Jeremiah 43

Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

1 When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, 

2 Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ (Ps 86:14; Isa 13:11; Jer 40:8; Jer 42:1; Jer 42:19; Mal 4:1) 

3 but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” (Jer 32:12; Jer 37:13; Jer 38:22) 

4 So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. (Jer 40:13; Jer 43:2) 

5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— (Jer 40:11) 

6 the men, the women, the children, the princesses, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan; also Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. (Jer 38:23; Jer 39:10; Jer 39:14; Jer 40:7; Jer 44:20) 

7 And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at Tahpanhes. (Isa 30:4; Jer 2:16; Jer 44:1; Jer 46:14) 

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes: (Jer 43:7) 

9 “Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, (Jer 43:7) 

10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. (Jer 1:15; Jer 25:9) 

11 He shall come and strike the land of Egypt, giving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. (Jer 15:2; Jer 44:13; Jer 46:13) 

12 I shall kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them and carry them away captive. And he shall clean the land of Egypt as a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. (Ex 12:12; Ps 104:2; Isa 19:1; Isa 49:18; Jer 17:27; Jer 46:25; Jer 48:7; Eze 30:13) 

13 He shall break the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’” (Ex 23:24; Jer 43:12)

1 Cuando Jeremías terminó de comunicarle al pueblo todo lo que el Señor su Dios le había encomendado decirles, 

2 Azarías hijo de Osaías, Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los arrogantes le respondieron a Jeremías: «¡Lo que dices es una mentira! El Señor nuestro Dios no te mandó a decirnos que no vayamos a vivir a Egipto. 

3 Es Baruc hijo de Nerías el que te incita contra nosotros, para entregarnos en poder de los babilonios, para que nos maten o nos lleven cautivos a Babilonia.» 

4 Así que ni Johanán hijo de Carea, ni los jefes militares, ni nadie del pueblo, obedecieron el mandato del Señor, de quedarse a vivir en el país de Judá. 

5 Por el contrario, Johanán hijo de Carea y todos los jefes militares se llevaron a la gente que aún quedaba en Judá, es decir, a los que habían vuelto para vivir en Judá luego de haber sido dispersados por todas las naciones: 

6 los hombres, las mujeres y los niños, las hijas del rey, y toda la gente que Nabuzaradán, comandante de la guardia, había confiado a Guedalías hijo de Ajicán, nieto de Safán, y también a Jeremías el profeta y a Baruc hijo de Nerías; 

7 y contrariando el mandato del Señor se dirigieron al país de Egipto, llegando hasta la ciudad de Tafnes. 

8 En Tafnes, la palabra del Señor vino a Jeremías: 

9 «Toma en tus manos unas piedras grandes y, a la vista de los judíos, entiérralas con argamasa en el pavimento, frente a la entrada del palacio del faraón en Tafnes. 

10 Luego comunícales que así dice el Señor Todopoderoso, el Dios de Israel: “Voy a mandar a buscar a mi siervo Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia; voy a colocar su trono sobre estas piedras que he enterrado, y él armará sobre ellas su toldo real. 

11 Vendrá al país de Egipto y lo atacará: el que esté destinado a la muerte, morirá; el que esté destinado al exilio, será exiliado; el que esté destinado a la guerra, a la guerra irá. 

12 Prenderá fuego a los templos de los dioses de Egipto; los quemará y los llevará cautivos. Sacudirá a Egipto, como un pastor que se sacude los piojos de la ropa, y luego se irá de allí sin inmutarse. 

13 Destruirá los obeliscos de Bet Semes, y prenderá fuego a los templos de los dioses de Egipto.” »
