1David departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. (2Sa 23:13; 1Ch 11:15)2And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,[1] gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him about four hundred men. (Jud 9:4; Jud 11:3; 1Sa 23:13; 1Sa 25:13)3And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay[2] with you, till I know what God will do for me.”4And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.5Then the prophet Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth. Saul Kills the Priests at Nob
6Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. (Ge 21:33; 1Sa 31:13)7And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, (1Sa 8:14)8that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day.” (1Sa 18:3; 1Sa 22:13; 1Sa 23:21)9Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, (1Sa 14:3; 1Sa 21:1; 1Sa 21:7)10and he inquired of the Lord for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.” (Nu 27:21; 1Sa 21:6; 1Sa 21:9; 1Sa 23:2; 1Sa 23:4; 1Sa 30:8; 2Sa 5:19; 2Sa 5:23)11Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king.12And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.”13And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?” (1Sa 22:8; 1Sa 22:10)14Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, and captain over[3] your bodyguard, and honored in your house?15Is today the first time that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, much or little.” (1Sa 22:10; 1Sa 25:36)16And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house.”17And the king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. (2Ki 10:25; 2Ki 11:4; 2Ki 11:6; 2Ch 12:10)18Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. (1Sa 2:31)19And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword. (1Sa 15:3)20But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. (1Sa 23:6; 1Sa 23:9)21And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord.22And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father’s house. (1Sa 21:7)23Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.” (1Ki 2:26)

Ses frères et toute sa famille l'apprirent, et ils descendirent vers lui.2Tous ceux qui se trouvaient dans la détresse, qui avaient des dettes ou qui étaient mécontents se rassemblèrent autour de lui, et il devint leur chef. Ainsi, ce furent environ 400 hommes qui se joignirent à lui.3De là, David se rendit à Mitspé dans le pays de Moab. Il dit au roi de Moab: «Permets donc à mon père et à ma mère de se retirer chez vous jusqu'à ce que je sache ce que Dieu fera de moi.»4Il les conduisit vers le roi de Moab et ils restèrent avec lui tout le temps que David fut dans sa forteresse.5Le prophète Gad dit à David: «Ne reste pas dans la forteresse, va-t'en et retourne sur le territoire de Juda.» David s'en alla et se rendit dans la forêt de Héreth.
Massacre des prêtres de Nob
6Saül apprit que l'on avait des renseignements sur David et sur ses hommes. Il siégeait alors sous un tamaris à Guibea, sur la colline. Il avait sa lance à la main et tous ses serviteurs se tenaient près de lui.7Saül dit aux serviteurs qui se tenaient près de lui: «Ecoutez, Benjaminites! Le fils d'Isaï vous donnera-t-il à tous des champs et des vignes? Fera-t-il de vous tous des chefs de milliers et de centaines?8Sinon, pourquoi avez-vous tous conspiré contre moi, pourquoi n'y a-t-il personne qui m'informe de l'alliance conclue par mon fils avec le fils d'Isaï? Pourquoi n'y a-t-il aucun de vous qui s'inquiète pour moi et qui m'avertisse que mon fils a soulevé mon serviteur contre moi afin qu'il me dresse des embuscades, comme il le fait aujourd'hui?»9Doëg l'Edomite, qui figurait aussi parmi les serviteurs de Saül, répondit: «J'ai vu le fils d'Isaï venir à Nob, vers Achimélec, fils d'Achithub.10Achimélec a consulté l'Eternel pour lui. Il lui a donné des vivres et lui a remis l'épée de Goliath, le Philistin.»11Le roi envoya chercher le prêtre Achimélec, fils d'Achithub, et toute sa famille, les prêtres qui se trouvaient à Nob. Ils se rendirent tous vers le roi.12Saül dit: «Ecoute, fils d'Achithub!» Il répondit: «Oui, mon seigneur!»13Saül lui dit: «Pourquoi avez-vous conspiré contre moi, le fils d'Isaï et toi? Pourquoi lui as-tu donné du pain et une épée, et pourquoi as-tu consulté Dieu pour lui? Ainsi, il s'attaque à moi et me dresse des embuscades, comme il le fait aujourd'hui.»14Achimélec répondit au roi: «Parmi tous tes serviteurs, lequel est aussi fidèle que David? Il est le gendre du roi, il est dévoué à tes ordres et honoré dans ta maison.15Est-ce aujourd'hui que j'ai commencé à consulter Dieu pour lui? Certainement pas! Que le roi ne fasse pas reposer de responsabilité sur moi ni sur qui que ce soit dans ma famille, car moi, ton serviteur, je ne sais absolument rien de cette affaire.»16Le roi rétorqua: «Tu mourras, Achimélec, ainsi que toute ta famille.»17Puis il ordonna aux gardes qui se tenaient près de lui: «Tournez-vous et mettez à mort les prêtres de l'Eternel, car ils sont de mèche avec David. Ils savaient bien qu'il était en fuite et ils ne m'ont pas averti.» Mais les serviteurs du roi ne voulurent pas avancer la main pour frapper les prêtres de l'Eternel.18Alors le roi dit à Doëg: «Tourne-toi et frappe les prêtres.» Doëg l'Edomite se tourna, et ce fut lui qui frappa les prêtres. Il fit mourir ce jour-là 85 hommes qui portaient l'éphod de lin.19Saül frappa encore du tranchant de l'épée Nob, la ville de ces prêtres. Hommes et femmes, enfants et bébés, bœufs, ânes et brebis, tous tombèrent sous le tranchant de l'épée.20Un fils d'Achimélec et petit-fils d'Achithub put s'échapper. Son nom était Abiathar. Il s'enfuit vers David21et lui rapporta que Saül avait tué les prêtres de l'Eternel.22David dit à Abiathar: «Je savais bien, l'autre jour, que Doëg l'Edomite, qui se trouvait là, ne manquerait pas d'informer Saül. C'est moi qui suis responsable de la mort de tous les membres de ta famille.23Reste avec moi, n'aie pas peur, car celui qui en voudra à ta vie en voudra à la mienne. Près de moi tu seras en sécurité.»
