Jiftachs Sieg über die Efraimiter und sein Tod

1 Die Männer aus Efraim wurden aufgeboten; sie zogen hinüber nach Zafon und sagten zu Jiftach: Warum bist du hinübergezogen, um gegen die Ammoniter zu kämpfen, und hast uns nicht aufgefordert, mit dir zu ziehen? Wir werden dir dein Haus über dem Kopf anzünden. (Ri 8,1) 2 Jiftach sagte zu ihnen: Ich selbst und mein Volk lagen mit den Ammonitern in heftigem Streit. Ich habe euch gerufen, aber ihr habt mich nicht aus ihrer Hand gerettet. 3 Als ich nun sah, dass du kein Retter warst, nahm ich mein Leben in meine Hand und zog hinüber gegen die Ammoniter und der HERR gab sie in meine Hand. Warum seid ihr nun heute zu mir heraufgezogen, um Krieg mit mir anzufangen? 4 Darauf sammelte Jiftach alle Männer aus Gilead und kämpfte gegen Efraim und die Männer aus Gilead schlugen Efraim. Die Efraimiter hatten gesagt: Ihr seid Flüchtlinge aus Efraim; Gilead liegt ja mitten in Efraim, mitten in Manasse. 5 Gilead schnitt Efraim die Jordanfurten ab. Und wenn die Flüchtlinge aus Efraim sagten: Ich will hinüber!, fragten ihn die Männer aus Gilead: Bist du ein Efraimiter? Wenn er Nein sagte, 6 forderten sie ihn auf: Sag doch einmal Schibbolet! Sagte er dann Sibbolet, weil er es nicht richtig aussprechen konnte, ergriffen sie ihn und machten ihn dort an den Furten des Jordan nieder. So fielen damals zweiundvierzigtausend Mann aus Efraim. 7 Jiftach richtete Israel sechs Jahre lang. Dann starb Jiftach, der Gileaditer, und wurde in seiner Stadt in Gilead begraben.^[1]

DIE RICHTER IBZAN, ELON UND ABDON

8 Nach ihm richtete Ibzan aus Betlehem Israel. 9 Er hatte dreißig Söhne; dreißig Töchter gab er nach auswärts und dreißig Töchter führte er seinen Söhnen von auswärts zu. Ibzan richtete Israel sieben Jahre lang. 10 Dann starb er und wurde in Betlehem begraben. 11 Nach ihm richtete Elon, der Sebuloniter, Israel; er richtete Israel zehn Jahre lang. 12 Dann starb der Sebuloniter Elon und wurde in Ajalon im Land Sebulon begraben. 13 Nach ihm richtete Abdon, der Sohn Hillels aus Piraton, Israel. 14 Er hatte vierzig Söhne und dreißig Enkel, die auf siebzig Eselshengsten ritten. Er richtete Israel acht Jahre lang. 15 Dann starb Abdon, der Sohn Hillels aus Piraton, und wurde in Piraton, im Land Efraim, auf dem Amalekiterberg begraben.

Jephthah’s Conflict with Ephraim

1 The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.” (Ri 8,1) 2 And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people had a great dispute with the Ammonites, and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand. 3 And when I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?” (1Sam 19,5; 1Sam 28,21; Hi 13,14; Ps 119,109)

4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.” (1Sam 25,10) 5 And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” (Ri 3,28) 6 they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 of the Ephraimites fell. (Ri 12,5) 7 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.^[1]

Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon

8 After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. 9 He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem. 11 After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years. 12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun. 13 After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
