1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. (Mt 28:1; Mr 1:32; Mr 15:40; Lu 23:56; Lu 24:1; Joh 19:39; Joh 20:1)2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” (Mr 15:46)4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. (Mt 27:60)5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. (Da 7:9; Mr 9:3; Mr 9:15; Joh 20:11; Joh 20:12; Ac 1:10; Re 6:11; Re 7:9)6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. (Mr 16:5)7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” (Mr 14:28)8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
1. Some manuscripts end the book with 16:8; others include verses 9–20 immediately after verse 8. At least one manuscript inserts additional material after verse 14; some manuscripts include after verse 8 the following: But they reported briefly to Peter and those with him all that they had been told. And after this, Jesus himself sent out by means of them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. These manuscripts then continue with verses 9–20
[[Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. (Mt 28:9; Lu 8:2; Joh 20:14)10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. (Mt 28:10; Lu 6:25; Lu 24:10; Joh 16:20; Joh 20:18)11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. (Mr 16:16; Lu 24:11)
