A Man of God Confronts Jeroboam

1 And behold, a man of God came out of Judah by the word of the Lord to Bethel. Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make offerings. (1Ki 12:33; 2Ki 23:17) 2 And the man cried against the altar by the word of the Lord and said, “O altar, altar, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’” (1Ki 13:32; 2Ki 23:15) 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign that the Lord has spoken: ‘Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’” (Jud 6:17) 4 And when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Seize him.” And his hand, which he stretched out against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back to himself. 5 The altar also was torn down, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign that the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. 6 And the king said to the man of God, “Entreat now the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” And the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him and became as it was before. 7 And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.” (1Sa 9:7; 2Ki 5:15) 8 And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place, (Nu 22:18; Nu 24:13; 1Ki 13:16) 9 for so was it commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.

The Prophet’s Disobedience

11 Now an old prophet lived in Bethel. And his sons^[1] came and told him all that the man of God had done that day in Bethel. They also told to their father the words that he had spoken to the king. (1Ki 13:25; 2Ki 23:18) 12 And their father said to them, “Which way did he go?” And his sons showed him the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone. 13 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it. 14 And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?” And he said, “I am.” 15 Then he said to him, “Come home with me and eat bread.” 16 And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, (1Ki 13:8) 17 for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’” (1Ki 20:35; 1Th 4:15) 18 And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’” But he lied to him. 19 So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water. 20 And as they sat at the table, the word of the Lord came to the prophet who had brought him back. 21 And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, 22 but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” 23 And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. (1Ki 20:36) 25 And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where the old prophet lived. (1Ki 13:11) 26 And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.” 27 And he said to his sons, “Saddle the donkey for me.” And they saddled it. 28 And he went and found his body thrown in the road, and the donkey and the lion standing beside the body. The lion had not eaten the body or torn the donkey. 29 And the prophet took up the body of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back to the city^[2] to mourn and to bury him. 30 And he laid the body in his own grave. And they mourned over him, saying, “Alas, my brother!” (Jer 22:18) 31 And after he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave in which the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. (2Ki 23:17) 32 For the saying that he called out by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria shall surely come to pass.” (1Ki 12:31; 1Ki 13:2; 1Ki 16:24; 2Ki 23:16)

33 After this thing Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but made priests for the high places again from among all the people. Any who would, he ordained to be priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin to the house of Jeroboam, so as to cut it off and to destroy it from the face of the earth. (1Ki 12:30; 1Ki 14:10; 1Ki 15:29; 2Ki 17:21)

