Psalm 60

English Standard Version

1 To the choirmaster: according to Shushan Eduth. A Miktam[1] of David; for instruction; when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt. O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses; you have been angry; oh, restore us. (De 31:19; 2Sa 5:20; 2Sa 8:3; 2Sa 8:13; 2Sa 10:16; 1Ch 18:3; 1Ch 18:12; Ps 16:1; Ps 44:9; Ps 60:10; Ps 80:1; Ps 80:3)2 You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open; repair its breaches, for it totters. (2Ch 7:14)3 You have made your people see hard things; you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger. (Job 21:20; Ps 71:20; Isa 51:17; Isa 51:22)4 You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow.[2] (Ps 20:5; Pr 22:21; Isa 5:26; Isa 11:12; Isa 13:2)5 That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer us! (De 33:12; Ps 108:6; Jer 11:15)6 God has spoken in his holiness:[3] “With exultation I will divide up Shechem and portion out the Vale of Succoth. (Ge 12:6; Ge 33:17; Ge 33:18; Jos 1:6; Jos 13:27; Jos 17:7; Ps 89:35; Am 4:2)7 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet; Judah is my scepter. (Ge 49:10; De 33:17; Jos 13:31; Ps 140:7)8 Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”[4] (2Sa 8:1; 2Sa 8:2; Mt 3:11)9 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? (2Sa 8:14)10 Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go forth, O God, with our armies. (Ps 44:9; Ps 60:1)11 Oh, grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! (Ps 146:3)12 With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.
