1And Joshua the son of Nun sent[1] two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. (Nu 25:1; Mt 1:5; Heb 11:31; Jas 2:25)2And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”3Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.5And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”6But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof.7So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. (Jud 3:28; Jud 7:24)8Before the men[2] lay down, she came up to them on the roof9and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. (Ex 15:15; Ex 15:16; Ex 23:27; Jos 2:11; Jos 2:24)10For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.[3] (Ex 14:21; Nu 21:23; Nu 21:33; Jos 4:23; Ps 135:11; Ps 136:19)11And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. (Ex 15:14; De 4:39; Jos 2:9; Jos 5:1; Jos 7:5; 2Sa 17:10; Ps 22:14; Isa 13:7; Eze 21:7)12Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign (Jos 2:18)13that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”14And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” (Jud 1:24)15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. (1Sa 19:12; Ac 9:25; 2Co 11:33)16And she said[4] to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.”17The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear.18Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. (Jos 2:12; Jos 6:23)19Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. (Mt 27:25)20But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” (Jos 2:14)21And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.22They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing.23Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. (Jos 2:7)24And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.” (Ex 23:31; Jos 2:9; Jos 21:44)
1يوشع، دو جاسوس از شطيم به آن طرف رود اردن فرستاد تا وضعيت آن سرزمين و بخصوص شهر اريحا را بررسی كنند. وقتی آنها به آن شهر رسيدند، به خانهٔ فاحشهای به نام راحاب رفتند تا شب را در آنجا بگذرانند.2همان شب به پادشاه اريحا خبر رسيد كه چند جاسوس اسرائيلی وارد شهر شدهاند.3پادشاه افرادی را با اين پيغام نزد راحاب فرستاد: «مردانی را كه به خانهٔ تو آمدهاند به ما تحويل بده، زيرا آنها جاسوس هستند.»4اما راحاب كه آن دو مرد را پنهان كرده بود، گفت: «آنها پيش من آمدند، ولی نفهميدم چه كسانی بودند.5هنگامی كه هوا تاريک شد، پيش از بسته شدن دروازهها از شهر خارج شدند و من نمیدانم كجا رفتند. اگر به دنبال آنها بشتابيد میتوانيد به ايشان برسيد.»6ولی راحاب قبلاً آن دو مرد را به پشت بام برده، ايشان را زير تودهای از ساقههای كتان كه در آنجا گذاشته بود، مخفی كرده بود.7پس مأمورانِ پادشاهِ اريحا در جستجوی آن دو نفر تا كرانهٔ رود اردن پيش رفتند. به مجرد اينكه آنها از شهر خارج شدند، دروازههای شهر را از پشت سر ايشان بستند.8شب، پيش از آنكه آن دو مرد بخوابند، راحاب نزد ايشان به پشت بام رفت9و به آنها گفت: «من شک ندارم كه خداوند، سرزمين ما را به شما خواهد داد. همهٔ ما از شما اسرائيلیها میترسيم. هر کس نام اسرائيل را میشنود از ترس میلرزد.10چون شنيدهايم كه چگونه موقع خروج از مصر، خداوند از ميان دريای سرخ راه خشكی برای شما پديد آورد تا از آن بگذريد! خبر داريم كه به سيحون و عوج، پادشاهان اموریها كه در طرف شرق اردن بودند، چه كرديد و چگونه آنها و مردمانشان را نابود ساختيد.11وقتی اين خبرها را شنيديم، ترس وجود ما را فرا گرفت و جرأت خود را از دست داديم؛ زيرا خدای شما، خدای آسمان و زمين است و مانند او خدايی نيست.12-13حال از شما میخواهم كه به نام خدايتان برای من قسم بخوريد و نشانهای به من بدهيد كه وقتی شهر اريحا را تصرف نموديد، در ازای كمكی كه به شما كردم، مرا همراه پدر و مادر و خواهران و برادرانم و خانوادههای آنها حفظ كنيد تا كشته نشويم.»14آن دو مرد جواب دادند: «اگر در مورد ما با كسی سخن نگويی، به جان خود قسم میخوريم كه وقتی خداوند اين سرزمين را به ما داد، ترتيبی بدهيم كه به تو و بستگانت آسيبی نرسد.»15خانهٔ راحاب بر حصار شهر قرار داشت، پس او آن دو مرد را با طناب از پنجرهٔ اتاقش پايين فرستاد.16سپس به ايشان گفت: «به كوه فرار كنيد و سه روز در آنجا پنهان شويد تا مأمورانی كه به جستجوی شما رفتهاند بازگردند. آنگاه میتوانيد به راه خود ادامه دهيد.»17-18آن دو نفر پيش از رفتن به او گفتند: «وقتی ما به اين شهر حمله كرديم، تو پدر و مادر و برادران و خواهران و خانوادههای آنها را در خانهٔ خود جمع كن و اين طناب قرمز را به همين پنجره ببند. اگر اين كار را نكنی و آسيبی به شما برسد، ما در برابر قسمی كه خوردهايم مسئول نخواهيم بود.19اگر كسی از خانه بيرون برود، خونش به گردن خودش است و ما مسئول مرگش نخواهيم بود. ما قسم میخوريم كسانی كه در اين خانه بمانند كشته نشوند و به ايشان كوچكترين آسيبی نرسد.20اما اگر تو دربارهٔ ما با كسی سخن بگويی، اين قسم باطل میشود.»21راحاب گفت: «آنچه را كه گفتيد میپذيرم.» سپس ايشان را روانه كرد و طناب قرمز را به پنجره بست.22آن دو به كوه رفتند و سه روز در آنجا ماندند. تعقيبكنندگان همهٔ راهها را جستجو كردند و چون ايشان را نيافتند، ناچار به شهر بازگشتند.23آنگاه آن دو نفر از كوه به زير آمده، از رود اردن عبور نمودند و نزد يوشع بازگشتند و آنچه برايشان اتفاق افتاده بود به او گزارش دادند.24آنها به يوشع گفتند: «اطمينان داريم كه خداوند تمام آن سرزمين را به ما بخشيده است، زيرا مردم آنجا از ترس ما روحيهٔ خود را باختهاند!»