1 Or, un homme de Dieu arriva de Juda à Béthel, sur l'ordre de l'Eternel, pendant que Jéroboam se tenait près de l'autel pour brûler des parfums. 2 Il cria contre l'autel, sur l'ordre de l'Eternel, et il dit: «Autel! Autel! Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: ‘Un fils naîtra dans la famille de David. Son nom sera Josias. Il offrira en sacrifice sur toi les prêtres des hauts lieux qui brûlent des parfums sur toi, et l'on brûlera sur toi des ossements humains!’» 3 Le même jour il donna un signe en disant: «Voici le signe que c'est l'Eternel qui a parlé: l'autel se fendra et la cendre qui se trouve dessus sera dispersée.» 4 Lorsque le roi entendit la parole que l'homme de Dieu avait criée contre l'autel de Béthel, il avança la main par-dessus l'autel en disant: «Arrêtez-le!» La main que Jéroboam avait tendue contre lui devint alors paralysée et il ne put la ramener à lui. 5 L'autel se fendit et la cendre qui se trouvait dessus fut dispersée, conformément au signe qu'avait donné l'homme de Dieu sur l'ordre de l'Eternel. 6 Alors le roi prit la parole, il dit à l'homme de Dieu: «Implore l'Eternel, ton Dieu, et prie pour moi, afin que je puisse retirer ma main.» L'homme de Dieu implora l'Eternel et le roi put retirer sa main, qui redevint comme avant. 7 Le roi dit à l'homme de Dieu: «Viens avec moi dans mon palais! Tu mangeras et je te donnerai un cadeau.» 8 L'homme de Dieu répondit au roi: «Même si tu me donnais la moitié de ton palais, je ne viendrais pas avec toi. Je ne mangerai rien et je ne boirai rien à cet endroit, 9 car voici l'ordre qui m'a été donné dans une parole de l'Eternel: ‘Tu ne mangeras rien et tu ne boiras rien, et tu ne prendras pas à ton retour le même chemin qu'à l'aller.’» 10 Et il repartit par un autre chemin, il ne prit pas à son retour le chemin par lequel il était venu à Béthel. 11 Or il y avait un vieux prophète qui habitait à Béthel. Ses fils vinrent lui raconter tout ce que l'homme de Dieu avait fait à Béthel ce jour-là ainsi que les paroles qu'il avait dites au roi. Leur récit terminé, 12 leur père leur demanda: «Par quel chemin est-il reparti?» Ses fils avaient vu par quel chemin était reparti l'homme de Dieu venu de Juda. 13 Il leur dit: «Sellez-moi l'âne.» C'est ce qu'ils firent et il monta dessus. 14 Il partit à la poursuite de l'homme de Dieu et le trouva assis sous un térébinthe. Il lui dit: «Es-tu l'homme de Dieu venu de Juda?» Il répondit: «C'est bien moi.» 15 Alors il lui demanda: «Viens avec moi à la maison et tu mangeras un peu.» 16 Mais l'homme de Dieu répondit: «Je ne peux ni revenir en arrière avec toi ni entrer chez toi. Je ne mangerai rien et je ne boirai rien avec toi à cet endroit, 17 car il m'a été dit dans une parole de l'Eternel: ‘Tu ne mangeras rien et tu ne boiras rien là-bas, et tu ne prendras pas à ton retour le même chemin qu'à l'aller.’» 18 L'autre lui répliqua: «Moi aussi, je suis un prophète, comme toi, et un ange m'a parlé de la part de l'Eternel. Il m'a dit: ‘Ramène-le avec toi dans ta maison et qu'il mange et boive.’» Il lui mentait. 19 L'homme de Dieu revint en arrière avec lui, et il mangea et but dans sa maison. 20 Ils étaient installés à table quand la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée au prophète qui l'avait ramené, 21 et il cria à l'homme de Dieu venu de Juda: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Parce que tu t'es rebellé contre l'ordre de l'Eternel et que tu n'as pas respecté le commandement que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'avait donné, 22 parce que tu es revenu en arrière et que tu as mangé et bu à l'endroit même dont il t'avait dit: ‘Tu ne mangeras rien et tu ne boiras rien là-bas’, ton cadavre n'entrera pas dans le tombeau de tes ancêtres.» 23 Puis, quand le prophète qu'il avait ramené eut mangé et bu, il sella l'âne pour lui. 24 L'homme de Dieu repartit et il rencontra en chemin un lion qui le tua. Son cadavre resta étendu sur le chemin, l'âne et le lion à côté de lui. 25 Des voyageurs virent le cadavre étendu sur le chemin, avec le lion à côté de lui, et ils en parlèrent à leur arrivée dans la ville où habitait le vieux prophète. 26 Lorsque le prophète qui avait fait revenir en arrière l'homme de Dieu en entendit parler, il se dit: «C'est l'homme de Dieu qui s'est révolté contre l'ordre de l'Eternel! L'Eternel l'a livré au lion, qui l'a mis en pièces et l'a fait mourir, conformément à la parole qu'il lui avait dite.» 27 Puis, s'adressant à ses fils, il demanda: «Sellez-moi l'âne.» C'est ce qu'ils firent, 28 et il partit. Il trouva le cadavre étendu sur le chemin, et l'âne et le lion à côté de lui. Le lion n'avait pas dévoré le cadavre ni mis l'âne en pièces. 29 Le vieux prophète souleva le cadavre de l'homme de Dieu, le déposa sur son âne et le ramena, il retourna dans sa ville pour le pleurer et l'enterrer. 30 Il déposa son cadavre dans son propre tombeau et l'on pleura sur lui en disant: «Quel malheur, mon frère!» 31 Après l'avoir enterré, le vieux prophète dit à ses fils: «Quand je serai mort, vous m'enterrerez dans le tombeau où est enterré l'homme de Dieu, vous déposerez mes ossements à côté des siens. 32 En effet, elle s'accomplira, la parole qu'il a criée, sur l'ordre de l'Eternel, contre l'autel de Béthel et contre tous les centres de hauts lieux présents dans les villes de Samarie.» 33 Même après cet événement, Jéroboam ne se détourna pas de sa mauvaise voie. Il continua à instituer des prêtres de hauts lieux pris parmi l'ensemble du peuple. Celui qui en émettait le désir, il l'établissait dans la fonction de prêtre des hauts lieux. 34 Cela fut une cause de péché pour la famille de Jéroboam, et c'est pour cela qu'elle a été exterminée et détruite de la surface de la terre.
