tell your master Ahab, “Elijah is here.” ’9‘What have I done wrong?’ asked Obadiah. ‘Why are you handing me over to Ahab to be put to death?10My master has sent people to look for you everywhere. There isn’t a nation or kingdom where he hasn’t sent someone to look for you. Suppose a nation or kingdom would claim you weren’t there. Then Ahab would make them give their word that they couldn’t find you. And that’s just as sure as the LORD your God is alive.11But now you are telling me to go to my master. You want me to say, “Elijah is here.”12But the Spirit of the LORD might carry you away when I leave you. Then I won’t know where you are. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he’ll kill me. But I’ve worshipped the LORD ever since I was young.13My master, haven’t you heard what I did? Jezebel was killing the LORD’s prophets. But I hid 100 of them in two caves. I put 50 in each cave. I supplied them with food and water.14And now you are telling me to go to my master Ahab. You want me to say to him, “Elijah is here.” Ahab will kill me!’15Elijah said, ‘I serve the LORD who rules over all. You can be sure that he lives. And you can be just as sure that I will speak to Ahab today.’
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16Obadiah went back to Ahab. He told Ahab that Elijah wanted to see him. So Ahab went to where Elijah was.17When he saw Elijah, he said to him, ‘Is that you? You are always stirring up trouble in Israel.’18‘I haven’t made trouble for Israel,’ Elijah replied. ‘But you and your father’s family have. You have turned away from the LORD’s commands. You have followed gods that are named Baal.19Now send for people from all over Israel. Tell them to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the 450 prophets of the god named Baal. Also bring the 400 prophets of the female god named Asherah. All of them eat at Jezebel’s table.’20So Ahab sent that message all through Israel. He gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel.21Elijah went there and stood in front of the people. He said, ‘How long will it take you to make up your minds? If the LORD is the one and only God, worship him. But if Baal is the one and only God, worship him.’ The people didn’t say anything.22Then Elijah said to them, ‘I’m the only one of the LORD’s prophets left. But Baal has 450 prophets.23Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves. Let them cut it into pieces. Then let them put it on the wood. But don’t let them set fire to it. I’ll prepare the other bull. I’ll put it on the wood. But I won’t set fire to it.24Then you pray to your god. And I’ll pray to the LORD. The god who answers by sending fire down is the one and only God.’ Then all the people said, ‘What you are saying is good.’25Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, ‘Choose one of the bulls. There are many of you. So prepare your bull first. Pray to your god. But don’t light the fire.’26So they prepared the bull they had been given. They prayed to Baal from morning until noon. ‘Baal! Answer us!’ they shouted. But there wasn’t any reply. No one answered. Then they danced around the altar they had made.27At noon Elijah began to tease them. ‘Shout louder!’ he said. ‘I’m sure Baal is a god! Perhaps he has too much to think about. Or maybe he has gone to the toilet. Or perhaps he’s away on a trip. Maybe he’s sleeping. You might have to wake him up.’28So they shouted louder. They cut themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed. That’s what they usually did when things really looked hopeless.29It was now past noon. The prophets of Baal continued to prophesy with all their might. They did it until the time came to offer the evening sacrifice. But there wasn’t any reply. No one answered. No one paid any attention.30Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come here to me.’ So they went to him. He rebuilt the altar of the LORD. It had been torn down.31Elijah got 12 stones. There was one for each tribe in the family line of Jacob. The LORD’s message had come to Jacob. It had said, ‘Your name will be Israel.’32Elijah used the stones to build an altar to honour the LORD. He dug a ditch around it. The ditch was large enough to hold 10 kilograms of seeds.33He arranged the wood for the fire. He cut the bull into pieces. He placed the pieces on the wood. Then he said to some of the people, ‘Fill four large jars with water. Pour it on the offering and the wood.’ So they did.34‘Do it again,’ he said. So they did it again. ‘Do it a third time,’ he ordered. And they did it the third time.35The water ran down around the altar. It even filled the ditch.36When it was time to offer the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward. He prayed, ‘LORD, you are the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. Today let everyone know that you are God in Israel. Let them know I’m your servant. Let them know I’ve done all these things because you commanded me to.37Answer me. LORD, answer me. Then these people will know that you are the one and only God. They’ll know that you are turning their hearts back to you again.’38The fire of the LORD came down. It burned up the sacrifice. It burned up the wood and the stones and the soil. It even dried up the water in the ditch.39All the people saw it. Then they fell down flat with their faces towards the ground. They cried out, ‘The LORD is the one and only God! The LORD is the one and only God!’40Then Elijah commanded them, ‘Grab the prophets of Baal. Don’t let a single one of them get away!’ So they grabbed them. Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley. There he had them put to death.41Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go. Eat and drink. I can hear the sound of a heavy rain.’42So Ahab went off to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel. He bent down towards the ground. Then he put his face between his knees.43‘Go and look towards the sea,’ he told his servant. So he went up and looked. ‘I don’t see anything there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’44The seventh time the servant said, ‘I see a cloud. It’s as small as a man’s hand. It’s coming up over the sea.’ Elijah said, ‘Go to Ahab. Tell him, “Tie your chariot to your horse. Go down to Jezreel before the rain stops you.” ’45Black clouds filled the sky. The wind came up, and a heavy rain began to fall. Ahab rode off to Jezreel.46The power of the LORD came on Elijah. He tucked his coat into his belt. And he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
