The Lord’s Love for Israel
2“I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob (De 7:8; Jer 31:3; Am 1:11; Ob 1:10; Mal 2:14; Mal 2:17; Mal 3:7; Mal 3:13; Ro 9:13)3but Esau I have hated. I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” (Isa 34:13; Jer 49:10; Jer 49:18; Eze 35:3; Joe 3:19)4If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’”5Your own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!” (Ps 91:8)
The Priests’ Polluted Offerings
6“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ (Ex 4:22; Ex 20:12; Ho 11:1; Mal 1:2; Lu 6:46)7By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the Lord’s table may be despised. (Mal 1:2; Mal 1:8; Mal 1:12; Mal 2:12; Mal 3:3)8When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the Lord of hosts. (Le 22:22; Mal 1:13)9And now entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, will he show favor to any of you? says the Lord of hosts. I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand. Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord. (Le 22:20; Isa 43:23; Mic 6:3; Mal 1:8; Mal 3:14)14Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. 2«Yo los he amado», dice el Señor. « “¿Y cómo nos has amado?”, replican ustedes. »¿No era Esaú hermano de Jacob? Sin embargo, amé a Jacob3pero aborrecí a Esaú, y convertí sus montañas en desolación y entregué su heredad a los chacales del desierto.»4Edom dice: «Aunque nos han hecho pedazos, reconstruiremos sobre las ruinas.» Pero el Señor Todopoderoso dice: «Ustedes podrán reconstruir, pero yo derribaré. Serán llamados territorio malvado, pueblo contra el cual siempre estará indignado el Señor.5Ustedes lo verán con sus propios ojos y dirán: “¡Se ha engrandecido el Señor aun más allá de las fronteras[2] de Israel!”
El culto al Señor
6»El hijo honra a su padre y el siervo a su señor. Ahora bien, si soy padre, ¿dónde está el honor que merezco? Y si soy señor, ¿dónde está el respeto que se me debe? Yo, el Señor Todopoderoso, les pregunto a ustedes, sacerdotes que desprecian mi nombre. »Y encima preguntan: “¿En qué hemos despreciado tu nombre?”7»Pues en que ustedes traen a mi altar alimento mancillado. »Y todavía preguntan: “¿En qué te hemos mancillado?” »Pues en que tienen la mesa del Señor como algo despreciable.8Ustedes traen animales ciegos para el sacrificio, y piensan que no tiene nada de malo; sacrifican animales cojos o enfermos, y piensan que no tiene nada de malo. ¿Por qué no tratan de ofrecérselos a su gobernante? ¿Creen que estaría él contento con ustedes? ¿Se ganarían su favor? —dice el Señor Todopoderoso—.9»Ahora pues, traten de apaciguar a Dios para que se apiade de nosotros. ¿Creen que con esta clase de ofrendas se van a ganar su favor? —dice el Señor Todopoderoso—.10¡Cómo quisiera que alguno de ustedes clausurara el templo, para que no encendieran en vano el fuego de mi altar! No estoy nada contento con ustedes —dice el Señor Todopoderoso—, y no voy a aceptar ni una sola ofrenda de sus manos.11Porque desde donde nace el sol hasta donde se pone, grande es mi nombre entre las naciones. En todo lugar se ofrece incienso y ofrendas puras a mi nombre, porque grande es mi nombre entre las naciones —dice el Señor Todopoderoso—.12Pero ustedes lo profanan cuando dicen que la mesa del Señor está mancillada y que su alimento es despreciable.13Y exclaman: “¡Qué hastío!” Y me tratan con desdén —dice el Señor Todopoderoso—. ¿Y creen que voy a aceptar de sus manos los animales lesionados, cojos o enfermos que ustedes me traen como sacrificio? —dice el Señor—.14»¡Maldito sea el tramposo que, teniendo un macho aceptable en su rebaño, se lo dedica al Señor y luego le ofrece un animal mutilado! Porque yo soy el gran rey —dice el Señor Todopoderoso—, y temido es mi nombre entre las naciones.
