1And Joshua the son of Nun sent[1] two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. (Nu 25:1; Mt 1:5; Heb 11:31; Jas 2:25)2And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”3Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”4But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from.5And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”6But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof.7So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. (Jud 3:28; Jud 7:24)8Before the men[2] lay down, she came up to them on the roof9and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. (Ex 15:15; Ex 15:16; Ex 23:27; Jos 2:11; Jos 2:24)10For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.[3] (Ex 14:21; Nu 21:23; Nu 21:33; Jos 4:23; Ps 135:11; Ps 136:19)11And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. (Ex 15:14; De 4:39; Jos 2:9; Jos 5:1; Jos 7:5; 2Sa 17:10; Ps 22:14; Isa 13:7; Eze 21:7)12Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign (Jos 2:18)13that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”14And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” (Jud 1:24)15Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. (1Sa 19:12; Ac 9:25; 2Co 11:33)16And she said[4] to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.”17The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear.18Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. (Jos 2:12; Jos 6:23)19Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. (Mt 27:25)20But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” (Jos 2:14)21And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.22They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing.23Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. (Jos 2:7)24And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.” (Ex 23:31; Jos 2:9; Jos 21:44)
Trimiterea cercetașilor la Ierihon, în casa lui Rahab
1După aceea, Iosua, fiul lui Nun, a trimis în secret, din Șitim, doi cercetași, zicând: „Duceți‑vă să cercetați țara și mai ales Ierihonul!“ Ei au plecat și au intrat în casa unei prostituate numită Rahab, culcându‑se acolo.2Regelui Ierihonului i s‑a zis: „Iată că niște bărbați dintre fiii lui Israel au venit aici, în timpul nopții, ca să cerceteze țara.“3Atunci regele Ierihonului a trimis să i se spună prostituatei Rahab: – Scoate‑i afară pe bărbații care au venit la tine și au intrat în casa ta, fiindcă au venit să cerceteze întreaga țară!4Femeia însă îi luase pe cei doi bărbați și‑i ascunsese. Ea a răspuns: – Este adevărat că acei bărbați au venit la mine, dar nu știam de unde sunt.5Când s‑a făcut noapte și poarta urma să fie închisă, bărbații au ieșit și nu știu unde s‑au dus. Urmăriți‑i repede și îi veți ajunge!6Ea îi urcase pe acoperiș și îi ascunsese printre snopii de in pe care‑i avea întinși pe acoperiș.7Ei i‑au urmărit pe drumul care duce la vadurile Iordanului. După ce au ieșit urmăritorii, poarta s‑a închis în urma lor.8Înainte să se culce cercetașii, Rahab s‑a urcat la ei pe acoperiș.9Ea le‑a zis bărbaților: – Știu că DOMNUL v‑a dat țara aceasta. Din cauza voastră a căzut groaza peste noi, iar locuitorii țării sunt topiți de frică.10Am auzit cum, la ieșirea voastră din Egipt, DOMNUL a secat înaintea voastră apele Mării Roșii[1] și am aflat ce le‑ați făcut lui Sihon și lui Og, cei doi regi amoriți de la răsărit de Iordan, pe care i‑ați dat spre nimicire[2]. (1Ki 9:26; Jon 2:5)11Când am auzit lucrurile acestea, ni s‑au înmuiat inimile și fiecare om și‑a pierdut curajul din cauza voastră, fiindcă DOMNUL, Dumnezeul vostru, este Dumnezeu sus în ceruri și jos pe pământ!12Acum deci, vă rog, jurați‑mi pe DOMNUL că veți arăta față de familia tatălui meu, aceeași bunătate pe care și eu am avut‑o față de voi. Dați‑mi un semn demn de încredere13că‑i veți lăsa în viață pe tatăl meu, mama mea, frații mei și surorile mele împreună cu tot ce au și că ne veți scăpa sufletele de la moarte.14Bărbații i‑au răspuns: – Suntem gata să ne dăm viața pentru voi, dacă nu ne vei trăda. Iar atunci când DOMNUL ne va da țara, ne vom purta cu tine cu îndurare și credincioșie.15Ea i‑a coborât atunci prin fereastră cu o frânghie, căci casa ei era parte din zid, ea locuind chiar în zid.16Apoi le‑a zis: – Mergeți spre munte, ca să nu vă întâlniți cu cei care vă urmăresc, și ascundeți‑vă acolo timp de trei zile, până se vor întoarce. După aceea veți putea să vă continuați drumul.17Bărbații i‑au spus: – Noi vom fi dezlegați de jurământul acesta, pe care ne‑ai pus să‑l facem,18dacă atunci când vom intra în țară nu vei lega această frânghie din fir cărămiziu de fereastra prin care ne‑ai coborât și dacă nu vei aduce în casa ta pe tatăl tău, pe mama ta și pe frații tăi, toată familia ta.19Dacă cineva va ieși afară, dincolo de porțile casei tale, sângele lui va cădea asupra capului său, iar noi vom fi nevinovați. Dar dacă va pune cineva mâna pe vreunul din cei ce vor fi în casă cu tine, sângele lui va cădea asupra capului nostru.20Dacă ne vei trăda, atunci vom fi dezlegați de jurământul acesta, pe care ne‑ai pus să‑l facem.21Ea le‑a răspuns: – Să fie precum ați spus! Apoi i‑a trimis, și ei au plecat, iar ea a legat frânghia cărămizie de fereastră.22Ei s‑au dus și au ajuns la munte, unde au rămas trei zile, până când s‑au întors cei care îi urmăreau și care îi căutaseră de‑a lungul întregului drum fără să‑i găsească.23Apoi cei doi bărbați s‑au întors, au coborât muntele și au traversat Iordanul. Au venit la Iosua, fiul lui Nun, și i‑au istorisit tot ce li s‑a întâmplat.24Ei i‑au spus lui Iosua: „Într-adevăr, DOMNUL a dat în mâinile noastre întreaga țară și toți locuitorii țării tremură înaintea noastră!“
