1Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. (Ge 12:6; De 11:30; Jud 6:32; 1Sa 29:1)2The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ (De 8:17; Isa 10:13)3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. (De 20:8)4And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.”5So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.”6And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water.7And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” (1Sa 14:6; 2Ch 14:11)8So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. (Jud 7:1)9That same night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. (Ge 46:2; Jud 3:28; 1Ki 3:5)10But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant.11And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. (Jud 7:13; 1Sa 14:9)12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. (Jos 11:4; Jud 6:3)13When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”14And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.”15As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has given the host of Midian into your hand.”16And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. (Ge 15:17; Jud 15:4)17And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do.18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’” (Ex 14:13; 2Ch 20:17)
Gideon Defeats Midian
19So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands.20Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” (Jud 7:18)21Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. (2Ki 7:7)22When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[1] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. (Jos 6:4; Jos 6:16; Jos 6:20; 1Sa 14:20; 2Ch 20:23; Ps 83:9; Isa 9:4)23And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. (Jos 24:33; Jud 3:28; Jud 6:35)25And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan. (Jud 8:3; Jud 8:4; Ps 83:11; Isa 10:26)

Coboară‑i la ape și ți‑i voi alege acolo. Acela despre care îți voi spune să meargă cu tine, va merge cu tine și toți aceia despre care îți voi spune să nu meargă cu tine, nu vor merge cu tine.“5Ghedeon a coborât poporul la apă și DOMNUL i‑a zis: „Pe cei care vor lipăi apa cu limba[1] așa cum lipăie câinele, să‑i separi de toți aceia care se vor pleca pe genunchi să bea apă!“6Numărul celor care au lipăit apa cu limba a fost de trei sute de bărbați. Restul poporului s‑a plecat pe genunchi să bea apă.7DOMNUL i‑a zis lui Ghedeon: „Cu cei trei sute de bărbați care au lipăit din apă cum lipăie câinele, vă voi izbăvi și‑i voi da pe midianiți în mâna ta. Toți ceilalți din popor să plece fiecare la locul lui.“8După ce poporul și‑a luat proviziile și trâmbițele[2] în mâini, Ghedeon i‑a trimis pe toți bărbații lui Israel acasă, pe fiecare la corturile lui, și i‑a ținut doar pe cei trei sute de bărbați. Tabăra lui Midian era în vale, mai jos de tabăra lui Ghedeon. (Jud 3:27)9Chiar în noaptea aceea, DOMNUL i‑a zis lui Ghedeon: „Ridică‑te! Coboară în tabără, căci am dat‑o în mâinile tale.10Dacă ți‑e teamă să te cobori, coboară‑te cu Pura, slujitorul tău.11Vei auzi ce vorbesc ei, apoi ți se vor întări mâinile și vei coborî în tabără.“ Atunci el și cu Pura, slujitorul lui, au înaintat până la avanpostul străjerilor care erau în tabără.12Midianiții, amalekiții și fiii Răsăritului erau răspândiți în vale, ca o mulțime de lăcuste. Cămilele lor erau fără număr, ca nisipul de pe țărmul mării.13Ghedeon a sosit, și iată că un om îi povestea semenului său un vis. El zicea: – Am avut un vis: se făcea că o turtă de orz se rostogolea în tabăra midianiților. A ajuns până la cort, l‑a izbit și acesta a căzut răsturnându‑se cu susul în jos. Și astfel, cortul a fost distrus.14Semenul lui a răspuns și a zis: – Aceasta nu este altceva decât sabia lui Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioaș, un bărbat al lui Israel. Dumnezeu i‑a dat în mâna lui pe Midian și toată tabăra.15După ce a auzit Ghedeon povestirea visului și interpretarea lui, s‑a închinat și s‑a întors în tabăra lui Israel. El le‑a zis: „Ridicați‑vă, căci DOMNUL a dat în mâinile voastre tabăra lui Midian.“16A împărțit cei trei sute de bărbați în trei cete, a dat fiecăruia câte o trâmbiță și niște urcioare goale cu torțe în ele,17și le‑a zis: „Să vă uitați la mine și să faceți la fel! Când o să ajung la capătul taberei, să faceți așa cum voi face eu!18Când eu și cei care vor fi cu mine vom suna din trâmbițe, atunci să sunați și voi din trâmbițele voastre de jur împrejurul întregii tabere și să ziceți: «Pentru DOMNUL și pentru Ghedeon!»“19Ghedeon și cei o sută de bărbați care erau cu el au ajuns la capătul taberei la începutul străjii de la miezul nopții[3], chiar când se schimbau străjerii. Atunci au sunat din trâmbițe și au spart urcioarele pe care le aveau în mâini.20Cele trei cete au sunat din trâmbițe și au spart urcioarele. Au apucat torțele cu mâna stângă, în timp ce în mâna dreaptă țineau trâmbițele ca să sune. Apoi au strigat: „Sabia DOMNULUI și sabia lui Ghedeon!“21Fiecare rămăsese la locul lui în jurul taberei. Și toată tabăra a alergat, a strigat și a fugit.22Când ei au sunat din cele trei sute de trâmbițe, DOMNUL a făcut ca oamenii care erau în tabără să întoarcă sabia unii împotriva altora. Tabăra a fugit către Bet‑Șita, înspre Țerera, lângă hotarul de la Abel-Mehola, în apropiere de Tabat.23Bărbații lui Israel din Neftali, din Așer și din întregul Manase au fost chemați să‑i urmărească pe midianiți.24Ghedeon a trimis mesageri prin tot muntele lui Efraim, zicând: „Coborâți, urmăriți‑i pe midianiți și capturați‑i la apele de lângă Bet‑Bara și la Iordan.“ Și toți bărbații lui Efraim s‑au strâns și au pus stăpânire pe apele de lângă Bet‑Bara și pe Iordan.25Le‑au prins pe cele două căpetenii ale midianiților, pe Oreb și pe Zeeb. Pe Oreb l‑au ucis la Țur‑Oreb[4], iar pe Zeeb l‑au ucis la Iecheb-Zeeb.[5] După ce i‑au urmărit pe midianiți, i‑au adus lui Ghedeon, dincolo de Iordan, capetele lui Oreb și Zeeb.
