The Lord Promises Peace

1 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard: (Jer 32:2) 2 “Thus says the Lord who made the earth,^[1] the Lord who formed it to establish it—the Lord is his name: (Ex 6:3; Ps 83:18; Isa 37:26; Jer 16:21; Am 4:13)

3 Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. (Ps 91:15; Isa 48:6; Jer 29:12) 4 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword: (Jer 32:24) 5 They are coming in to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them^[2] with the dead bodies of men whom I shall strike down in my anger and my wrath, for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil. (De 31:17; Jer 32:5; Eze 22:20) 6 Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security. (Jer 30:17) 7 I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and rebuild them as they were at first. (Isa 1:26; Jer 24:6; Jer 30:3) 8 I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me. 9 And this city^[3] shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them. They shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it. (Ps 130:4; Isa 60:5; Jer 13:11) 10 “Thus says the Lord: In this place of which you say, ‘It is a waste without man or beast,’ in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man or inhabitant or beast, there shall be heard again (Jer 32:43) 11 the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing, as they bring thank offerings to the house of the Lord: “‘Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!’ For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the Lord. 12 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: In this place that is waste, without man or beast, and in all of its cities, there shall again be habitations of shepherds resting their flocks. (So 1:7; Isa 65:10; Jer 31:24; Jer 50:19; Eze 34:14; Eze 36:11)

13 In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, flocks shall again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the Lord. (Le 27:32; Jer 17:26; Joh 10:3)

The Lord’s Eternal Covenant with David

14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. (Jer 23:5; Jer 29:10) 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. (Isa 4:2; Isa 11:1; Jer 23:5) 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ (Jer 23:6; Jer 32:37) 17 “For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, (2Sa 7:16; 1Ki 2:4; Ps 89:3) 18 and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.” (Isa 66:21) 19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20 “Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, (Ge 8:22; Ps 72:5; Isa 54:9; Jer 31:36; Jer 33:25)

21 then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. (Ps 89:34) 22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.” (Ge 22:17) 23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight. 25 Thus says the Lord: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth, (Ps 74:16; Ps 104:19) 26 then I will reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.” (Jer 30:3; Jer 33:7; Jer 33:11)

1 Als Jeremia im Wachthof eingeschlossen war, kam das Wort Jahwes noch ein zweites Mal zu ihm. 2 So spricht Jahwe, der alles geschaffen, Jahwe, der alles geformt und eingerichtet hat, Jahwe ist sein Name: 3 „Rufe mich an, dann antworte ich dir und teile dir große, unfassbare Dinge mit, von denen du nichts weißt.“ 4 Denn so spricht Jahwe, der Gott Israels, über die Häuser dieser Stadt und die Paläste der Könige von Juda, die abgebrochen werden, um sie gegen die Sturmwälle und für andere Kriegszwecke zu verwenden: 5 „Man kommt nur, um gegen die Chaldäer zu kämpfen und die Häuser mit den Leichen der Menschen zu füllen, die ich in meiner Zornglut erschlug, weil ich mich wegen der Bosheit dieser Stadt von ihr abgewandt habe: 6 Seht, ich lasse eine Haut über ihre Wunde wachsen und bringe ihr Heilung. Ich stelle sie wieder her und bringe ihr echten, dauerhaften Frieden. 7 Ich wende das Schicksal Judas und Israels und baue sie auf wie am Anfang. 8 Ich reinige sie von all ihren Sünden, die sie gegen mich begingen, und vergebe ihnen die bösen Taten ihrer Auflehnung gegen mich. 9 Dann werde ich mich über Jerusalem freuen, denn diese Stadt wird mir bei allen Völkern der Welt Ruhm und Ehre einbringen. Sie werden von Ehrfurcht überwältigt sein, wenn sie hören, wie viel Gutes und welchen Frieden ich dieser Stadt schenke.“ 10 So spricht Jahwe: „An diesen Ort, von dem ihr sagt: Er ist verwüstet, ohne Menschen und Vieh, ‹sage ich›: In die Städte Judas und die Straßen Jerusalems, die menschenleer sind, in denen man kein Tier mehr findet, 11 dorthin kehren Jubel und Freude zurück. Man wird den Ruf von Bräutigam und Braut wieder hören und das Lob von denen, die ins Haus Jahwes einziehen und sagen: 'Preist Jahwe, den Allmächtigen, denn Jahwe ist gütig und seine Gnade besteht ewig!' Denn ich werde das Schicksal des Landes wenden, und es wird sein wie am Anfang“, spricht Jahwe. 12 So spricht Jahwe, der Allmächtige: „An diesem Ort, der verwüstet ist, wo es keinen Menschen und kein Tier mehr gibt, und in allen umliegenden Städten wird es wieder Weideland geben, auf dem die Hirten mit ihren Herden lagern. 13 Auch die Städte im Bergland und in der Schefela, im Land Benjamin, in der Umgebung von Jerusalem und in ganz Juda sehen wieder Herden vorüberziehen, die von den Hirten gezählt werden“, spricht Jahwe. 14 „Es kommt eine Zeit“, spricht Jahwe, „da lasse ich das gute Wort in Erfüllung gehen, das ich über Israel und Juda geredet habe. 15 In diesen Tagen, zu dieser Zeit werde ich aus der Nachkommenschaft Davids einen gerechten Mann hervorkommen lassen. Er wird im Land für Recht und Gerechtigkeit sorgen. 16 Dann ist Juda und Jerusalem frei und sicher. Jerusalem wird dann den Namen tragen: 'Jahwe, unsere Gerechtigkeit'.“ 17 Denn so spricht Jahwe: „Nie soll es dem Haus Davids an einem Mann fehlen, der auf dem Thron Israels sitzt. 18 Auch den Priestern aus dem Stamm Levi soll es nie an einem Mann fehlen, der mir Brandopfer bringt, der das Speisopfer in Rauch aufgehen lässt und das Freudenopfer schlachtet.“ 19 Das Wort Jahwes kam zu Jeremia. 20 So spricht Jahwe: „Wenn ihr meinen Bund mit Tag und Nacht brechen könnt, sodass Tag und Nacht nicht mehr zu ihrer Zeit eintreten werden, 21 dann könnte auch mein Bund mit meinem Diener David gebrochen werden, dass er keinen Nachkommen mehr hätte, der als König regiert. Ebenso ist es mit meinen Dienern, den levitischen Priestern. 22 So, wie man die Sterne am Himmel nicht zählen und den Sand am Meer nicht messen kann, so werde ich die Nachkommen meines Dieners David und die Leviten zahlreich machen, die mir dienen.“ 23 Das Wort Jahwes kam zu Jeremia: 24 „Hast du gehört, was die Leute sagen? 'Jahwe hat die beiden Stammesverbände verstoßen, die er doch selbst erwählt hatte.' So verachten sie mein Volk, als hätte es aufgehört, ein Volk zu sein.“ 25 So spricht Jahwe: „Wenn ich meinen Bund mit Tag und Nacht und die Gesetze von Himmel und Erde nicht mehr bestehen ließe, 26 dann würde ich auch die Nachkommen Jakobs und die meines Dieners David verwerfen, sodass niemand mehr aus Davids Familie über die Nachkommen von Abraham, Isaak und Jakob herrscht. Denn ich werde Erbarmen mit ihnen haben und ihr Schicksal wenden.“
